Obama’s Dream Is a Nightmare for Americans. by The Elephant's Child

Healthcare reform was designed to accomplish three goals:

  • Provide health insurance coverage for all Americans.
  • Reduce insurance costs for individuals, businesses and government.
  • Increase quality of healthcare and the value received for each dollar of healthcare spending.

On this basis the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is a colossal failure.

Despite its passage, 21 million Americans will remain uninsured by 2019.  The bill will increase the costs of insurance by approximately $2,100 per family.  Premiums for American families in 2016 will be 10% to 13% higher than they otherwise would be.   Costs will increase by $2.7 trillion over the first 10 years, and will add more than $352 billion to the national debt.  This does not include more than $4.3 trillion in costs shifted to businesses, individuals and state governments.

Aside from those minor details,  ObamaCare is a constitutional threat to federalism itself.  As Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH) indicates above — never before has Congress exercised its power under Article 1, Section 8 of the Federal Constitution to force American citizens to purchase a private good or a service.

Congress is also intruding deeply into the internal affairs of the states, commandeering their officers, specifying in minute detail how they are to arrange health insurance markets within their borders, and determining the products that will be sold to their citizens.   If allowed to stand, this unprecedented concentration of political power in Washington will reduce the states to mere instruments of federal health policy.

Michael D. Tanner has a white paper explaining ObamaCare — and what we can expect — available at the Cato Institute, titled “Bad Medicine: A  Guide to the Real Costs and Consequences of the New Health Care Law.”  It is available for download, or for purchase starting July 13.

The best weapon is an informed citizenry.
