A Movie Hollywood Won’t Make, and Liberals Won’t Watch by American Elephant

And one people should see. Especially liberals — if only they’d pull their heads out of the sand long enough.

This is the highly anticipated “Fitna”, a short-film (15 minutes) from Dutch politician Geert Wilders. As you may recall, the Netherlands has been besieged by violence from Islamic fundamentalists angry over cartoon depictions of Mohammad and criticism of Islam. This is his answer. He describes it as “a call to shake off the creeping tyranny of Islamization.”

YouTube cuts the film into two parts. Keep in mind, “Fitna” addresses Islamic fundamentalism and as such shows graphic violence. Powerful. Do watch.

Religion is pretty intense.

What other institution can incite people to such acts?

Religion is pretty intense.

This is not the work of “religion”. This is the work of one particularly evil subset of one religion. To try to smear all religion with it isn’t fair or even remotely accurate.

You might read up on the horrors of Naziism and Communism. Both collectivist, not religious (and in the case of Communism, strictly atheist) movements.

I’m pretty certain that Christianity has galvanized its adherents to fight or to support fighting. In fact, it’s being done in the video. Nazism, Communism, and Religion use the same method: Fear. When your scared you can do or be in favor of some pretty awful things.

The video is made to frighten you. People who are scared generally follow instructions better. In the case of Nazism and Communism good old police state fear and paranoia. In the case of religion, it’s usually an appeal the the fear that your religion is going to be overrun and replaced with another one.

Where in the video is anyone fighting anyone in the name of Christianity?

My, you do have your liberal bumper-sticker talking points down don’t you. Unfortunately taking people at their word when they declare war on you and then follow it up with hundreds of acts of war isn’t fear, its realism.

Equating Western Civilization’s defending itself against those who have attacked and continue to seek to attack it to terrorism, Naziism and Communism is beyond asinine.

I’m all for Western Civilization defending itself. I love my country.

But I take issue with your attitude that we’re fighting some great war of righteousness here. It’s dishonest to say that we are at war with people who hate us for indefensible reasons.

I’d like it better if we act like grown ups and admit to ourselves that the policies of our government over the last sixty years in regard to the middle east have had a part to play in this war.

Surely we knew the risks when we started operating in the middle east after WW2. Surely our leaders had intelligence on the Islamic cultures we were mixing ourselves and our soldiers into. But somewhere along the line someone quit paying heed and started brushing people the wrong way and backing the wrong horse from time to time. Eventually our very presence made it easier for the radicals to come to power.

And now they’ve got armies of adherents ready to attack our people all over the globe. And it’s scary and it sucks. And as much as anyone I want my children to grow up in a safe world.

And the ultimate sadness of the salesmanship for the war on terror, taking forms in videos like this one, is that a simplified “they hate our freedom” theme makes it so much easier for the citizenry to accept the erosion of our civil liberties.

I’m glad to hear you love your country. Its good that we have that in common. Then I ask you to, for the sake of your country, open your mind up to the possibility that you are very wrong, because I can demonstrate that you are.

But I take issue with your attitude that we’re fighting some great war of righteousness here.

Yes, we absolutely are fighting a great war of righteousness here. We seek to win war while taking great effort and expense in blood and treasure to avoid as many civilian casualties as possible. They seek to win their Jihad by targeting civilians. They intentionally kill innocent women and children, they shield themselves with civilians. They strap bombs to children and severely retarded girls, people who are absolutely incapable of informed consent, and train them to blow themselves up in a manner that will kill as many civilians as possible.

There is a reason Western Civilization utterly rejects and has long since outlawed terrorism — precisely because it is evil. It absolutely 100% morally irrelevant if they have legitimate grievances or not, even if their grievances were completely just, intentionally targeting civilians is evil.

It’s dishonest to say that we are at war with people who hate us for indefensible reasons.

There is nothing whatsoever dishonest about believing radical fundamentalists when they tell us in their own words why they hate us and why they attack us. Its realism.

I’d like it better if we act like grown ups and admit to ourselves that the policies of our government over the last sixty years in regard to the middle east have had a part to play in this war.

Sorry, modern radical fundamentalist Islamic terror got its start long before that. Islamic fundamentalists were using terrorism as far back as the 1920s.

The problem with your argument is that you are making up your own rationale (or parroting what you have heard other liberals say) for why they are attacking the West instead of listening to them. And the proof that your arguments are wrong is that they don’t address the facts.

The fact is that Islamic terrorists are waging Jihad all over the globe. Not just against America, not just against Israel, not just against the West. Your rationalization doesn’t explain why Islamic Jihadists are slaughtering other Muslims who don’t believe what they believe. It doesn’t explain why the same radical wing of Islam is waging Jihad in Africa, throughout Asia, Russia and Eastern Europe and the middle east instead of just against America and the West. If they are waging Jihad because of Americas policy in the middle east, then why are they blowing up Buddhist temples in the Phillipenes? Why are they slaughtering other Muslims in Africa?

Your rationalization doesn’t explain any of this for the very simple reason that it is not the reasoning of the terrorists, it is the reasoning of western liberals, projecting their beliefs onto terrorists.

But all you have to do to see how very wrong you and the left are is listen to the radical fundamentalists themselves. They tell us in both their public communications to us and their private communications to each other, why they are waging jihad on the the west and the rest of the world.

This comment section is not the right place to get into it — maybe I will write another more detailed post on my blog, because these ideas that you and the left have manufactured truly are ignorant.

Until then, I invite you to watch an even better movie called Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West.” You can watch it for free on YouTube. It is an hour long documentary told mostly by moderate Muslims. Because it is on YouTube, it is split into 10 segments.

The I also invite you to read the books In Their Own Words: Newly Translated Writings of the al Qaeda Leaders by Raymond Ibrahim. The Looming Tower: al Qaeda and the Road to 9-11 by Lawrence Wright just for starters. I will provide much more reading in the post i will write for my blog.

If nothing else, please watch Obsession. It is extremely well made and well documented. A much higher quality fim than Fitna.

I watched Fitna and Submission on YouTube and was horrified. Most Christians are tolerant enough to allow criticism, ridicule and rejection of their faith in western society and realize that its opinion. Islam would never allow such things.

This is a battle of civilizations, unfortunately the political, social and academic left will not lift a finger to do battle because they adhere to the old saying “The enemy of my enemy is my friend” As long as Islam has a foe in George Bush, the center right political forces, capitalism and the US, just like the political, social and academic left, they will not lift a finger to help defeat it.

Look at how Islam treats women and gays, the left does and says nothing. No UN resolutions, no boycotts, no telethons, marches, protests, nothing…. Sadly if Islam wins, the left will be the first ones hanged, have their throats slit or have walls pushed over on them.

I want human beings to find ways to peacefully live together. I guess that puts me on the left. But it doesn’t flow that my enemy is the center right, capitalism, or the US. Unless you care to argue that the center right, capitalism, or the US is against peace.

Well, Mark, it seems that you have argued that in saying that wanting peace “puts [you] on the left.” Being a conservative does not require that one be constantly desirous of oppression, strife, war, and death. The arguments of today’s “liberals” always devolve to ad hominem attacks upon any and all who disagree with the [simplistic and generally erroneous] tenets of the left.

Labels such as ignorant, stupid, racist, warmonger, Nazi, baby killer, and so on are freely applied to anyone who would dare to point out flaws in the reasoning of a liberal — by the liberals, of course, who pride themselves in being accepting, open-minded, and nonjudgmental. You have done exactly that in your post above when you rather clumsily imply that anyone who might desire peace is “…on the left.”

Really, now…
