Nancy Pelosi Expects To Once Again Be Speaker, Shortly! by The Elephant's Child

Nancy Pelosi has announced that she will revive the “Select Committee on Climate Change that was disbanded when the GOP took over Congress in 2010. The radical justice Democrats  are pushing for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to be a member, but Pelosi slyly refused to give the committee subpoena power and is preventing it from writing any legislation.

She also named Rep. Kathy Castor as chair. Castor is not a member of the Progressive Caucus and has actually accepted donations from (gasp) fossil fuel companies. The Justice Democrats have insisted that only those members who did not accept donations from energy companies be allowed to join the committee.

Pelosi said, when appointing Castor as chair:

“She will bring great experience, energy and urgency to the existential threat of the climate crisis. This committee will be critical to the entire Congress’s mission to respond to the urgency of this threat, while creating the good-paying, green jobs of the future. “

That didn’t go over well with the Justice Democrats who promptly issued a press release questioning the commitment of Pelosi and the Democrat leadership.

It’s extremely disappointing that the current proposal may be even weaker than Pelosi’s previous Select Committee on climate in 2007.  Democratic leadership still has time to create a Select Committee on a Green New Deal and support a serious proposal that holds fossil fuel billionaires accountable and is based on what science demands.

The party of the resistance can’t take the path of least resistance on climate and inequality.

Democrats will automatically support anything with “New Deal” in the wording. They still worship FDR.

Ocasio-Cortez has received an extraordinary amount of media attention, which I think Democrats are interpreting as support. They may come to regret that. Conservatives get a kick out of the way that every time she opens her mouth, the stupidity flows out. Chris Buskirk of American Greatness wrote a recent piece suggesting that she is not stupid at all, it’s just that most everything she believes is just plain wrong, and of course it is.

The climate folk never seem to do their homework. By that I mean they do not study up on the qualifications of the scientists, what they are actually saying, they just accept the latest buzz-words, and call the people who suggest they are mistaken “Deniers” and other bad words. Surely you have noticed that you are not allowed to disagree with a Democrat.

I think it was Jerry Brown who just pontificated about climate alarmism being “settled science.” Sorry, science is never “settled.” It is subject to constant study and attempts to replicate others’ conclusions. Al Gore went on at great length about the rising of the oceans, until he made a bundle with his alarmist movie, then he promptly bought an oceanside condominium on San Francisco Bay. Both tide gauge sea level and satellite altimetry show that the current amount of sea level change is about 3 millimeters a year, and that may be more because of land subsidence than actual sea level rise. Three millimeters is about the size of the lower-case letter ‘l’ in the awkwardly small type on this website.

Democrats are all excited about the Green New Deal, which is just socialism, but I repeat myself. They are so concerned about the horrors of carbon dioxide that they want to switch to renewables. Again, they haven’t done their homework. Wind is too intermittent to be a dependable source of energy, and solar energy is too diffuse, and there are clouds moving across the sky all the time. Occasio-Cortez thinks we have 5 years and we’re done for, and she expects New York to be underwater all too soon. So If she wants lots of new nuclear plants to be built, our society might not grind to a halt.

And then there’s the problem of where you get your science. Much of the current science comes not from observations of the real world, but from computer simulations in university labs. The problem is that there were a lot of things they didn’t have specific information for, so they put in estimates, and some intelligent guesswork, and a few assumptions, and so there you go.

I put a lot of emphasis on “doing your homework”– by that I mean that if you are going to be a citizen and a voter, you have an obligation to try hard to be informed. Doesn’t mean that we’re going to know it all, but we need to try – especially because Democrats feel no such obligation, and there are a lot of Ocasio-Cortez’s out there.

Why You Should Be a Nationalist by The Elephant's Child

French President Emanuelle Macron announced in a speech that nationalism was treason, and ignited a huge fuss in France with Frenchmen in yellow vests protesting and rioting and generally tearing the place apart. It’s not known how long he will survive as president.

Those who are greedy for more power may yearn for larger venues, a  world government may seem viable, but you have to learn to manage the smaller organizations first. If you have observed the European Union at work it’s obvious, if not, make the effort to do so.

