It’s Time To Stand Up And Be Counted, People! by The Elephant's Child

If you have not called or e-mailed your Representative, it’s time to do it.  Nancy Pelosi is trying to force through a vote on the Waxman/Markey climate bill by Friday.  No debate, no floor discussion,  every legislative maneuver to rush it through quickly will be employed.  They don’t want any input from you stupid voters out there.  Surprise them.

This bill is a disaster for America.  It is a big net job killer.  Utility costs will skyrocket.  It would reduce global temperatures (the supposed aim of the legislation) by 2050 by an amount too small to measure.  It will invest useless billions in supposed “clean energy” that cannot produce electricity in a cost effective manner now,  nor in the foreseeable future.  Doesn’t work.  In Spain, their wind energy investment killed 2 jobs in the wider economy  for every “green job” created.  And that’s without even knowing all the economic disasters they have written into the bill.  It’s not available for anyone to read it.  Why is that not a surprise? It is officially and euphemistically HR 2454 “The American Clean Energy and Security Act.”

For e-mail: www.house.gov.  For the House switchboard, call (202) 225-3121 to reach your Representative.

Local Girls Wow America’s Got Talent by American Elephant

The Abraham sister’s, or the EriAm Sister’s as they call their group, were a big hit last night on “America’s Got Talent”. Haben (11), Salina (13), and Lianda (15) are from right here in the Pacific Northwest, just down the road in Renton, Washington. And yes, they have talent. The audience gave them a standing ovation and chanted their demand that the judges send them to the next round in Las Vegas. The judges agreed.

I know who I will be rooting for this season, unless of course someone I like better comes along. But that name has to go.

Get a Little “Uncommon Knowledge”. You’ll Be Glad You Did. by The Elephant's Child

Uncommon Knowledge is back this week as host Peter Robinson interviews Dambisa Moyo, author of Dead Aid; Why Aid Is Not working and How There Is a Better Way for Africa. Dambisa Moyo grew up in Zambia.  She holds a master’s degree from Harvard,an MBA from American University, and a doctorate from Oxford, and has worked for the World Bank and Goldman Sachs.

$1 trillion in aid to Africa over the last 50 years, she says, has done positive harm.  Ten percent of Africans in the 1970s lived in dire circumstances.  Today 70 percent of Africans live on less than $2 a day.  Life expectancy is declining and poverty is endemic.  The “glamor aid” business, so beloved by celebrities, is malignant.  The Chinese, on the other hand, are there to do business and create jobs.

Fascinating discussion, and well worth your time.  Each segment (of 5) is only about 7 minutes.  I recommend them highly. You will find all sorts of interesting people in previous interviews: Former Prime Minister of Australia John Howard, Thomas Sowell, John Bolton, Andrew Klavan are just a few.

Obama: More than Meets the Eye by American Elephant

The writers at Variety are quite taken aback over the new Transformers movie because it apparently portrays Obama as an appeaser:

the President wants to try “diplomacy” against the evil Decepticons and [an adviser] hints the President would consider handing over Shia LaBouf’s character to be killed by them…

In this movie, exactly one real-life politician is named: “President Obama.” They went out of their way to make sure they named the craven, obstructionist president as Obama.

Expect scathing reviews. The dejected author even went so far as to check that the campaign contributions of the movie makers were to the right people.

Personally, I don’t see what the big deal is. Aside from the obligatory goose/gander argument, it’s most likely what Obama would do!

Indeed, if the film wants to be even more realistic, it would have Obama seizing and nationalizing the Autobots (costing the taxpayers several trillion dollars), then giving them as a gift to his union buddies, ordering that they be turned into tiny, fuel efficient hybrids that nobody wants, while getting ACORN to register the Decepticons to vote!

But we take what we can get.
