American Elephants

There’s An Important Lesson Here for Us All. by The Elephant's Child

A couple of articles I read today demonstrated an unusual connection. The first was a post at PJ Media titled “The Remarkable Donald Trump” by Michael Busler.

Years from now, history will note a major event that occurred in 2016. An event that significantly altered the course of the country and the world. At the time, the U.S. was in, what turned out to be, the last year of a 10-year economic slump. It was, in fact, the only 10-year period in history where the economy did not achieve 3% annual growth in any year.

From 2006 to 2016 economic growth averaged about 2%. That subpar growth rate led to fewer opportunities for Americans. That led to poor employment prospects and stagnant wages. There were many people who had absolutely no opportunity. That led to resentment. …

Many Americans began to place security above freedom. They wanted the government to pay for their healthcare, their higher education, their basic income, and even their housing. Of course, the government gets the money by taxing income earners.

If implemented, those spend-and-tax government actions would permanently slow economic growth. The reason is very simple. All of these income transfer programs take income away from people who earned it and give it to people who, for whatever reason, have not earned it. That means income earners have less incentive to earn and income receivers have no incentive to earn.

The second post was from The Daily Caller, by Amber Athley, titled: “Biden’s First Move As President? Kill the Trump Tax Cuts.”

Former Vice President Joe Biden said Monday that his first order of business if he is elected president is to repeal the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

Biden made the remark in Washington, D.C. during the Poor People’s Campaign Presidential Forum at Trinity Washington University. The event features low-income Americans asking questions of ten Democratic presidential candidates, including Biden, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

After one attendee asked Biden how he would combat the “lie of scarcity” regarding resources, Biden insisted there is “plenty of money” in the U.S. and vowed to obtain some of it through repealing tax cuts.

“Number one, we have the greatest income inequity in the history of the United States of America since 1902, and the fact of the matter is, there is plenty, plenty of money to go around,” Biden replied. “The first thing I would do as president is eliminate the president’s tax cut.”

That pretty much sums the whole thing up, doesn’t it?

The Stakes in the Battle for Hong Kong are High by The Elephant's Child

We normally have a number of readers from Hong Kong. We do have readers from all over the world, which always surprises me, though I welcome it enthusiastically. But our Hong Kong readers have apparently been out in the streets for the last three days, and they’re not through yet. Americans aren’t really much aware of what is going on in that part of the world. Here, Dr. Margaret Ng Ngoi-yee does a good job of explaining the issues.

You probably noticed when President Trump threatened Mexico with some significant tariffs if the didn’t make an effort to help out with the immigration crisis, the ever-so-responsible Media erupted with cries of “Trade Wars” and all the disaster to our people and our country if the despicable Trump was stupidly starting a trade war. Of course, he was not. He was giving the Mexicans a nudge, pointing out that they were creating a serious problem for us with their lax treatment of migrants, and that if they wanted to e stubborn about it, we had some consequences available that they would not like at all. Mexico promptly decided that being helpful was probably a good idea. Now the press is claiming that we are trying to start a Trade War with China, which is not true either.

And that really has not much of anything to do with the eruptions in Hong Kong. Claudia Rosett, splendid international reporter, does an excellent job of explaining the stakes.

In Hong Kong’s huge protest over a proposed law that would allow extradition from the territory to mainland China, there is far more at stake than “confidence” in the integrity of Hong Kong’s legal system, or the health of Hong Kong’s economy — important though those both are. The real showdown going on in Hong Kong has long been between despotism and democracy, between tyranny and the Free World. And whether we, the free people of America, and our allies, choose to think of it this way or not, the reality is that the showdown now taking place in Hong Kong will shape our future as well.

For two reasons, the people of Hong Kong — in their efforts to stop this ruinous extradition law — deserve the strongest support we can muster. One reason is quite simply that it is the right thing to do, though in international politics that is often a backseat priority. The other reason– perhaps more compelling to those inclined to think of Hong Kong as a faraway foreign place and none of our business — is that it is a high-risk precedent for the Free World to abandon its own. It invites aggression by the likes of China (and Russia, Iran, North Korea, etc.) against us and our allies. Which is what it will boil down to, if the U.S., the U.K. and other democratic powers do not find some way to buttress the demands of Hong Kong’s demonstrators. It is vital that Washington persuade Beijing and its satrap in Hong Kong, Chief Executive Carrie Lam, that it would be wise to scrap this proposed law, and moronic –or at least astoundingly expensive — to push it through.

