As we draw nearer to the beginning of another school year, Michelle Malkin has drawn our attention to the disturbing fact that for an increasing number of school districts “back to school” doesn’t mean a return to learning. For many of our “educators” academics are subsidiary to political indoctrination for our children.
In Massachusetts, the John J. Duggan Middle School will open on August 25, with a new name and a new mission. It is now a “social justice magnet school.” A hiring advertisement for teachers explained earlier this year, the emphasis will be on “helping students develop the necessary skills to analyze and synthesize information and to generate empathy by looking at multiple sides of important issues facing the world, be that hunger, water quality, racial barriers, child labor or imbalance of power.
The new principal says the school’s primary job i teaching “fairness.” They are serious about creating 21st century global citizens.
At the Crescent Heights Social Justice Magnet School in Los Angeles, children will work on “action projects: tied to the “United Nations Millennium Development Goals” Yes the will learn language arts. But basic reading and writing are only a focus of the magnet school, the founders explain, because “we want our students to recognize injustice in their world or the world at large and be able to fully express their outrage, their plan of attack, their progress in this endeavor.”
In Chicago, Ground Zero for social justice brainwashing, the Social Justice High School (SOJO) follows a similar mission. Activist teachers openly foster identity politics and systematically undermine individualism. Their specialties: “struggle and sacrifice.” SOJO’s mission statement sounds like a pot-addled Oberlin College freshperson’s Sociology 101 term paper.
At the Paulo Freire Social Justice Charter School, also in Massachusetts, students won’t learn math. They’ll be taught “social justice math.” (Freire was a Brazilian leftist who wrote a social justice teacher’s Bible called “Pedagogy of the Oppressed.”)
His acolytes explain the push for radicalization of math: “Math is an instrument for detailing social justice issues and developing critical consciousness.” In the hands of progressive teachers, math “becomes an analytic tool to bring awareness to important world issues.”
Do read the whole thing. I had no idea. Transforming our schools into “leftist agitation labs” isn’t quite what we had in mind when we advocated reform for our schools. My schools were not up to the demanding curriculum of my parents’ schools, and its been all downhill since then, and keeps getting worse. Kids no longer learn cursive writing, for it is assumed they will always use a keyboard. Thank you letters? Just tweet to Granny. And with a calculator always right at hand, who needs basic math? History? Howard Zinn’s little hate America handbook.
Magnet schools, eh. One would hope they draw no interest, and it’s hard to imagine that any parents would do so much to damage their kids. I suspect I’m wrong.

The big push is on. A new nonprofit group, “Enroll America,” has just launched a campaign they call “Get Covered America” to help the uninsured in particular learn about ObamaCare and how to sign up for it,which everyone is required to carry starting in 2014.
Most Americans are aware of the 2010 Affordable Care Act’s requirement that Americans must carry health insurance or pay a fine. 81% say they know about the law, but whether they know the details is another question. However 43% of the uninsured (That celebrated group for whom the whole law was supposedly written) are unaware that they must get coverage.
Three in Four Americans are at least somewhat familiar with ObamaCare— 16 % say they are very familiar with it, and 59% are ‘somewhat’ familiar. This does not sound promising. Far larger numbers of citizens believe the health care law will make their family’s health care situation and the healthcare situation in the country much worse. Eighty-four percent of Republicans believe ObamaCare will be worse for the country. Sixty-two percent of Democrats think it will make things better.
Democrats are generally inclined to believe that anything their party does is good. They consider remarks, columns or studies from Republican sources as just evil partisanship, and not worth reading or considering. Democrats have always been told that the holy grail of progressive ideology is single-payer health care, when everyone is equal before the medical establishment and the government pays for it. So they are inclined to be true believers right off the bat.
Republicans know that that bit about “the government pays for it” is patent nonsense, since the government has no money of its own—only taxpayer money, and estimates of how much the damn thing is going to cost are going through the roof. If past history means anything, the estimates will be way too low.
Republicans are inclined to look for evidence, and many are aware that the Democrat claim that they were just copying Mitt Romney’s plan for Massachusetts was a lie from the beginning. All of Obama’s health care advisers were great admirers of Britain’s’ National Health Service (NHS). What Democrats care about is winning. They want to permanently win all elections and have the Republican party, Libertarians, Tea Party or anyone else who disagrees with them not just fail, but disappear. England has the oldest nationalized health service, since shortly after the War, and it has meant, for the most part Labour victories at the polls. Even though their health care system was not too good, the Brits didn’t want to lose their “free” health care.
Socialized medicine’s most poorly understood problem is that it gets all the incentives wrong. The goal of the government is to keep costs down. That means there is less innovation, cheaper drugs are preferred over more expensive (and newer) ones. With the government’s pressure on costs, the goal of the medical establishment becomes trying to get adequately paid. (You can see that in action with Medicare in this country. The administration tries to save money by cutting remuneration to the doctors, fewer doctors will see Medicare patients. Congress has to step in with the “doc fix”)
Headline in the Daily Mail: “Nearly 1.200 people have starved to death in NHS hospitals because ‘nurses are too busy to feed patients.”‘For every patient who dies from malnutrition, four more have dehydration mentioned on their death certificate. In 2011, 43 patients starved to death and 291 died in a state of severe malnutrition.” They are trying to fix it. But ObamaCare already includes the Independent Pay Advisory Board (IPAB) which is designed to refuse treatment or procedures that the bureaucrats on the board deem too expensive for the number of years the old person has left. So far they haven’t been able to find people to serve. (This is what Sarah Palin called the” Death Panel” that Democrats sneered at.)
So how is Secretary Sebelius going to get people signed up? The Los Angeles Unified School District will use a state grant to train teenagers to promote ObamaCare to their parents and family friends.”Teens are part of a ‘pilot program’ to test whether young people can be trained as ‘messengers’ to deliver outreach and limited education to family and friends in and around their homes.” LAUSD will also use tax-paid staff to promote ObamaCare through phone calls to student’s homes, in-class presentations, and meetings with eligible employees. Welcome to the Soviet Unified Indoctrination Union. Ms. Sebelius also plans to enlist librarians. She’s tried to enlist the NFL, but they’ve turned her down, but The NBA may go for it. The LAUSD will receive $990,000 from the State’s health insurance exchange for their efforts to indoctrinate the kids.
Well, the schools are busy indoctrinating kids anyway. If this effort works, they can train the kids to report on those who refuse to sign up. Turning in your family can’t be far behind. This all seems highly unethical and improper to me, but the Democrats remain clueless.
