Kamala Harris did indeed go to Guatemala today. She was met with protesters. This was ostensibly part of her effort to address the “root causes: of migration from Central America’s Northern Triangle (which also includes El Salvador and Honduras). Theoretically one her goals was to drum up investment for the region.
The Wall Street Journal reports lots of glad-handing with politicians, activists and sleezy businessmen who know a bit about political entrepreneurship. Guatemalan politics are highly corrupt, the rule of law doesn’t count for much. Did the visit accomplish anything? Unknown, but she tried. After my previous article, I thought I owed her that.
