Ivar Giaever, Nobel laureate in Physics, Resigned from the American Physical Society. by The Elephant's Child

Here is the  Letter from Ivar Giaever, Nobel laureate in physics, to the American Physical Society this last week.

Subject: I resign from APS

Dear Ms. Kirby

Thank you for your letter inquiring about my membership. I did not renew it because I can not live with the statement below:

Emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities are changing the atmosphere in ways that affect the Earth’s climate. Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide as well as methane, nitrous oxide and other gases. They are emitted from fossil fuel combustion and a range of industrial and agricultural processes.

The evidence is incontrovertible: Global warming is occurring.

If no mitigating actions are taken, significant disruptions in the Earth’s physical and ecological systems, social systems, security and human health are likely to occur. We must reduce emissions of greenhouse gases beginning now.

In the APS  it is ok to discuss whether the mass of the proton changes over time and how a multi-universe behaves, but the evidence of global warming is incontrovertible?  The claim (how can you measure the average temperature of the whole earth for a whole year?) is that the temperature has changed from ~288.0 to ~288.8 degree Kelvin in about 150 years, which (if true) means to me is that the temperature has been amazingly stable, and both human health and happiness have definitely improved in this “warming” period.

Best regards,

Ivar Giaever
Nobel Laureate 1973

Mr. Giaver was an American Physical Society fellow, an honor bestowed on “only half of one percent” of the members, according to a spokesman.  He follows in the footsteps of U.C. Santa  Barbara Emeritus Professor of Physics Harold Lewis, a former APS fellow who resigned in 2010. Mr. Lewis called global warming “the greatest and most successful pseudoscientific fraud I have seen in my long life as a physicist.”

Other dissenters include Stanford University physicist and Nobel laureate Robert B. Laughlin, the late green revolution icon and Nobel laureate Norman Borlaug, Princeton physicist William Happer and World Federation of Scientists President Antonino Zichichi.  Not all these scientists agree on climate change, but they maintain an open mind about warming and what to do about it.

Those who insist that no respectable person dissents from the climate change “consensus” might keep these gentlemen in mind.  Mr. Gore, who dismisses anyone who disagrees with him,  just had a 24 hour telethon on his very own network to bully more people into agreeing with him.

Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide as well as methane, nitrous oxide and other gases. They are emitted from fossil fuel combustion and a range of industrial and agricultural processes.

That part of the statement almost no scientist would disagree with.

Where opinions differ is on what is happening to the climate, and to what extent humans are influencing it.

Personally, I do feel that humans are influencing the earth’s climate to a significant extent. They started influencing it as soon as they started clearing forests and encouraging a massive expansion of methane-emitting ruminants. They also began influencing it (in the direction of cooling) once they started emitting sulphur oxides, which reflect sunlight away from the earth (and account for why the CO2 we emit has not contributed more to warming). The difficulty is in isolating the effect humans have had on the climate from the very powerful effect of changes in solar output.

I have no problem with serious scientists having dissenting views, and being treated with respect for those views. That is how science is supposed to work.

The big mistake was creating an International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and then treating its consensus views as incontrovertible. It issued some pretty dodgy statements encouraging biofuels, so I suspect that it has made mistakes in other areas too.

You will note that Dr. Giaever’s reason for his resignation are clearly stated: “The evidence is incontrovertible. Global warming is occurring.” He explains in the next paragraphs.

The CERN CLOUD experiments cast doubt on the entire conventional idea that such warming as there is (not much) is a result of CO2 or greenhouse gases. The whole thing will have to be reassessed. The IPCC is not and never was a scientific organization. They state clearly on their website that they don’t do science. They report on the results of their computer climate programs, which cannot predict today’s climate. It was always a political organization with objectives other than science.