80% of Americans Want Secure Borders by The Elephant's Child

Roughly 80% of all voters say that the United States needs secure borders, including 68% of Democrats, in a poll conducted by Harvard University.

The findings reveal, for example, that eight out of 10 of all U.S. voters — 79 percent — say the U.S. needs secure borders; 93 percent of Republicans, 80 percent of independents and 68 percent of Democrats agree with that.

Another 79 percent of voters overall say immigration priorities should be granted on a person’s “ability to contribute to America”; 87 percent of Republicans, 79 percent of independents and 72 percent of Democrats agree.

Meanwhile, 68 percent overall oppose a lottery-based immigration system which is meant to ensure “greater diversity”: in the U.S.; 78 percent of Republicans, 65 percent of independents and 62 percent of Democrats agree.

In addition, 61 percent overall say U.S. border security is inadequate; 84 percent of Republicans, 64 percent of independents and 40 percent of Democrats agree.

According to the most recent analysis by  the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), one illegal immigrant living in America today costs U.S. citizen taxpayers about $8,075. In total illegal aliens cost American taxpayers $116 billion annually. This number is predictably disputed by the media and the Democrats, but even using conservative estimates compiled five years ago, Heritage found that illegal immigrant households imposed a net fiscal burden of around $54.5 billion a year (benefits received minus taxes paid). The funding Trump is requesting  is about 10% of the annual cost of the amount taxpayers pay to provide services for illegal immigrants.

Democrats and the media continually complain that “walls don’t work” but even the slightest investigation proves them wrong on that one. Walls work every time. Doesn’t mean they are perfect, but they work well enough to significantly reduce the illegal population.

One of the most obvious objections to the Democrat’s current protestations, is that not long ago, when they were in charge, they were claiming the exact opposite position. See here, and here, and here. The Democrats’ position is entirely based, not on principle, but on resistance to anything Trump. As they occasionally admit, they don’t have any principles, only the propaganda of the moment handed down from their propaganda shop. Schumer and Pelosi inadvertently proved that with identical twitter posts.

“The New World Order” Rears it’s Ugly Head Once More by The Elephant's Child

merkel happy 4

Germany’s Angela Merkel has finally clarified the argument of our day. She has proclaimed that “nation states must today be prepared to give up their sovereignty.” She told an audience in Berlin that sovereign nation states must not listen to the will of their citizens when it comes to questions of immigration, borders, or even sovereignty.

In an orderly fashion of course,” Merkel joked, attempting to lighten the mood. But Merkel has always had a tin ear for comedy and she soon launched into a dark speech condemning those in her own party who think Germany should have listened to the will of its citizens and refused to sign the controversial UN migration pact:

There were [politicians] who believed that they could decide when these agreements are no longer valid because they are representing The People”.

[But] the people are individuals who are living in a country, they are not a group who define themselves as the [German] people,” she stressed.

She has apparently not noticed the reaction of the French people to President Emmanuel Macron’ Remembrance Day speech that “patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism [because] nationalism is treason.” That got the deeply unpopular Macron the whole of France broken out in riots by people in yellow jackets. Macron told the Bundestag that France and Germany should be at the center of the emerging New World Order.

What New World Order? A fairly short period when Germany has refrained from invading France? A European continent foolishly trying to absorb millions of Islamic migrants who, if they are true believers, believe that anyone not accepting the rule of Islam must be killed.  Angela Merkel is entirely responsible for the invasion of migrants, who will turn Europe Islamic within a few decades. High birthrates for the migrants low birthrate for the native Europeans.  The UN is a remarkably ineffective organization. Families can’t even get along. Why do people keep coming up with this idea of a new world order? Not going to happen. But then one might ask why we have such a hard time selling free market capitalism to other countries? The general secretary of the IPCC has stated that their aim is to remove the threat of capitalism from the world without any understanding of the role of free market capitalism in raising the wealth and well-being of its people. Seems to be located in the part of the brain of those in power, that is confident that all would be well if the rest of the world would just do what they recommend.

Angela Merkel is retiring, but turning things over to another woman who shares her ideas. We’ll see how that works out. At least they aren’t up for invading France again at present.

Border Wall, Democrats, Illegals, Migrants, and Why It’s a Problem by The Elephant's Child

Victor Davis Hanson took on the Democrat rejection of a border wall under the headline “Dems Hate The Border Wall Because They Know It Will Work.”

