So Are Democrats Convinced “They Won?” by The Elephant's Child

The Democratic debate strategy was apparently to put on a show in which Biden would visually dominate Ryan. This will have two effects. The first is it will convince the Democrats that they “won” the debate. But it will probably not convince anyone else. On the contrary, Biden seems to have infuriated all the conservatives who were watching the proceedings. The basic effect of the Biden-Ryan debate on the Democrats is to reassure themselves that they are not sissies.

Biden is doing a war chant for the benefit of the base. They are making the poor old man dance. From some of the tweets, you get the sense that Biden is taking the act a little too far, past eccentric and into gibbering.

The theory I like is that Biden was trying to goad Ryan into responding in kind. When it didn’t work the first time, he just kept trying, getting more ridiculous in the process.

Biden’s antics also seem (for the moment, anyway) to distract from the reality that quite a bit of what he was saying just wasn’t true. To name just a few:
-That the Intelligence community didn’t tell them that Benghazi was a planned attack.
-That the mission in Libya never asked for additional security.
-That the HHS (through ObamaCare) would not force Catholic and other religious institutions to pay for, in ANY way, contraception, sterilization, and abortifacients (the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops has already released a statement calling him out on this).
-That he voted against the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq (he voted FOR both).

The whole thing, despite what many liberals are saying, is likely backfiring on the Democrats. Ryan held his composure, and showed that he was able to rise above the cartoon aspect Biden was intent on portraying (there’s already a Biden-as-Joker meme going around on the internet). The Republican ticket didn’t lose a single vote because of Ryan, but it is entirely likely that the Democrats lost several because of Biden. Women especially seem to have been put off by his boorish behavior.

I’m not sure why women would be more offended than men — because we try so hard to instill manners in our children and thus have a greater appreciation? But I was really put off, and tempted to turn the debate off, but I reluctantly stuck it through to the end. Lots of complete whoppers, and what weren’t lies were misstatements. I think a lot of it is just Democrat talking points, tested for effectiveness by Democrat focus groups, which don’t need to be true, only effective.
