The Always Quotable Dr. Thomas Sowell by The Elephant's Child

Economist Mark J. Perry featured a quote from Thomas Sowell’s 2012 column “Socialist or Fascist?” in his Carpe Diem column at AEI.

“What socialism, fascism and other ideologies of the left have in common is an assumption that some very wise people – like themselves – need to take decisions out of the hands of lesser people, like the rest of us, and impose those decisions by government fiat.”

And here’s another:

“The left’s vision is not only a vision of the world, but also a vision of themselves, as superior beings pursuing superior ends. The self-flattery of the vision of the left also gives its true believers a huge ego stake in that vision which means that mere facts are unlikely to make them reconsider, regardless of what evidence piles up against the vision of the left, and regardless of its disastrous consequences.

Only our own awareness of the huge stakes involved can save us from the rampaging presumptions of our betters, whether they are called socialists or fascists. So long as we buy their heady rhetoric, we are selling our birthright of freedom.”

Identity Politics Is A Huge Threat to Our Country by The Elephant's Child

I ran into this article on “Identity politics” and with all the terminology thrown around today, I realized I was not really sure what was meant by the term. so I looked it up. The formal definition is here. Powerline linked to a Heritage Foundation panel on the problem which I found completely fascinating. It’s  sharp look at what is going on in our world today, by several of the sharpest minds out there, who all consider this real problem but differently. Each of the panelists had 10 minutes, which they over ran, but the proposed time limit kept it shorter than it might have otherwise been. I think most of us are somewhat aware that we are hovering around the edges of a political civil war. It’s getting increasingly angry out there:

If you are going to solve a problem, you have to understand what it is first. There is a deep lack of understanding of ordinary human nature. Life is hard, you will make mistakes. You enjoy being with people who share your interests, whether it’s a knitting circle, or watching a football game. Selecting such a group is not prejudice against some other group or sexual identity. More women are apt to be interested in knitting, and more men are apt to care about a football game. Human nature.

Alexandria Occassionally-Cogent Says We’re All Going to Die in 5 Years If We Don’t Do Something Right Now. by The Elephant's Child

The climate of the Earth has been warming and cooling for millions of years.

THE MORE RECENT CLIMATE TIMELINE

120,000 – 110,000 Years Ago – The Eemian interglacial
100,000 Years Ago – A fairly sudden shift to cold glacial conditions over ∼ 400 years ∼or less. Northern forests retreat – ice sheets take over.

60,000 – 55.000 years between – partial melted glaciers
14,000 years ago – Sudden warming raising temperatures to present levels.
12,500 years ago – Younger Dryas after 1,500 years of recovery from ice age    1000 years of ice age.
12,500 years ago – Present interglacial – Holocene
9,000 to 5,000 years ago – Climate Optimum
2,800 years ago – cooling event, wet conditions

1,500 year cycle – through 1 million years 1,500 year warm-cold cycle superimposed over longer, stronger, ice ages and interglacials.

Roy Spencer, PhD is a Principal Research Scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville where he and Dr. John Christy monitor the global temperature with satellites. He has provided congressional testimony several times on the subject of global warming. The link just above provides a short explanation of global warming — do read the whole thing, you’ll understand a lot more, and know what is nonsense, which you will hear a lot of.

His website is www.drroyspencer.com   Lots of good information there, you might want to save the link..

I am most definitely not a climate scientist, but I grew up very rural in what you might think of as the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, somewhere around 5000′ elevation, with woods and a river, and in winter, a fabulous sledding hill, and I’ve been snowed in. So I spent my time outdoors. Significantly different than an urban apartment dweller, even those who profess fondness for nature and the outdoors. A flood took out 5 of our buildings, had  lightning strike a tree close to the house, (big noise), killed a rattlesnake, and I’m a pretty fair shot with woodrats. I’ve heard cougars scream, and run down to the river to catch a trout for breakfast. So I’m not impressed with folks marching or running around in polar bear suits.

A Song of Patriotic Prejudice by The Elephant's Child

The rottenest bits of these islands of ours
We’ve left in the hands of three unfriendly powers.
Examine your Irishman, Welshman or Scot
You’ll find he’s a stinker as likely as not

The English the English are best
I wouldn’t give tuppence for all of the rest

The Scotsman is mean as we’re all well aware
And bony and blotchy and covered with hair,
He eats salty porridge, he works all the day
And he hasn’t got Bishops to show him the way

The English are noble, the English are nice
And worth any other at double the price

And crossing the Channel one cannot say much
For the French or the Spanish. the Danish. or Dutch
The Germans are German, the Russians are Red
And the Greeks and Italians eat garlic in bed

The English are moral, the English are good
And clever and modest and misunderstood

The American Media Are Not Living Up to Their Own Standards by The Elephant's Child

The Media is trying hard to make a really dreadful event out of the Border Control using tear-gas on the “caravan” at the border who tried to rush the border and started throwing rocks and bottles at the Border Control Police. Members of the Border Patrol are allowed to defend themselves, and rocks and bottles can be very serious indeed. One Border Control member was killed just that way, not in the current melee.