Judicial Watch Looks Beyond the Headlines! by The Elephant's Child

This amazing video from Judicial Watch was like sitting down with a bunch of well-informed insiders and getting answers to most of the questions I had, and some I hadn’t thought of. Judicial Watch is a wonderful organization that works hard at forcing the federal government to fulfill their requirement to be reasonably transparent. They sue.  They take one department after another to court to get the information that is being withheld. I would love to see a list of the things that we know about only because Judicial Watch has been on the case.

We have just had an attempted coup, with one of our political parties attempting to get rid of a president they are afraid of, that they don’t like, because he’s on to them. He knows how crooked they are and wants to know why they are attacking every good thing he is trying to do for the country and the American people.

It’s fairly long, but broken up in modest segments so you can stop conveniently should you wish. But do watch it. You will be a better informed citizen.

Catching Up With Today’s Most Important Pieces by The Elephant's Child

The burning question of the day, seems to be about “social Justice”, which I think is pure bunk. There is no such thing. But here is an authority: Frederich Hayek the great economist to settle the question.

This is an old video, so I guess he didn’t settle the question at all, but there are still people out there demanding Social Justice, so there you are.

From amgreatness:Another Media-fueled Collusion Narrative Falls Apart

Here’s Andy McCartney on The Lessons of the Mueller Probe Andy has been an invaluable guide to the entire Mueller thing.

David Harsanyi called out presidential candidate Joe Biden on his absurd statement “For eight years, there wasn’t one single hint of a scandal or a lie”, so he reminded Biden of a few of them. (Quite a few.)

I have long suggested that what we really need are courses in basic human nature. So much of the frustration and anger out there would be relieved if people just understood that Life is hard, bad stuff happens, your feelings will be hurt, people you love will die, things will not be fair, and nobody cares that they are not fair. You will be insulted. You may be fired from a job. Perhaps unjustly. Life is not  fair. It’s up to how you deal with things. Celebrate the stuff that goes well, the special moments of deep happiness, But don’t go expecting justice, social or any other kind. Life is hard, and courage is the answer.

The New York Times Is Trying To Rewrite Their Own Climate History by The Elephant's Child

The New York Times, legendary “paper of record” is now attempting to rewrite their own history of what they have said about climate in the past. Not that anyone believes it is the paper or record these days. But it is an interesting correction to their reporting and making claims that are the exact opposite of reality. Revealing and Interesting.

The First Democrat Debates Are Coming Up by The Elephant's Child

Tuesday. Nancy Pelosi announced that she wants President Donald Trump in jail. Joe Biden spoke in Iowa this afternoon and said that Donald Trump represents an “existential threat” to the United States – and that the president “thinks he’s being  tough when someone else is feeling the pain.”

“Any beginning econ student at Iowa or Iowa State could tell you that the American people are paying his tariffs. The cashiers at Target see what’s going on — they know more about economics than Trump.”

Breitbart went on to say that Contrary to these claims, tariffs on China have not affected consumer prices for at least a year. Breitbart’s John Carney wrote in May that some Chinese imports have actually decreased in price after President Trump enacted new tariffs.

Democrats have always been given to calling Republicans “Hitler” and whatever noxious names they can think of, but this time around they have really gone round the bend. It’s a little harder to understand because Hillary was such a lousy candidate, and they don’t seem interested in her at this point at all.

Democrats waved the flag of tariffs and doom around over the Mexico deal, but Trump knew what he was doing, and I suspect he understands about free trade as well.

Pete Buttigieg, former mayor of South Bend, criticized President Donald Trump today for turning the United States into a country that looked more like Russia.

Russia nationalism, xenophobia, homophobia, and repression of the press are both highly disturbing in that country and disturbingly ascendant in our own country.

He claimed that rising white nationalism was more dangerous than radical Islamic terrorism.

In the past decade, more Americans have been killed in America by right-wing extremists than by those inspired by Al Qaeda and ISIS,” he said. “We need to acknowledge this threat too, and redirect appropriate resources to combat right-wing extremism and violent white nationalism.