There was likely never going to be “comprehensive immigration reform” or any deal amnestying the DACA recipients in exchange for building the wall. Democrats in the present political landscape will not consent to a wall. For them, a successful border wall is now considered bad politics in almost every manner imaginable.

Yet 12 years ago, Congress, with broad bipartisan support, passed the Security Fence of Act of 2006. The bill was signed into law by then-President George W. Bush to overwhelming public applause. The stopgap legislation led to some 650 miles of a mostly inexpensive steel fence while still leaving about two-thirds of the 1,950-mile border unfenced.

The Center for Immigration Studies explains the way illegal’s travel is facilitated by official government policy in Costa Rica and Panama. When they have made their way through the Darien Gap jungle, the migrants turn themselves in to the Panamanian military police. The police register them and get them to government camps for food, medicine and rest. Then with Western Union money transfers, the government gives them permits to legally be in-country long enough to leave the country heading North. Costa Rican repeat the catch, rest and release, and send them on to the Nicaraguan border.

Then you have all the tech companies who want lots of H-1B workers imported because they are cheaper than our own tech graduates, and can’t afford to complain. If you can find anyone who is thinking primarily of the good of the country, let me know. The majority of our Hispanic citizens, according to polls, favored sending the DACA kids back home. The current problem has nothing to do with our immigrant ancestors, the placque on the base of the Statue of Liberty, CIS also has interviews with migrants in Costa Rica from Iran. Bangladesh, and Pakistan all en route to the U.S. Border. This is all far more complicated than most of us recognize.

American Life Expectancy Has Declined for the Third Year in a Row by The Elephant's Child

he Center for Disease Control and Prevention just revealed that American life expectancy has declined for the third year in a roll. The last time that happened was at the end of the first World War and the huge flu pandemic. The reason is clear – drug overdoses, and suicide. Last year 70,000 Americans died of a drug overdose.

This is double that of Canada, relative to population, and three times the rate in England and Wales. The health care system, on the other hand, works. The number one killer in the United States for decades has been heart disease. Between 2000 and 2017 the death rate from heart disease has dropped by more than 35%, and last year there were 63,000 fewer deaths from heart disease than in 2,000, and one-third the rate in 1969. I should note that if you take the suicide and drug overdoses out of the tabulation, life expectancy is back to increasing slowly. This is a lesson in how statistics can be deceiving.

The United States has also made tremendous gains against cancer, the second-most prolific killer of Americans. From 2016 to 2017, the overall mortality rate from cancer declined 2.1%. And since its peak in 1991, the U.S. cancer death rate has fallen nearly 30%.

Cancer kills more people, as a share of the population, in other countries. Canada’s cancer mortality rate is 198 deaths per 100,000 people — 30% higher than the corresponding rate in the United States. The United Kingdom’s cancer death rate is 80% higher than in the United States.

Socialized medicine does much worse. The government-run systems in Canada and Britain are not able to serve the needs of their patients. In England, 28,000 patients whose doctors referred them urgently to a hospital had to wait more than two months to start treatment. Almost 11,000 of those patients had to wait more than three months. In the U.S. 45 drugs for cancer have been approved between 2009 and 2013, Canada’ health care system covered just 13. Don’t let anyone sell you on Single-Payer Health Care.

There aren’t many things that are better done by a large bureaucracy. Health Care is not one of them. When a bureaucracy does it, cost becomes the major factor, and cutting costs ranks higher than anything individual. The other thing to take away from those statistics is the urgency of drastically cutting the flow of drugs into the country.

COP24: Climate Crisis Not Accepted. Lack of Scientific Rigor! by The Elephant's Child

oceanwater

Paul Driessen, a senior policy adviser for CFact, wrote at wattsupwiththat:

The 30,000 alarmists gathered in Katowice, Poland expected to slam-dunk their report proclaiming a planet-threatening climate crisis, finalize rules for implementing the Paris accords, redistribute infinite billions of dollars from industrialized nations to “climate victim” countries, and solidify their control over people’s energy, jobs, living standards and liberties. It didn’t work out quite that way.

