And you know, Larry D. that the most annoying part of that whole thing is not the businesses that are suffering (a very nice lady who runs a B&B in Buxton, about a half-mile from the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, says she may need to close during a part of the year when she used to stay full because of all the restrictions to beach access). It's that most of the people who have gone to all of these lengths to close off significant portions of Cape Hatteras and Pea Island HAVE NEVER BEEN TO THE OUTER BANKS! Some small groups who were "concerned" about piping plover and sea turtle nesting areas prevailed on larger groups, and were able to bully the Dare County government to ask the park service to close off access (Hyde and Carteret counties received similar pressure, but have been more reluctant to cooperate... notice the difference between what's going on in Dare County (Outer Banks down to Hatteras, NC) to the way the beaches are being handled on Ocracoke Island (Hyde County) and the Core Banks (Carteret County down to Cape Lookout and Shackleford Banks).).

I have a house in South Nags Head, and I follow what's happening on this issue closely, and volunteer with the effort get these restrictions removed.

The radical environmental movement is huge, very activist, and very wealthy. When both God and communism failed in Europe, many of the true believers switched their allegiance to the cause of environmentalism, which is why radical environmentalists are referred to as watermelons— green on the outside, red in the center. And because of their firm belief in Utopia, they envision a world returned to wilderness where all the nasty capitalism, ugly cities and annoying people are no longer allowed. The endangered species act has been a godsend for them. You might enjoy this article and this debate.