I don’t know what the problems with “white nationalists” and “right-wing  extremism” are in South Bend, but perhaps that small Indiana city is more violent than we knew. This is apparently going to be a remarkably ugly campaign season. There are what — 24 Democrats out to challenge President Trump, unaware of the thriving economy, people back to work, wages going up, but Democrats have such a poisonous idea of Trump so far from reality that it is going to be unpleasant. Did you know that President Trump accepts no salary as president, and donates it to government needs or to charity?

Have you seen lots of violent white nationalism? Nationalism is not a dirty word, what they mean by right-wing extremism, I’m not sure, undoubtedly it means wanting control of our borders when Democrats had in mind planting illegals in districts where redistricting would give them control of the district for all upcoming elections — as Obama and Eric Holder planned.

There will be 6 debates held in 2019 and another 6 held in early 2020. but exact dates and locations have not been announced. Rachel Maddow has been announced as a moderator. Prepare yourselves.

Democrats Keep Pushing For Open Borders — Why? by The Elephant's Child

Democrats are excoriating the Republicans for being mean to the poor Mexicans, but we’ve been through that before. Now Senators Feinstein, Van Hollen, Cardin, and Kaine are urging the Senate to pass protections for “Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and “Dreamers”– the “kids” to whom Obama illegally promised amnesty, because they just wanted to go to college and were dreaming of becoming real Americans. The oldest of the “kids”— are now 39.The senators have introduced the SECURE Act (Safe Environment from Countries Under Repression and in Emergency Act) which would allow qualified TPS and DED recipients to apply for legal permanent residency.

Well, we have already learned that illegals are told how to apply for amnesty, and what to say, that will get them in. Senator Cardin (D-Md) said  The Senate must act and the president must sign into law protection for Dreamers, who mostly have known no other country but America, as well as Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) recipients, many of whom have been here for decades as violence and repression continue to rage in their home country,” Forgive me, but I doubt whether the good senator has any idea where these people come from and what the conditions are in their home countries.

We have immigration laws. You apply at a consulate or embassy, follow the rules and wait your turn. We have figured out about how many new immigrants we can handle each year, then we have all the H-1B workers needed by various industries to work for less money than the locals will, and their wives and children, and there really are people fleeing vicious treatment by their governments, so why the push for more and more immigrants? Is there some reason why we are required to just let everybody in? Other countries have immigration laws too, some far more restrictive than ours.

I welcome legal immigrants and am glad to help them get started, but I am not friendly towards open borders and illegal border crossers. Democrats like to parrot phrases like “We are a nation of immigrants” and extoll all the contributions of earlier waves of immigration. Are new immigrants likely to vote Democrat, support higher taxes and not be in favor of those old outmoded things like the Constitution and the rule of law? Why do Lefties depend so much on feeeeelings?

The Climate Has Been Changing for Millions of Years by The Elephant's Child

On the 75th anniversary of D-Day, Elizabeth Warren announced that Climate Change is “A Bigger Threat Than World War II”, and launched a Two Trillion “infrastructure investment plan” to address the threat of climate change, which she claims is a bigger threat to the American way of life than the enemies the Allied forces faced in World War II. The climate crisis in this country is a threat to the very existence of every living thing on this planet.

Not to be outdone in the climate panic department, our very own governor, Jay Inslee, who is running for the presidency on a climate based campaign in which the American people have showed no interest whatsoever, told an NBC News correspondent that President Trump’s stance on global warming is “treason.”

Something that is becoming increasingly obvious about Democrats is that they simply do not do their homework. It is remarkably obvious as well in the other 23 declared candidates for the presidency. They open their mouths and say something that should disqualify them from not only the presidency, but from whatever office they currently hold. Before you start spouting about existential threats to all life on the planet, you should have actually looked into the science. You could start with Dr. Roy Spencer and Dr.Tom Christy who measure the temperatures of the Earth for NASA at the University of Alabama at Huntsville.