They got blindsided by millions of French citizens angrily denouncing their government’s plans to carbon-tax them into worse poverty and joblessness. They were furious that the US exhibit profiled the benefits of fossil fuels – and outraged that the United States, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait were willing to “note” the climate report and express appreciation to the scientists who developed it, but not to “welcome” it or “accept” its assertions about climate cataclysms and the need to slash fossil fuel use.

The UN’s IPCC’s Special Report on 1.5º C. was not welcomed at COP24, but subject to significant controversy for its lack of scientific rigor. Anthony Watts remarked  a while back that 1.2º C – 2.2º C is the warming one could expect on most spring days between 10 am and noon.

Economist Stephen Moore commented at Investor’s Business Daily that “The first iron rule of American politics is: Follow the money. This explains about 80% of what goes on in Washington. He added that one reason so many hundreds of scientists are persuaded that the sky is falling is that they are paid handsomely to do so.”

I said, “In America and around the globe governments have created a multibillion-dollar climate change industrial complex.” And then I added: “A lot of people are getting really, really rich off of the climate change industry.” According to a recent report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office, “Federal funding for climate change research, technology, international assistance, and adaptation has increased from $2.4 billion in 1993 to $11.6 billion in 2014, with an additional $26.1 billion for climate change programs and activities provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in 2009.”

This is not meant to suggest that climate scientists are dishonest, but only that federal grants have become available and computers and labs enhanced, sometimes even with assistants – for those who are studying climate science. and a lot more professors are studying climate science.

Right now we seem to be in a cooling phase, as the sun has fewer sunspots. Our sun does have some influence on climate, as does CO² – carbon dioxide, what we exhale (and a natural fertilizer for plants), not carbon, which is a solid. Other things we don’t understand well are the effect of water vapor (or clouds) in the atmosphere, and the effect of the warming and cooling in the movement of ocean currents.

Some people want to believe in catastrophe, the “true believers”, who simply believe and are sure we must do something right now or we’re all gonna die. See the microphone loving Alexandria Occasio-Cortez and her push for a “green new deal.”

Part of the problem in understanding is that a lot of the folks studying climate believed that they could put the climate into a computer program and play out various scenarios and get real answers about future warming like stock market people did in forecasting what the financial markets would do.  You have probably noticed that in the last week or so. We had thermometers stationed all over our country, but we learned that they were situated next to air-conditioner exhausts, or the reflective heat from concrete walls or airport runways, and were totally unreliable evidence of temperature.

Al Gore is not an expert, even if he made a movie and got rich. The Heritage Foundation just noted that he had hailed the city of Georgetown, Texas for powering itself with only wind and solar energy, and now the city is losing millions on it’s green energy gamble. Their bet against fossil fuel prices cost the city-owned utility nearly $7 million and the city is trying to find a way out of their long term contracts.

The problem with wind and solar is not in the turbines or the solar cells, but in the wind and the sunshine. Wind is intermittent. It does not blow steadily. That is the nature of wind, not something that can be fixed. Sunlight is diffuse at best. Clouds. There are days and days here in the Northwest when it rains, or is just cloudy. The rain can be predicted, sometimes, but clouds can’t. They re constantly moving. What that means is that wind and solar have to have constant backup with conventional power from hydropower or fossil fuel powered power plants, or nuclear energy. Our society requires massive amounts of energy, or perhaps you want your heart surgery to stop halfway through because the wind stopped blowing.  It’s a little more complicated than the young Ms. Ocasio-Cortez understands.

Tucker Carlson Takes a Look at Trump Derangement by The Elephant's Child

I suspect most of us have marveled at the strange and vicious Leftist reaction to the election of President Trump. Yes, of course they all believed that Hillary would be elected, and they would remain in power. Barack Obama had been the first black president, which was a great feather in their caps, and Hillary would be the first woman president. It has seemed that they are not all that much interested in policy, as they are interested in the “first black president” part, which absolves them of any notion of racial prejudice now or in the past, and proves, once again, that they are good people.

Put baldly like that, it seems remarkably nutty, but a striking number of serious thinkers believe that Leftist politics is all about feelings. (Think about the outcry about “children in cages”and “little children ripped from the arms of their mothers”, the “sanctuary cities” movement). It is not about good policy, but about what makes them feel good. They actually seem uninterested in policy.

