Congressman Tom Lantos of California has died. Lantos was the only Holocaust survivor ever to serve in Congress. His spokeswoman says he died early Monday morning.
Lynne Weill said that Lantos, 80, passed away at the Bethesda Naval Medical Center in suburban Maryland.
Lantos was surrounded by his wife, Anette, two daughters and many of his 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren when he died.
The flag flying over the U.S. Capitol was lowered to half-staff Monday in honor of Lantos.
Lantos, D-Calif., announced last month that he had been diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus. [read more]
