The Left Behaving Badly, As Usual! by The Elephant's Child

The Koch brothers are at it again. The New York State Nurses Association, the NAACP New York State Conference, and SEIU Local 1199, among others marched to show their vast disapproval of the soon-to-be-built David H. Koch Center at New York-Presbyterian Hospital funded in part by a $100 million donation — from the man one prominent liberal recently predicted would go down in history as a “famously evil person. ”

That particular “prominent liberal” is Left-wing billionaire hedge fund tycoon Tom Steyer.  He recently announced a $100 million campaign in support of candidates who embrace tax increases and regulations to fight the scientific theory known as “climate change.” He remains torn between his opposition to The Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United and his support for American democracy. “I believe there should be a different system.” Steyer said. “But right now what we’re doing is accepting American democracy rules…that’s the system we believe in. He’s opposed to the Keystone pipeline as well. The Free Beacon‘s editors commented:

We await Steyer’s call for the immediate dismantling of famously evil institutions such as the David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT, the David H. Koch Center for ambulatory care at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, and the David H. Koch Cancer Research Center at Johns Hopkins University, the David H. and Julia Koch Research Program in Food Allergy Therapeutics at the Mount Sinai Medical Center, and the David H. Koch Center for Applied Research of Genitourinary Cancers at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, as well as the immediate return of the $325 million Koch has donated to medical and cancer research facilities across the country.

The donation was the largest in the hospital’s history, and will presumably mean new nursing jobs, so why ? It was International Women’s Day and the Koch’s are the primary funders of the “war on women’s reproductive rights, and behind the effort to defeat and repeal healthcare to all Americans.” huh?

One Minerva Solla offered: “If there ain’t gonna be no justice, there ain’t gonna be no peace!” Candice Sering of Gabriela NYC added:”Women hold up ahold the sky.” The comments and the pictures are particularly delightful.

Ben Kallos, a sitting city council member attended the protest against the addition of a new hospital care center in the neighborhood he represents — because Koch brothers.

So there you are. A day in the life of New York City. See how easy it is to rouse up the masses when there’s a really compelling issue.

Wow! All That’s Going On In The World, And The Democrats Are Going To Spend the Whole Night Making Speeches About Climate Change? by The Elephant's Child

A majority of Senate Democrats will today launch an overnight “talkathon” lasting until approximately 9:00 am Tuesday to — draw attention to Climate Change.

The overnight effort, organized by Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI) is part of the recently launched Senate Climate Action Task Force led by Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI).  In a statement, Senator Boxer said Democrats want to “wake  up Congress” to the dangers of climate change.

The goal, of course is media attention. Unfortunately, although they control the Senate, it isn’t a filibuster. There isn’t any legislation waiting for a vote, nor any timetable for any kind of action this year. They do, however have 28 senators scheduled to speak, but the party’s most vulnerable senators facing re-election are noticeably missing from the list of speakers, and perhaps from the list of attendees.

The last attempt at climate legislation was in 2010, when House Democrats narrowly approved a bill to cap carbon emissions. That particular bill was viewed as contributing to the party’s loss of control of the House. Senate Democrats never took it up.

The President has declared 2014 a “Year of Action” on Climate Change, which means that he intends to waste more taxpayer money on all things carbon. Secretary of State Kerry has proclaimed tackling climate change as “the future of our earth and of humanity. We need to elevate the environment in everything we do.” It is “our call to conscience as citizens of this fragile planet we inhabit.” He has also compared “climate deniers” to “Holocaust deniers,” and ordered American diplomats in his first department-wide policy guidance statement that “Protecting our environment and meeting the challenge of global climate change is a critical mission.  He urged “all chiefs of mission to make climate change a priority for all relevant personnel and to promote concerted action at posts and in host countries to address this problem.”

His first department-wide policy guidance statement! There has been no warming, none at all, for seventeen and a half years. I have noticed other things besides the climate heating up, and I’ll bet you have too.

Coincidentally, those other things heating up have a lot to do with climate change delusions. Europe went for  alternative energy in a big way with the result that they pay twice as much for their energy as we do, and the Germans pay three times as much. They are dependent at present on Russia for their natural gas, which makes them hesitant to take on Putin’s invasion of the Ukraine, or even to talk tough. Yet they have prior knowledge of Russian interference, and how it works. Which is why many are urging President Obama to open up our ability to export liquified natural gas to Europe to allay Russia ability to blackmail them.

I have no idea what the all-night whoop-de-do is supposed to accomplish. The environmental lobby is large and rich, and this may be to attract green money for the election later this year. They have always looked upon global warming as a path to achieve real social justice, whatever that is. Pathetic!

Liberal Intellectuals and Why They Are: by The Elephant's Child

From the preface to Jean François Revel’s Last Exit to Utopia: The Survival of Socialism in a post-Soviet Era, by Anthony Daniels:

[L]iberal democracy is not an ideology in the sense that Marxism or any other form of utopian political thought is an ideology; liberal democracy does not hold out the hope of a denouement of history in which all human contradictions are resolved, no conflicts can arise and everyone is ceaselessly—and one might almost add remorselessly—happy. It assumes that conflicts, difficulties, problems and dissatisfactions are inescapable characteristics of the human condition, and that the best that can be hoped for is compromise without slaughter, bringing with it some faint hope, though not the certainty of progress. There is no blueprint. …

Intellectuals, the justification for whose existence is that they have a superior understanding of the world to that of non-intellectuals, find it hard to accept that all understanding of empirical matters is partial, temporary, subject to revision and doubtful; and that any political system that does not take this into account will end up imposing lies (and worse) upon whole populations. There have been times and places in history, perhaps, when to impose a prori schema on society has not been utterly disastrous; but Europe in the twentieth century was decidedly not one of them.

But intellectuals not only want to think well of themselves; they want to be important. The attraction of ideology is that it offers a simple principle, or a few simple principles, by which to understand the world; and of course, it offers the prospect of power to those who know and wield those principles with the greatest facility. It seems to me likely that inside every Marxist Western intellectual there has been a Stalin trying to get out.

All About the Photo ID Controversy: by The Elephant's Child

The Justice Department is hell bent on preventing any state from requiring photo identification in order to vote. They attempt to claim that it is just like the poll tax, once required by Southern Democrats in Southern states to prevent blacks from voting.

Since you can get a photo ID in any state for free from the DMV, you need a photo ID to open a bank account, to cash a check, to buy an airplane ticket, to get benefits from the government, the claim seems more than a little specious. A photo ID is required to enter the Washington DC Justice Department building. The Justice Department’s claims should be laughed out of court, so to speak. It is a blatant, partisan effort to make minorities think that Republican want to keep them from voting, and Democrats want to ensure their right to vote. Embarrassing.