It would be nice if the media could just report the news accurately instead of trying to spread Leftist propaganda of poor pathetic little children getting tear-gassed. The woman with two barefoot little kids was proved to be a plant for the cameras, And once again, Jim Acosta was proved not to know what he was talking about. If you recall, he tried to correct President Trump when the president said the caravans were an “invading force”, Acosta insisted they were only a poor pathetic group of unfortunates applying for amnesty.  Well, 8,500 young men of military age rushing the border with rocks and bottles thrown can clearly be described as an invading force. And there are yet two more caravans on the way. They are not eligible for any kind of amnesty.

The Leftist media pay no attention to what has been reported. We were told, by Caravan spokesmen that they did not want amnesty, and knew they would not get it anyway, they just wanted jobs. That was repeated several times, but it didn’t fit with the Left’s preferred story line, nor with their goal of getting more illegals in to be counted in the 2020 census.

If this first group is accurately numbered at 8,500, there are two more caravans yet to arrive, and we don’t know the body count for them, but it’s probably similar. We certainly haven’t heard anyone talking about how much smaller the two following groups are. The Mexicans are fed up with them and are deporting them as fast as they can.  Seven out of ten Mexicans are opposed to the caravans. The citizens of Tijuana are furious at the massive intrusion, and are demanding help from the Mexican government as their own police try to deal with them.

Obama repeatedly dealt with migrant caravans with pepper spray and tear gas, over 30 times, but the Left is unable to criticize their own. Their entire purpose is to defame the current President of the United States, and they will try anything that promises success in defaming or displacing him.

DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen Explains the Border Crisis by The Elephant's Child

Kirsten Nielsen DHS

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen posted the following on DHS’s Facebook page “regarding the recent crisis on our southern border:”

Given the activities of the last 24 hours at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, I want to provide an update on what occurred and attempt to dispel many of the rumors and much of the misinformation circulating.

First, the violence we saw at the border was entirely predictable. This caravan, unlike previous caravans, had already entered #Mexico violently and attacked border police in two other countries. I refuse to believe that anyone honestly maintains that attacking law enforcement with rocks and projectiles is acceptable. It is shocking that I have to explain this, but officers can be seriously or fatally injured in such attacks. Self-defense isn’t debatable for most law-abiding Americans.

Second, the caravan is far larger and more organized than previous ones. There are 8,500 caravan members in Tijuana and Mexicali. There are reports of additional caravans on their way.

Third, the overwhelming majority of these individuals are not eligible for asylum in the United States under our laws. Historically, less than 10% of those who claim asylum from #Guatemala, #Honduras, and #ElSalvador are found eligible by a federal judge. 90% are not eligible. Most of these migrants are seeking jobs or to join family who are already in the U.S. They have all refused multiple opportunities to seek protection in Mexico or with the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. Seeking employment or family reunification are not grounds for asylum under our laws, or any international obligation. There are, however, legal ways to seek a job or to be reunited in the U.S.

Fourth, the caravan members are predominately male. It appears in some cases that the limited number of women and children in the caravan are being used by the organizers as “human shields” when they confront law enforcement. They are being put at risk by the caravan organizers as we saw at the Mexico-Guatemala border. This is putting vulnerable people in harms way.

Fifth, we cannot confirm the backgrounds and identities of all caravan members which possess a national security and public safety risk to our country. However, at this point we have confirmed that there are over 600 convicted criminals traveling with the caravan flow. This includes individuals known to law enforcement for assault, battery, drug crimes, burglary, rape, child abuse and more. This is serious. Additionally, Mexico has already arrested 100 caravan members for criminal violations in Mexico.

Sixth, our Border Patrol agents and officers responded admirably and responsibly to the events on Sunday. It is a testament to their training and professionalism that no one was injured. The accepted use of nonlethal force (also used by the Obama Administration in 2013) prevented further injury to agents and a mass illegal rush across the border. We will not shy away from protecting our people. I ask parents to avoid violent caravan groups and refrain from attempts to illegally enter our country – these acts will put your children in danger.

Seventh, I want to thank President Donald J. Trump again for the decision to send @DeptofDefense to the border to bolster our ports of entry and provide force protection for Customs and Border Protection. This decision likely prevented injuries to personnel and migrants or additional damage to property. Instead of “a political stunt,” as suggested by some, this was in fact the act of a leader concerned about the rule of law.

Eighth, this Administration has been working nonstop to fix our immigration system to address the crisis at the border. We have proposed legislation and asked Congress to pass it. The President has repeatedly made clear what is needed to secure our border and negotiated in good faith. It is time for Congress to do its job. Absent Congressional action courts have misinterpreted existing laws and have made the job of law enforcement far more difficult. But the men and women of DHS will continue to do all we can to enforce the law and DHS and U.S. Department of State will continue negotiations with Mexico and our other partners in the region. We are optimistic that cross border collaboration can help make America, indeed the entire region, more secure.

Finally, this Administration warned about the danger of the caravan. We predicted the violence we saw on Sunday. We prepared to address it with additional personnel and DOD deployments. We will continue to prepare for the next assault while looking for lasting solutions with Congress and our Mexican partners. As always, I want to thank those officers and agents in San Ysidro who, under tremendous strain, used professionalism and restraint to ensure that no one was injured as they were attacked themselves. I also thank DOD and our state & local law enforcement who were on scene to support our people.