The climate of the earth has been warming and cooling for millions of years. When the current interest fading into panic first reared it’s ugly head, all sorts of grants became available to anyone who could write a good grant proposal. Science departments in many universities felt that they could accomplish something with more powerful computers and the program used by financial people to forecast what the markets would do. Trouble was there were all sorts of unanswered questions out there, like the part played by clouds. They entered what they knew for sure, which was not all that much, and then their best guesses, and a few wild ones, and so we arrived at the current state of affairs.

Thing is, the planet is actually cooling, not warming. Glaciers are not melting, they are growing. Glacier National Park has quietly removed the signs “Gone by 2020” after the glaciers just kept on not being gone, but actually growing. The increased CO² in the atmosphere is greening the earth, since carbon dioxide, which we exhale, is a natural fertilizer for plants. The increased greening is visible from space.

The major greenhouse gas (95%) of the atmosphere is not Carbon Dioxide (CO²) but water vapor. (Clouds) According to Dr. Tim Ball, the next most important greenhouse gas of relevance is methane CH4, but it is only 0.000175 percent of atmospheric gases and 0.036 percent or all greenhouse gases. Water vapor is 95% of the atmosphere by volume, and is by far the most abundant and important greenhouse gas. And we just don’t understand clouds at all.

Surely when you were a kid, at some point you lay out on the lawn on a nice summer day to just watch the clouds drifting across the sky. If the action of clouds is a major determinant of climate, how do you measure that? Sometimes there are layers of clouds, each layer going in different directions. Sometimes there are lovely white clouds in front, and off in the distance big black thunderclouds, everything moving.

Then there is Christiana Figueres. She was the general secretary of the IPPC who admitted in a press conference that the goal of environmental activists was not to save the world from ecological calamity — but to destroy Capitalism.

“This is the first time in the history of mankind that we are setting ourselves the task of intentionally, within a defined period of time, to change the economic development model that has been reigning for at least 150 years, since the Industrial Revolution,” she said.

There are numbers of others in the climate field who have made similar admissions. There are innumerable books on climate and the error of climate panic, from Britain, Australia, Canada and the U.S. There’s a wide range of websites devoted to climate, I’ve listed just a few in the sidebar.

*The photo is looking due north. If you head over to the snowy peak and jump off towards the North, you will be where I grew up. This mountain is the northernmost anchor of the West range of mountains in Idaho. Nice country.

The Latest News from the Sunshine State by The Elephant's Child

Sometimes President Trump Really Does Know What He’s Doing, Give Him a Little Credit! by The Elephant's Child

President Donald Trump explained to the state of Mexico that the current situation at our southern border was unsustainable, and explained carefully that we can back up our request for a little help with more intrusive power if forced to do so. Of course, the Media immediately had the vapors, and talking heads in the media and in Congress claimed that a Trade War was completely unacceptable and a financial danger to our nation. Mexico, on the other hand, recognized hardball, promptly said of course they’d be glad to help out, and started doing so.

There is a clique of sorts in our nation’s capitol that believes firmly in the superior quality of the people in government. They are clearly smarter and better informed than the rest of the nation, because they are selected to rule over the rest of us. Wrong.

The rest of us recognize that we need a government to represent us as a nation, and every 4 years we pick someone to be in charge, and they, in turn, get to pick a lot of people to do the work. If they do a decent job of it for four years, we’re apt to keep them on rather than trade them in on a new model. The change over is always awkward as we figure out what the new person is all about. The clique prefers that we only elect those who are familiar with the Washington Cabal, and understand its ways with experience as an insider or at least a governor or a military officer. If the Founders had meant that, they would have said so. The Constitution attempts to restrain the federal bureaucracy, because the founders understood clearly that governments are the enemy, being inclined to want not just control, but way more control than should be allowed. It is the job of the people to keep them in line, and throw them out when they fail to grasp their correct role.

The Problem of Illegal Immigration by The Elephant's Child

The bloviating and sheer ignorance out there are dismaying. President Trump suggests to Mexico that we need more cooperation from them with the flow of migrants from Central America and elsewhere. Is his complaint justified?