Tucker Carlson delivered a monologue on the cost of the “Russia fixation.” “So there’s been a cost to our Russia fixation, a massive one,” Carlson said. “Years later we’ll look back and wonder what happened. How did everyone in America with an Ivy League education go insane in a single year? Was there some kind of mass poisoning? Ergotism? Historians will sort it out.”

“For now, all we know that the people in charge have lost it,” Carlson declared. “Listen to them explain the intricacies of the Russia conspiracy. They’re mesmerized. It’s a tale so complex and riddled with internal contradictions, it sounds like eastern religion. Only they really understand it. To them, Russia is the touchstone. It’s the comprehensive theory of everything.”

We’ve called it “Trump Derangement Syndrome” but the Democrats have  long reacted badly to losing an election, or an argument. They have been fixated on the Russian investigation, and the chance of impeaching Trump over it.  Flynn was the first target of the Mueller investigation. The hunt for Russian spies on our soil has metastasized – there are now 17 separate Russia investigations being conducted by the Justice Department, not counting 4 Congressional inquiries. The Russians, we have learned, spent a total of $4,700 on Google ads during the presidential campaign. That doesn’t buy much.

Tucker Carlson points out what happened last night on cable news, on MSNBC, the most serious news program that NBC offers on cable. The two people concerned are a man named Malcolm Nance, who identifies himself as a 35-year veteran of counter-intelligence work,(?) and his most recent book which was heavily promoted by MSNBC, is The Plot to Hack America. The other man is Brian Williams, the anchor of the NBC Nightly News. Williams is highly respected in the news business. He opens the segment by explaining that Russian “disinformation teams” have been working to divide America and convince the population that James Comey and Robert Mueller might have political agendas.

This is all completely insane. The John Birch Society? The KKK? The Christian Right (those religious people are dangerous), The Party of conspiracy theories? Steve Bannon? David Duke? Far-right conspiracy theories to suppress the African American vote? So much for Brian Williams being a respected newsman. The Left hauls these tiresome themes out of their emergency file for accusing Republicans when other accusations fail.

You’ve heard Hillary and her “basket of deplorables” and assumption that the people in the wasteland between the more intelligent coastal cities are obviously a bunch of uneducated dummies. So anyone who disagrees with them is a tool of a foreign power? You probably remember times in the past when they’ve hauled out theories of encampments of dangerous far-right, armed gun nuts ready to break out of the woods of Northern Idaho or Northern Louisiana to…..what? The KKK always seems to be lurking, but they seem remarkably few in number.

The Left expects to be in charge. They choose their candidates by race, skin color, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, not by the value of their ideas. Hillary was interesting as the first woman president, but when she lost, they lost interest. Kamala Harris has the quality of not only being part black, but being a woman as well. Elizabeth Warren was interesting as a woman who was part Native American, but after the DNA test, Democrats lost interest. And then there’s “Beto” O’Rourke. He has something of an all-American boy look, like John Kennedy, and a nice smile, but if he has any ideas, I haven’t heard what they might be.

We should be looking for ideas and policy, what’s good for the country, but what they’re interested in is looks and personality, not qualifications. Do read the whole thing and watch the short video, and puzzle over the obsession with Russia.

Trump Derangement Syndrome and How It Works by The Elephant's Child

static.politico.com

Republicans are not usually inclined to take part in demonstrations or marches, to carry political signs, that sort of thing. Instead they are apt to search for more information, maybe write their congressperson, and if they really get irritated, they might go to one of the congressperson’s public meetings. If it turns out that they are represented by a Democrat, they are apt to make sure all of their family votes the next time, and they might even put a sign in their yard. We did have the Tea-Party movement, but the percentage of Republicans inclined to protest is small. Democrats depend on that. Because they are a party dependent on feelings rather than information, marching or waving signs contributes to their sense of well-being, they are being “good people.”

Hollywood celebrities, who are famous for being known, depend on continuing to be known by getting their names in the media as often as possible, hopefully for something important rather than the usual Hollywood scandal.  Someone named Judd Apatow, who apparently has directed a movie, has called for advertisers to stop advertising on the Tucker Carlson Tonight show by threatening, intimidating or bullying them. The idea is to silence conservative voices online or on the radio or television. The Left, usually ill-informed, is deeply afraid of people who actually know what they are talking about. They are very sensitive to being laughed at.

