The press was simply giddy when Barack Obama’s convention speech attracted more viewers than any convention speech ever has. He had more viewers, they told us, than the Oscars, the finale of American Idol or the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. Good for him.
The question is, will they be as excited that both Sarah Palin and John McCain’s speeches each attracted even more viewers than Obama?
I won’t hold my breath.
More than 41 million viewers tuned in to Sarah Palin’s acceptance speech, making it not only the most viewed acceptance speech in history, bigger than the Oscars, bigger than the Olympics and bigger than American Idol, but bigger than the Obamessiah — and nearly twice as many viewers as Joe Biden.
Indeed, new polling shows that Sarah Palin is more popular than Obama or McCain.
But Palin wan’t the only one to attract more viewers than Obama, so did John McCain:
Across all broadcast networks Thursday, Sen. McCain’s speech ended the night with a 4.8 rating/7 share, compared to Sen. Obama’s 4.3/7 average, according to overnight numbers from metered households in 55 U.S. markets measured by Nielsen.

Naturally, the Obama camp came out swinging against Palin:
Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency. Governor Palin shares John McCain’s commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil and continuing George Bush’s failed economic policies — that’s not the change we need, it’s just more of the same.
Besides the obvious omission of her governorship, and the ridiculous charge that she represents more of the same, and the jaw-dropping charge from Barack Obama that she lacks experience, its funny that the Obama camp claimed McCain, “put the former mayor… a heartbeat away from the presidency.” Are they conceding they’ve already lost?

The McCain camp has launched a new ad mocking the Obamessiah, clearly inspired by this brilliant piece in the (London) Times Online.
I think it’s a great ad: I hope we see a lot more like it. And unlike some other conservatives, I think it will be highly effective. The Obama campaign is very long on style, and has arrogance in abundant supply, but is astoundingly short on substance. Mockery is the best way to point it out.
We shall see.
Whatever bump Obama might have had after his “See how Presidential I look” tour of Europe is gone. The race is now literally tied according to the latest Gallup polls. I don’t see how that can be good news for Obama. We’ll see which direction the polls go.

And lo, in Mesopotamia, a miracle occurred. Even though the Great Surge of Armour that the evil Bush had ordered had been a terrible mistake, a waste of vital military resources and doomed to end in disaster, the Child’s very presence suddenly brought forth a great victory for the forces of the light. Democrats WON’T ALLOW more drilling…
…because they DON’T WANT you to be able to afford gas!!!
If you want affordable transportation any time this decade, or next — if you want electricity to remain affordable — you damn well better vote Republican this fall. They are the only party that is in favor of increasing all our domestic energy supplies.

For the third time in three years, Kent Couch of Bend, Oregon has taken to the skies in a lawnchair supported by nothing more than 150 helium party balloons. He carries with him a BB gun and blowgun in case he gets too high, and 15 gallons of cherry Kool-Aid as ballast to release if he gets too low — and one supposes, to drink if he gets thirsty.
Couch hopes to fly his chair all the way to Idaho. Last year, he flew 193 miles to northeastern Idaho. I just hope he makes it safely back to Earth.
ADDENDUM: Mr. Couch flew his lawn chair more than 200 miles across eastern Oregon, and touched down gently in a pasture just outside Cambridge, Idaho. Cambridge is a very small farming community with a population of around 300, located on the Weiser River in central Idaho. Half the town turned out to see him.
The flight took about nine hours. Mr. Couch says “Things just look different from up there. You’re moving so slowly. The best thing is the peace, the serenity.” He said he’d go to 30,000 feet if he didn’t shoot a balloon every now and then. He carried a Red Ryder BB gun and a blow gun equipped with steel darts to control the lift, and a parachute in case he popped too many balloons.
