President Bush Cleans-up After Another Clinton Mess by American Elephant

Kim Jong Il

Iraq, Iran, North Korea, al Qaeda — Bill Clinton was a popular president precisely because he did nothing serious to address the gathering threats of the world.

He thought regime change in Iraq so essential that he made it the official policy of the United States — and then did nothing. Al Qaeda attacked US interests, including the first attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, on average at least every two years throughout the Clinton presidency and Osama Bin Laden declared war on the United States.

Yet despite Sandy Berger’s best attempts to destroy the evidence, we now know the Clinton administration never took al Qaeda seriously and passed on several opportunities to kill or take custody of Osama bin Laden for fear of paying a political price (much like the one President Bush is paying now).

It’s easy to be popular when you don’t rock any boats.

As the historical record shows, some of the most unpopular presidents in our nation’s history — Abraham Lincoln, Harry Truman, Ronald Reagan for example —  have also turned out to be among the greatest. No matter which direction you lead, you will always ruffle the feathers of those who want to go in the other direction.

But as the Clinton presidency has proven, ignoring the world’s dangers does not make them go away — it only allows them to gather strength and become more dangerous.

Unfortunately, Bill Clinton’s presidency also shows the danger of addressing the world’s dangers with feckless, toothless policy.

Clinton’s “Agreed Framework” with North Korea was just such a feckless, toothless policy. Under the bi-lateral agreement, North Korea would agree to stop enrichment of uranium, while the US would provide billions in oil and humanitarian aid and would convert NK’s weapons-capable graphite moderated reactors to light-water reactors (not capable of plutonium production.)

We now know the agreement was a complete farce, and that Pyongyang kept right on working on their nuclear weapons program under the Clinton administration’s nose.

Clinton made the agreement directly with Pyongyang, with no involvement or additional pressure from North Korea’s neighbors. His agreement also required no verification that North Korea was meeting its obligations.

Democrats have insisted ever since that President Bush follow in the footsteps of Clinton’s failed policy and negotiate with Kim Jong Il one on one.

But President Bush knew that the way forward was not to repeat Clinton’s failures. He has insisted from the beginning that North Korea’s neighbors, particularly China, participate in multi-nation talks and add their formidable influence to the mix. Bush knew that North Korea’s neighbors, particularly China (on which Pyongyang is most dependent), were essential to forcing an agreement that would stick and that could be verified.

Now President Bush has achieved just such an accord:

North Korean Nuclear Accord Reached

North Korea will disable key nuclear facilities by the end of the year and start disclosing details of its nuclear programs under a six-nation agreement released today in China. The deal appears to have been aided by a “side understanding” between Washington and Pyongyang that could accelerate the removal of North Korea from a U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism.

The United States also appeared willing to accept, initially, more limited action than it originally sought to disable three key nuclear facilities at Yongbyon, with the understanding that additional work to incapacitate the facilities would occur later. In exchange, North Korea is expected to disclose the extent of its weapons-grade plutonium, including how much was used in a nuclear test last year.

According to the text of the document, released by China’s official Xinhua news agency, North Korea agreed to disable the 5 megawatt experimental reactor at Yongbyon, a fuel reprocessing plant, and a nuclear fuel rod facility by Dec. 31. The work will be paid for and overseen by the U.S.   [read more]

It doesn’t accomplish everything, but it’s a major step, its verifiable and it’s certainly more meaningful than all of Madeline Albright’s dancing with Korean children and champagne sipping with Kim Il Sung and Clinton’s empty self-congratulations put together.

President Bush may be unpopular with some now and probably will always be unpopular with some people BUT I do believe after all is said and done, discounting some of the mistakes he has made with finance and immigration, he will go down in history as an addition to the list with Lincoln, Truman and Reagan. Who in hell would want to be equated to Bill Clinton???

You’re correct that a lot of people think Clinton was a great president. A lot of people cant find the United States on a world map let alone understand the issues or American civics. Fortunately presidential greatness is not determined by a popularity poll of the ignorant masses.

As I said before, some of our most unpopular presidents are also widely recognized as being our greatest. Abraham Lincoln was a highly unpopular president. Harry Truman had lower approval ratings than President Bush and ignorant lefties loathed and protested President Reagan then the same way they loathe and protest President Bush today. Nonetheless both are rated among the greatest presidents we’ve ever had.

Were you aware there was a serious movement to impeach George Washington? Of course you werent. You think Clinton was a great president. Not because he was, but because you are historically ignorant. Clinton is probably one of the few presidents you’re familiar with.

And while you claim Clinton was a popular president, keep in mind he never got even a bare majority of the vote in either of his elections. Doesnt really support your claim does it.

A survey was done of presidential scholars. A bi-partisan survey including an equal number of liberal and conservative scholars. And when you look at how the experts rate Clinton, they now rate him as twenty-fourth out of the thirty-nine presidents they rated. And his ranking has been falling every year the more is learned about his presidency. A generation from now he will be recognized as one of the most corrupt presidents in our history and even further below average.

