Facts Have a Way of Coming Out, In Spite of the Media. by The Elephant's Child

Of the 112 “protesters” arrested in Portland riots, 69 of them could not be found to have turned in a ballot, nor were registered to vote in Oregon. Interesting details largely unmentioned by the media.

Some Leftist remarked “Why can’t we run someone who’s beloved?”

The State of the State, And What Do We Do About It? by The Elephant's Child

I didn’t post anything yesterday, the freakouts around the country were just too much. When I got online this afternoon, checked my e-mail, and noticed the headline on one item “The Brain Restoration Project”, and I thought  ‘oh good, they’re doing something about these ignorant protests’, but no such luck. It was a phishing thing trying to get demented older people to sign up for their medicine to prevent Alzheimers. But it’s still all riots and freakouts or speculation about who will be the next person named to the incoming administration and what Trump will do.

Here is clearly part of the remedy, but too late, too late! They’ve already become infantalized. Puppies and coloring books at some colleges, chocolates and puppies elsewhere.

There is something drastically wrong with our colleges and universities. It’s not something wrong with the kids, it’s the administration who are offering safe spaces and coloring books and puppies. How did this happen? And why aren’t the parents who are footing the bill raising Cain? Certainly they did in the case of Mizzou, and it affected their bottom line pretty dramatically.

Of course under the Obama administration any university that receives federal money has been required to have diversity officers, same-sex bathrooms and I’m sure there have been many other rules handed down. The Left wants the kids indoctrinated, and that’s what is happening.

Boo Hoo! They Lost! We Won. Riots in the Streets! by The Elephant's Child

right-wing-riots

ABC News on the radio is talking about the protests, and counting up the popular vote for Hillary, with apparently no understanding of how an American election works.  We really need to make plain to the media just what their role as “the fourth estate” is. They are not supposed to be the cheering section for their personal preferences.  If they got into the news business to change the world, they need do some serious re-thinking. If that’s their choice, they need to sign on with a political campaign, and forget trying to be a news media star.

The protests are supposedly because Hillary won the popular vote, and thus she should have won the election.  That’s Not the way it works. See the video on the Electoral College. This is the fifth time in American history when the candidate who won the election lost the popular vote. Here’s historian John Steele Gordon:

The first time this happened was 1824. Then, there were four candidates. John Quincy Adams won 30.9 percent of the popular vote to Andrew Jackson’s 41.4 percent. But neither received a majority in the Electoral College, and the decision went to the House. The fourth candidate, eliminated from contention, was Henry Clay–the Speaker of the House and as wily a politician as this country has ever known. He threw his support to Adams, who was elected by the House. Adams then made Clay his secretary of state, a move that Jackson called a “corrupt bargain.” Four years later, Jackson clobbered Adams, winning 56 percent of the popular vote to 43.6 percent for Adams.

Do read the whole article, it’s not long, but the history is quite interesting. Here’s another.

The protests are something else, however. The pre-printed signs come from International A.N.S.W.E.R. They are advertising for ‘activists’ on Craig’s List, and will pay protesters $15 an hour.

Why Do We Have an “Electoral College”? Is It Fair? by The Elephant's Child

It’s about the time of year when people start complaining about the Electoral College, sure that it must be a bad thing.  Understanding how it works and why we have it is important. It’s a very American institution, and it really is a good thing. We have a lot to be grateful to the founders for.

Ask yourself just why we have a  Senate, with every state assigned two Senators. The House of Representatives represents the people and the population, The Senate represents the States, so that big populous states like California and New York have equal representation to the small state with fewer people. The Founders did a very impressive job of creating our Republic.

The Electoral College is based on the same principles. Since Hillary did very well in the popular vote, you will hear plenty of outcry from the Democrats, demanding that we do away with the Electoral College. This brief video from Prager University explains why that would be a very bad idea.

Newsweek Recalls 125,000 Copies of Its Souvenir Madam President Issue by The Elephant's Child

From Britain’s The Telegraph today. “Hillary Clinton signs a copy of Newsweek’s ‘Madam President’ commemorative magazine on November 7. They printed one for Donald Trump, too, just in case. The old photo of Harry Truman holding up the newspaper with the Dewey wins headline remains a caution to the press. Can’t help but enjoy it.

Dr. Tim Ball The Deliberate Corruption of Climate Science by The Elephant's Child

Mr. Trump is Getting Off to a Very Good Start! by The Elephant's Child

122712_cavuto_ebellOh Frabjous Day Callooh! Callay!* Donald Trump has selected Myron Ebell, director of the Center for Energy and Environment at the conservative Competitive Enterprise Institute who will spearhead Trump’s transition plans for the EPA and climate policy. An excellent pick!

Scientific American huffed:

Ebell is a well-known and polarizing figure in the energy and environment realm. His participation in the EPA transition signals that the Trump team is looking to drastically reshape the climate policies the agency has pursued under the Obama administration. Ebell’s role is likely to infuriate environmentalists and Democrats but buoy critics of Obama’s climate rules.

Ebell, who was dubbed an “elegant nerd” and a “policy wonk” by Vanity Fair, is known for his prolific writings that question what he calls climate change “alarmism.” He appears frequently in the media and before Congress. He’s also chairman of the Cooler Heads Coalition, a group of nonprofits that “question global warming alarmism and oppose energy-rationing policies.”

Ebell appears to relish criticism from the left.

The climate policy of the Left has never been about climate. They have created a noxious hysteria about man’s role in climate which is more myth than reality, with the general aim of using climate panic to destroy capitalism and bring on a new world order. See the post by Dr. Fred Goldberg below. Myron Ebell is not a “climate denier” nobody denies climate, a silly accusation. Just another of the insults and accusations flung about by the Left, who really hate being disagreed with.

