I have snow on the brain as I watch other parts of the country, and world, being covered in blankets of beautiful white just in time for Christmas. We still don’t have any here, and so far the weather report suggests we won’t get any until two days after Christmas.
So some carols and songs that have more to do with snow than Christmas are buzzing around my brain. The first is Snow from the movie musical White Christmas, starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen. The second is also titled Snow, but a very different song by the French songstress Claudine Longet.
What about you? Are you going to have a white Christmas?

Satellites can see urban heat. This was demonstrated in a recent paper at the 2010 AGU meeting by NASA. See : Satellites Image the Urban Heat Islands in the Northeast.
The satellite temperature data from the University of Alabama, Huntsville (UAH) supports the idea of Urban Heat (UHI) as a significant factor when estimating global temperatures. Do follow the link to see the satellite images of the compact city of Providence,RI, shown in natural color, infrared, vegetation and developed land. The guest post from Frank Lansner shows that the UAH temperature trends seem to match the satellite data from the oceans.
A little sampling of real science as opposed to the other stuff.

This video has been running in Britain, and has even run on the BBC. It suggests that climate skepticism is gaining ground even there.

Great Britain now (2010):
Swathes of Britain skidded to a halt today as the big freeze returned – grounding flights, closing rail links and leaving traffic at a standstill.
And tonight the nation was braced for another 10in of snow and yet more sub-zero temperatures – with no let-up in the bitterly cold weather for at least a month, forecasters have warned.
The Arctic conditions are set to last through the Christmas and New Year bank holidays and beyond and as temperatures plummeted to -10c (14f) the Met Office said this December was ‘almost certain’ to become the coldest since records began in 1910. [read more]
Great Britain then (2000):
Snowfalls are now just a thing of the past
Britain’s winter ends tomorrow with further indications of a striking environmental change: snow is starting to disappear from our lives.
…”Children just aren’t going to know what snow is,” he said. [read more]
The only thing anthropogenic global warming advocates have proved is Maragaret Thatcher’s famous quote, “The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.” As we are now seeing, socialism has bankrupted much of Europe, and I submit the only reason those nations have been so enthusiastically pushing the United States to sign onto a global warming treaty is because every such agreement to date would have redistributed billions in American wealth to prop up those nations’ failing socialist programs.

Nobody beats the original by Julie Andrews from the Sound of Music, but one of my favorite things is Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass’ Christmas Album. We grew up with it, and last year I found this rare footage on YouTube. The whole album is a classic; one that everyone should have.