He ranks below average already beacuse he didnt do anything. He was fortunate to have been president when the dot.com boom happened, but only an idiot could claim he had anything to do with it. There is however, a good case that his administrations anti-trust lawsuit against Microsoft hastened and worsened the bust. He ignored al Qaeda, he agreed that saddam was a danger that needed to be removed but was too concerned about his approval ratings to do anything about it. He exacerbated tension in the middle east by trying to force a bad agreement in his lust for a legacy, and he paid billions to north korea while they continued to enrich uranium under his nose.

No, Bill Clinton was very popular, but he will be remembered in history as one of our most corrupt and ineffectual, and he will surely rank far below President Bush.

A ‘good president’ does NOT cheat his way into office (twice), send America to war on false premisis, and spend more than we can pay off in three generations. I love how you have so conveniently not mentioned the Wepons of Mass Destruction lie.

Please, inform yourself.

A ‘good president’ does NOT cheat his way into office

You are correct. That’s one of the many reasons George Bush is a great president. Unlike Al Gore who actually did try to cheat his way into office. Fortunately, the Supreme Court decided by a 7 to 2 majority that what Al Gore was trying to do was indeed unconstitutional (in other words cheating) and they stopped him. The 5-4 decision was only a disagreement about how to stop Gore from cheating.

Fortunately, that decision probably paid a large role in Kerry’s decision to not try to steal the election as so many of you lying, stealing, cheating liberals were encouraging him to do.

You’ll also notice that the only people found guilty of vote fraud have been, as usual, Democrats. (ACORN was found guilty of vote fraud in many states, a sitting Democrat congressman’s son was sent to jail for slashing GOP “get out the vote” van’s tires, etc)

send America to war on false premisis(sic)

And President Bush didn’t send us to war on false premises, as four bipartisan and nonpartisan investigations have proven. He sent us to war based on the 23 reasons enumerated in the AUMF, overwhelmingly passed by both parties in both houses of congress and because even with the US military on his borders, Saddam Hussein still refused to fully cooperate with the worlds demands.

and spend more than we can pay off in three generations

According to the non-partisan, liberal leaning GAO, we were on track to have the budget deficit erased by 2009, at which time we would have surplusses with which we could begin paying down the debt. That is until Democrats got in office and started writing the budgets. Spending has greatly increased since Democrats took control and both Hillary and Obama are pledging to increase spending by at the very least another 900 billion to 1.2 trillion dollars.

I am very glad you agree that anyone who wants a “good president” must vote against both Hillary and Obama.

Please, inform yourself.

Oh, I am very informed. Now it is my job to inform ignorant libtards such as yourself.

I don’t know where you are getting your hysterical and blitheringly idiotic information, but I assure you, President Bush has not bombed North Korea, which is the topic of this post, and I can also assure you, Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda are not innocent.

Do try to grow up.

Comment by BUSHES WORSE ENEMY

Bush’s worse enemy, you need to read something besides DU and Daily Kos. Bill Clinton was a mediocre president who was lucky enough to have a Dot-com boom during his administration. We had a small surplus. Employment rates were much higher during the Bush administration until this latest crisis. And due to the Bush tax cuts (and no, the rich didn’t get the biggest tax cut — that was a lie) the economy has done much better than under Clinton in spite of 9/11 and Katrina which were big hits on a healthy economy. Yes, I know that Democrats have been trying hard to talk the economy down, but the actual statistics are quite clear.

The current crisis is a credit crisis, mostly not in everyday consumer loans, but inter-bank credit, which had it’s origins in a well-meaning law passed in the Carter administration to encourage home-ownership in poor minority neighborhoods. Bill Clinton didn’t think the growth in such loans was proceeding fast enough, and a law was passed demanding that lenders relax their standards for loans under penalty of large fines. Democrats pushed again and again for lower standards. Freddie and Fannie were deeply involved, and did some funny accounting to get the executives bigger bonuses.

By the way, the North Pole isn’t melting. An NBC team of reporters was sent up to film the “melting” North Pole and the terrible global warming, and have been stuck in the ice for weeks. Democrats have been desperate to win back power. There
really is no corruption.

Please read Popular Mechanics’ report on 9/11 and the myths about the buildings coming down. They sent engineers and scientists to study the situation and reported in the magazine. They also did a fine report on the Katrina myths.

North Korea is a problem. Kim Jong Il may be ill, dying, dead, who knows. We don’t know who is in charge. It’s very hard to figure out how to deal with a nuclear-armed nutcase. FDR responded quickly to Pearl Harbor, by preparing to invade North Africa. He was right on some things, wrong on others. He made the Depression far longer than it needed to be, instituted a lot of big government programs that we still suffer from, but did pretty well on the war until Yalta.

You would benefit from studying some history, and trying to understand it from both sides. You’ll find that Bush has been a pretty good president who has had some humongous problems on his watch.
