Now that Obama has “distanced” himself from his radical friends at ACORN, saying that , oh yes, he did some pro-bono legal work for them way back thirteen years ago, it is a little awkward when so many reputable sources explain his long and close association with the group.

Confronted with accusations of wrong doing, Obama is playing pure Chicago politics.  He has called for a “Special Prosecutor” in the ACORN investigation. Bob Bauer, the Obama campaign’s general counsel said on Friday:

What they’re actually about is the unprecedented effort to essentially sap the American people of confidence in the voting process.

Well, yes, when election officials announce that they have more people on their voting rolls than they have people of voting age in six Alabama counties, or municipal clerks across the state of Michigan report fraudulent and duplicate voter registration applications, most of them from ACORN workers.  In Wisconsin, ACORN hired as voter registration workers at least seven felons convicted of crimes including cocaine possession and robbery, who are not allowed to serve as registration workers.  In Indiana, Lake County officials have had to reject a large portion of 5,000 registration forms turned in by ACORN bearing the names of dead and underage people.  In Connecticut, 8,500 dead people remained registered to vote, and at least 300 seem to have voted since they died. The FBI has raided ACORN offices in Las Vegas.

The actions of ACORN are inclined to sap the American people of confidence in the voting process.  But that is not what Obama is on about.  He demands that the Department of Justice stop the ACORN probe.  (That probably would be convenient for Obama)

He wants Special Prosecutor Dannehy, who is investigating the bogus, politically motivated claim that there was something improper in firing U.S. Attorneys who serve at the pleasure of the President, to tack on to that a:

review of any involvement by Justice Department and White House officials in supporting the McCain-Palin campaign and the Republican National Committees…systematic development and dissemination of unsupported, spurious allegations of vote fraud.  It is highly likely that the very sort of politically motivated conduct identified in the Department’s investigation to date, necessitating the appointment of a Special Proseutor, is repeating itself, and for the same reason: unwarranted and politically motivated intervention in the upcoming election.  An investigation must be entrusted to government officials who do not have an improper political motivation or a conflict of interest, either in fact or appearance.

What that takes is an immense amount of pure gall.

Obama’s lawyer did not notice, we are in the midst of a political campaign, not a coronation, and the alleged criminal activity he calls ‘recent partisan Republican activities’ are what the rest of us call campaign speeches and debates.”

Obama does not like to be criticized, or to have his questionable associations pointed out.  He prefers to remain a man of mystery, available only to inspire his worshipers.  Attempts to criminalize those who criticize shows either a very poor understanding of the law by someone who has lectured on the constitution, or an unpleasant streak of arrogance.
