Obama embarrases himself again. by The Elephant's Child

Barack Obama has a new commercial out, making fun of John McCain because he does not use a computer or a cell phone, trying to imply that McCain is old and behind the times.  Things have changed since 1982 when John McCain first came to Congress, the ad says, accompanied by images of a Commodore computer and other icons from the 80s.

Obama blew it again.  Embarrassing.  John McCain cannot use a keyboard because of the injuries he received in the Hanoi Hilton.  That has been known for years.  A little fact-checking would be in order.  Almost like Joe Biden asking a gentleman confined to a wheelchair to stand up.  Not cool.

ADDENDUM:

A Boston Globe story from March 2000 says:

McCain’s severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes….
After Vietnam, McCain had Ann Lawrence, a physical therapist, help him regain flexibility in his leg, which had been frozen in an extended position by a shattered knee.  It was the only way he could hope to resume his career as a Navy flier, but Lawrence said the treatment, taken twice a week for six months, was excurciatingly painful.
“He endured it, he wouldn’t settle for less,” said Lawrence, who rejoiced with McCain when he passed the Navy physical.  “I have never seen such toughness and resolve.”

A simple Google News search using the terms “john mccain keyboard” turn up a Forbes article from May 2000 that turns up on the first page of results:

In certain ways, McCain was a natural Web candidate.  Chairman of the Senate Telecommunications Subcommittee and regarded as the U.S. Senate’s savviest technologist, McCain is an inveterate devotee of email. His nightly ritual is to read his email together with his wife, CindyThe injuries he incurred as a Vietnam POW make it painful for McCain to type.  Instead, he dictates responses that his wife types on a laptop. “She’s a whiz on the keyboard, and I’m so laborious,” McCain admits.

The Obama crew apparently not only could not get their story straight, they made Obama look like a jerk for picking on McCain about his injuries, reminded the public of who is a hero, and exposed the simple technological idiocy of not even checking their stories on Google.
Hat tip to Suitably Flip.

if you do more fact checking, you;ll notice that a guy that is completely paralyzed such as Stephen Hawking still manages to read and send emails by himself (assisted by his computer)

Yes and Stephen Hawking has a special computer. It was a silly ad by Obama. He’s not going to get anywhere by trying to belittle a highly revered senator for being older than he is. If he disagrees on issues, explain why his ideas are better. If he wants to poke gentle fun at someone, don’t be nasty about it. He’s coming across as desperate and angry.

I have heard so many Obama supporters lately saying that Obama is running a positive campaign and that he is sticking to the issues. I am wondering if they are so far under his spell that they can not see the trees in the forest. That or they are cut off from all TV and radio signals.

Heard some polls lately, only 13% of Americans can explain the difference between the parties. Over 60% of American self-identify as conservative and half that identify themselves as Liberal. People are just finding out that the Democrats are in charge of Congress, and that we are actually winning in Iraq. We underestimate the extent to which people pay no attention whatsoever to politics or current events.

I don’t believe in polls with sample sizes of 1000. Democrats out-registered rivals by 11 millions. They shouldn’t have to worry despite the Palin bounce…

Ahh, but over 60% of Americans self-identify as Conservative, while only around 30% self-identify as Liberal. And people are just beginning to pay attention. We’ll see.

The other thing I don’t get, is why McCain can use cell phone but not the keyboard… and there’s always the mouse~

Apparently because it hurts like hell. McCain is a Senator, with a large staff to research stuff on the internet, send messages, and report their findings. His wife helps him with e-mail at home. He was a bomber pilot and fighter pilot — have you ever seen the cockpit of a plane — he is certainly no innocent in technology, and chairman of the Telecommunications subcommittee as well. The Obama attack was silly, no one did their homework. It would be wise to stick to issues and stop trying to portray McCain as ancient (did you see his 96 yr. old mother?. These things reflect poorly on Obama and his advisors.
