Leonard Nimoy, who we knew and loved as Mr. Spock, pointy-eared and always logical, died today in his Los Angeles home. He was 83.

I met him when I worked at WEBN when I was going to school in Cincinnati. He seemed impressed that I wanted to talk to him about playing Paris on “Mission: Impossible”, a psychic in the TV pilot “Baffled!” (which never was picked up as a series, alas!), the narrator of “In Search Of…”, a series devoted to the unexplained, and as one of the few bad guys that Columbo ever lost his temper with. We also discussed his (then) upcoming production of “Vincent”, a one-man show where he portrays Vincent van Gogh’s brother Theo (many years later, I received Nimoy’s blessing doing that show myself).
Never mentioned Spock once.
We even got him to sing a version of “The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins”.
A very nice, intelligent, witty, and talented man.
