We’ve all seen the University of California at Berkeley under siege from the antics of the Occupy crowd. It appears, however that it was worse than we knew. The UC Campus police have claimed that an Occupy protestor had an AK-47 on campus.
Pleading for protection from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the campus police got $200,000 to buy an “armored response counterattack truck”
Lt. Eric Tejada, a spokesman for the University police, said the university plans to use the vehicle along with neighboring counties in dangerous situations that could involve heavy weapons. Whoah. Mortars, cannon, rockets? Tejada said that although he does not know of any incident in the university’s 144-year history in which such a vehicle would have saved a life, they would have liked to deploy it in an incident such as last year, when they mistakenly believed a man had an AK-47 assault rifle.
A professor at the University of Virginia, Dewey Cornell, an expert in violence prevention and school safety said that approximately 4,800 four-year colleges in the U.S., and an average of 10 homicides per year on college campuses, the average college can expect a homicide about every 480 years.
The dirty little secret is that the downsizing military has leftover stuff, and police departments all over the country are just dying to get their hands on it. I mean who would not feel more — macho, in a vehicle like this? Vroom, vroom. And you were wondering about government spending?