We have spent billions and engaged in all sorts of silly schemes in a futile attempt to change the climate, which is controlled by the actions of the sun. Good appointment. Can we hope that the EPA will join the list of once-useful agencies that have been disbanded?

“The Great Liberal Freakout” by The Elephant's Child

Steven Hayward posted this review of “The Great Liberal Freakout” at Powerline yesterday. It’s so good it’s worth repeating.

The head of the Joint Center for Political Studies, which the Washington Post describes as a “respected liberal think tank,” reacted to Trump’s landslide thus: “When you consider that in the climate we’re in—rising violence, the Ku Klux Klan—it is exceedingly frightening.” Castro, still with us, said right before the election: “We sometimes have the feeling that we are living in the time preceding the election of Adolf Hitler as Chancellor of Germany.”  Claremont College professor John Roth wrote: “I could not help remembering how economic turmoil had conspired with Nazi nationalism and militarism—all intensified by Germany’s defeat in World War I—to send the world reeling into catastrophe… It is not entirely mistaken to contemplate our post-election state with fear and trembling.”  Esquire writer Harry Stein says that the voters who supported Trump were like the “good Germans” in “Hitler’s Germany.”  Sociologist Alan Wolfe is up in the New Left Review: “The worst nightmares of the American left appear to have come true.” And he doubles down in The Nation: “[T]he United States has embarked on a course so deeply reactionary, so negative and mean-spirited, so chauvinistic and self-deceptive that our times may soon rival the McCarthy era.” The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, keeper of the “Doomsday Clock” that purported to judge the risk of nuclear annihilation, has moved the hands on the clock from seven to four minutes before midnight.

Oh wait, did I say this was the reaction to Trump??  Sorry—these are what the left was saying the day after Ronald Reagan’s election in 1980. Some things never change.

“It’s a Republic If You Can Keep It” by The Elephant's Child

seful

elephant-sized-770x415xtThe pollsters and ballot analysts have a lot to answer for. To accomplish their ends, they separate the American people into a wide variety of pigeonholes—the working class, college-educated women, the rich, illegal immigrants, felons, residents of the inner-cities, millennials, aging baby-boomers. As if separating people into groups tells you, not just how people will vote, but who they are and what their issues are. Because those labels are broadcast over and over, there is the assumption that some important knowledge about the people has been portrayed. Not so.

People are individuals, and human nature doesn’t fit nicely into slots. The Left’s constant drive is for “diversity”which is their bow to people of different races. The Media latches on to convenient tags, without giving much thought to whether or not the tags actually fit anything. Human beings are tribal, it’s how we are made. We form little tribes of those who share the same interests and ideas, and we may belong to several distinct and different tribes. The Left rejects that idea, and wants to realign us into groups and neighborhoods that conform more closely to their ideas of what is proper. Colleges put in all sorts of affirmative action programs, try to reorganize people into more correct groups, and then cannot understand why all the black students sit at the same table in the student union.  It is not, by the way, racism.

The Left always claims that Republicans collectively and individually are “Racist.”Anyone with the slightest smattering of history knows this to be absurd, but apparently far too many Americans have little historic knowledge.

College educated women were going for Hillary in a big way, we were told. I’m a college educated woman, and I certainly felt no compulsion to vote for Hillary Clinton, nor did any of my friends who are also college educated women. We’re pretty well informed as to what Hillary has been up to for the past 30 years, and reject her categorically as being unqualified for the job.

There’s a big difference between being anti illegal immigration, and being anti-immigration. We welcome immigrants but want them to apply and get in line. It’s hardly fair for those who have applied and have been on the waiting list for years, when the president forbids the Border Patrol from preventing anyone from crossing the border, and invites state officials to register them to vote.

Why should anyone be angry? Isn’t the jobs report improving all the time? 14.8 million  private sector jobs have been created since February 2010.  Obama brags about that. But the population grew by 16.4 million. Labor force participation ticked upward at 62.7%, but when the recession ended in June 2009 — 65.7 % of the adult population was in the labor force. Some improvement!

There are 94,539 people not in the labor force as of October 2016,who have looked for a job in the past 12 months, but have more or less given up.

Here’s a study from last year. Employees of the federal government earn far more than their counterparts in the private sector, according to a study by the Cato Institute.

The study found that federal government workers earned an average of $84,153 in 2014 compared to the private sector’s average of $56, 350. Cato based its findings on figures from the U  S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. (BEA)

But when adding in benefits pay for federal workers, the difference becomes more dramatic. Federal employees made $119,934 in total compensation last year, while private sector workers earned $67,246, a difference of over $52,000, or 78 percent.

Add to that a link to a program from UC San Diego that is a guide to U.S. Government Acronyms and Abbreviations. Click on a letter, any letter. Yes, that is how bloated our federal government has become. Not quite what the founders envisioned.

There is talk of bigotry, nationalism, globalism, misogyny, and populism among other epithets flung around. But they are missing the point entirely. I may have voted against Hillary. Others voted against political correctness, many more at the eight-year long recession that just never seemed to recover. The labels don’t even begin to cover it. The media too often forgets that the convenient labels they find so useful in meeting a deadline— sway opinion, damage real people with real concerns. We are real people out here. The newly elected president is an ordinary flawed human being, as is the current president. They will make mistakes, they always do.

It remains a Republic, if we can keep it.

I had intended to write several pieces today. Lord knows there’s a lot to write about, but I have been plagued for most of the day with an overactive mouse. The cursor simply will not behave. It will not go to the intended spot, it will not narrow a page, or allow me to correct a mistake. In the last few minutes, it has finally decided to behave. It is a complete mystery to me. Any ideas?
