Congress deliberately gave away their power to regulate, because? it's a lot of work? boring? hard to do right? Who knows. My guess is that if they did the regulation— they would be responsible for it and have to answer to furious voters. and that they wanted to avoid. With the current setup, you can email, write a letter, or phone, or try to catch them in their district office (make an appointment). Most people just shrug and vow to vote for someone else next time, and when the time comes, the choices are worse. That is a problem. They ARE out-of-touch, don't understand how angry we get. And a large percentage of people just don't pay any attention at all until it's time to vote.

I don't think I ever knew that he was once a candidate. I think maybe Herman Cain has the right idea— which he directed at the EPA (my favorite target). Dump the agency, dump all their rules, and start over. But there certainly should not be more people working for the USDA than there are farmers. Dump the agency, dump their rules, and start over. Think that will sell?

Er.... "Word of Me"... might want to check out actual military trends-- they're kicking folks out on the smallest of excuses. A friend of mine was only able to keep his job by changing rates, and was only able to do that because the rate he'd chosen was far below his inherent abilities. There's no lack of folks available for "military fodder," no matter what the BMI pushers keep saying in the news.

Really wish we could charge folks for abuse of power....

Or even just make sure laws had to be passed by Congress, instead of "regulations" from bureaucrats.....

Vilsack is a puffed up former failed presidential candidate. One of the several Obama appointments that shouts "No change!" It is one thing for an independent nutritionist to say the kinds of things that you have quoted him saying, quite another for a USDA Secretary to say.

Instead of trying to get restaurants to change their menus, Vilsack should be concentrating his (meagre) brain power on figuring out on how to drastically down-size the USDA.

We have to get used to the fact that we are just mortgage-able income units. As long as we are healthy and living a reasonably healthy life our government can use the insurance tables and figure how long we can be productive, and contribute taxes, and serve as collateral for loans from China and the like. We have a dollar value to the government.

If we screw around with drugs and unhealthy foods we up our long term maintenance costs and lower our utilization percentages. That's why the politicians are trying to get rid of Social Security...the longer we live the more money has to be paid out to the healthy senior citizens.

Also with the problem of child obesity we Americans are reducing the available pool of candidates for military fodder service...gotta keep the bodies coming....:-)