The Constitution’s First Amendment prohibits Congress from making a law abridging the freedom of speech, a direction to Congress, not to Hollywood celebrities who are free to voice any inane ideas they may have. On slow days, celebrities are apt to get more attention if they say something vaguely interesting. Way too much of any day’s news is the words of celebrities, the more provacative the better. In reaction to that, millions of ordinary people have lost interest in patronizing movies, the NFL has had a season of empty stadium seats, and viewers of some television shows have turned to something else instead.

Advertising is expensive, placement on a popular show means more people see your ad. Advertisers are always deeply worried about the effectiveness of their ads. Will lots of people see them, will the ad increase sales. paying for itself, or will the executive get in trouble for an ad that does not work? So advertisers are sensitive to any kind of boycott.  Doesn’t always work as expected. Dick’s Sporting Goods attempted to be sensitive to the gun-banning people, and their sales have tanked. The people didn’t go for football players “taking a knee” instead of respecting the national anthem, and the NFL has had masses of empty seats all year. Hollywood movies are losing money. Big companies used to understand that although nobody cared how they personally voted, their public face was firmly non-political. Newer, younger companies have not learned that lesson, and the Silicon Valley folk do not grasp their own predicament. They have even used the Southern Poverty Law Center (the biggest hate group in the country) as their fact-checker, and are attempting to be helpful to Chinese efforts to control their own citizens ever more completely.

If you watch the way the Communist Chinese government is attempting to control their own citizens with constant computer monitoring, consider that your conversations on social media are being monitored and recorded, that your conversations at home can be monitored with all the new Alexa-type devices, does it make you a little nervous? They reportedly want your DNA. Have you noticed that the Democrat media is trying to talk us into a recession? Just asking.

Did you know that the Mueller probe, the ‘special counsel investigation’ has so far cost the taxpayers $25.2 million? That’s $4.5 million for salaries and rent, $3.9 million from the Department of Justice, $2,686,270 for personnel compensation and benefits and another $1 million for special counsel office employees. $580,098 on travel and transportation, and $779 on the “transportation of things”. There’s more, $25,215,852 worth, but you get the idea. Has it accomplished anything at all, except to demonstrate the irresponsibility and malfeasance of our representatives in Washington D.C.?

It’s Time for Republicans to Start Being Activists! by The Elephant's Child

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) in a press conference today, said that “the White House would need Congressional approval to get wall funding from another part of the government, and they will not get that approval.”

Schumer said he received an offer from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) for $1.6 billion for border security plus a $1 billion “slush fund for the president to use for his radical immigration agenda.” Schumer added that he told McConnell he wouldn’t accept the slush fund.

Schumer further stated, “And as for the idea of what [Sarah Huckabee Sanders] said, they could get wall money from NAFTA or some other part of the government, they need Congressional approval. They’re not getting it for the wall, plain and simple.”

Radical Immigration Agenda” indeed. We are not allowed to be a sovereign nation? We have to let in all the illegal aliens who have previously been deported for the crimes they have committed? Some come back multiple times. We are on to the Democrat agenda. They want more bodies for the 2020 census to increase the numbers of representatives for New York, in Schumer’s case, and the rest of the states. They want more taxpayers money to pay for the welfare and medical care we give to illegal aliens. The heroin and fentanyl that flow over our southern border destroying American lives.  They want illegal aliens to vote.

I would suggest that every time Senator Schumer’s name is mentioned, someone attach a list of the murders, attacks, drug deaths, children attacked, sex trafficking, deaths of illegals abandoned by coyotes, every single result of the failure to secure the southern border. Post pictures of the senator posted with the list of the results of his stupidity. Call his district offices. Call your senators and explain why you want a wall. For phone numbers go to senate.org.

Walls work. Not perfectly, but they help immeasurably. A while back, The Center for Immigration Studies (cis.org) calculated that a wall would pay for itself in the reduced welfare costs and policing costs imposed by illegal aliens. I don’t know if that is true for the walls designed for President Trump, but illegals impose huge costs on taxpayers, the flow of drugs must be stopped, and there are huge costs there as well.