Mexico is throwing the gates on its Southern border open for the migrants,  and providing trucks and buses to make their long journey north more comfortable. Someone is giving the migrants directions to explain that traveling with children as a family will make them more apt to get in, instructing them to apply directly to the Border Patrol upon crossing the border and ask for asylum. That surely is not discouraging would-be immigrants. Someone is supplying smugglers to help them reach the border in the most opportune spots. Someone is arranging for children to be available to pose as family for border-crossers. So it is quite clear that Mexico is not making any noticeable attempt to interfere with would be migrants. The President of Mexico even announced that “America is for Migrants.”

Naturally this is portrayed in the media as a “Trade War”conducted by a crazed illegal president who knows not what he is doing. No, it is not. It is a reminder to Mexico that when we ask for their help, we do have other more harsh weapons in our portfolio, much as we would regret to have to rely on those. It is just a matter of making things clear for all concerned. We expect some cooperation.

Democrats assumed that simply refusing any funds for a border wall, accusing the president of abusing little children, showing pictures of little children in cages left over from the Obama administration, creating “Sanctuary Cities” so they can attract illegals to their cities and refuse to turn even the criminal illegals over to ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) the official legal force dedicated to removing criminal aliens, which has been demonized thoroughly by the Left, as big meanies deporting nice immigrants who shouldn’t interfere because we are “a nation of immigrants.”

The Left wants more immigrants to be counted in the upcoming census to give them more Congressional representation, and more power, which is the reason for their existence.

Trump Threatens Tariffs, Mexico Sends Big Delegation by The Elephant's Child

The American people are concerned about illegal immigration, and our porous borders. Media personalities announce that if Trump doesn’t get control of the border, he’s toast. The Democrat run House refuses to consider repairing our current amnesty regulations. Democrat candidates offer empathy and compassion in varying degrees ranging from Beto’s suggestion that they should all be made citizens as soon as they cross the border, to a lot of blather about how we are a nation of immigrants, (no, we’re a nation of citizens) and the usual little children in cages bit (Obama administration photos), pleas for help from the Border Patrol, and reports of illegal children being recycled back across the border to be a family with another group of illegal border crossers to apply for asylum.

President Trump announced that he was going to stick Mexico with some heavy tariffs if they don’t help out with the problem. Mexico has been opening gates to Central American countries, offering buses or trucks to move migrants rapidly to our border, providing food and water. Mexican President ‘Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador “Amlo” says that America is for migrants, which seems to mean send them on to the U.S. Well, tariffs! Business community gasps. Media does their expected thing, calling everyone a racist.

Mexico is sending a big delegation to talk about the border. President Trump said “Problem is we have been “talking” for 25 years. We want action, not talk. They could solve the Border Crisis in one day if they so desired. Otherwise our companies and jobs are coming back to the USA.!”

In the 12 months up to October 2019, Mexico’s territory is expected to serve as the delivery route for roughly 800,000 Latin American migrants who will damage Americans’ blue-collar wages, neighborhoods, and schools.  Right now, in Mexico, there’s roughly 100,000 people trying to move up to the U.S. border.

Many Democrats say the United States is a “nation of immigrants” — not of Americans. Democrats also prefer to portray the job-seeking economic migrants as needy refugees fleeing crime and fame, even though many of the migrants clearly state they are migrating to get U.S. jobs and to get their kids into U.S. classrooms….

Each year, roughly four million young Americans join the workforce after graduating from high school or university.

But the federal government then imports about 1.1 million legal immigrants and refreshes a resident population of roughly 1.5 million white-collar visa workers — including approximately one million H-1B workers — and approximately 500,000 blue-collar visa workers.

The government also prints out more than one million work permits for foreigners, tolerates about eight million illegal workers, and does not punish companies for employing the hundreds of thousands of illegal migrants who sneak across the border or overstay their legal visas each year.

Inflating the labor supply helps economic growth for investors, for employers do not have to compete for workers by offering higher wages and improved working conditions. it moves investment and wealth to the coastal cities, raises rents and housing costs, shrinks real estate values in the Midwest, and rewards investors for creating low-tech, labor intensive workplaces.

Sanctuary cities attract illegals who will then be counted in the census. Democrats believe that ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) is evil, which makes things difficult. It is simply a sister organization to the Border Patrol. They call anyone who objects to illegal immigration “racist,”but that’s just their usual theme. You will notice that there are seldom large numbers of illegals in Schumer or Pelosi’s neighborhoods.
