Gives you a whole different idea of Thanksgiving, doesn’t it? That’s some courting display. What remarkable feathers and colors. I had no idea. The picture comes from the Audubon Society, so he must be real. They have just discovered a vast “gallery” of very early drawings on a cliff wall, somewhere in the Amazon. South America was apparently populated, not from North America, but from the Pacific islands. We don’t have to feel guilty about them at all, and the arrival of Columbus meant the vast Columbian exchange. Do read up on it. It’s quite fascinating.
The old world got lots of new vegetables and fruits, the new world got new infectious diseases like mumps and measles, smallpox and influenza, they paid us back with syphilis. Lots of depopulation. It was an age of exploration. South America got domestic animals, including pets. the old world got corn. The animals that the South Americans had domesticated didn’t seem to harbor disease; ducks, turkeys, alpacas, llamas. Many areas of the United States came to rely on animals that had arrived with the exchange, like the Navajos depended on sheep. No reason to be tearing down statues of Columbus, that’s sheer ignorance.
