Do I have readers out there who are never happy unless they have an absorbing novel waiting on a bedside table or in the kitchen? That’s me. Always have a a book nearby and available, Some I’m reading for the second or third time, or even more. The late James Clavell published his first book in the Asian saga in the 1970’s, My eldest son was just over to borrow another one.

Clavell was a master storyteller. His characters and events come alive. I recommend them all enthusiastically. The first is Shogun, a story of a British ship pilot coming ashore in a storm to 17th Century Japan, a part of the world unknown to Westerners. Language and customs unknown to him, a strange new land, with Portuguese Catholic priests who consider him to be an enemy and a threat, as they try to convert the Japanese to Catholicism.

There is a website that puts long lists of the books by a single author in correct order. Who knew? Anyway, just search for James Clavell, and you will find all of his books listed, and get the list put into the proper order as well. Good reading! The Japanese saga is followed by more books on Hong Kong and China. Then the Iranian revolution. All absorbing and excellent.

Thank you! I must have been half asleep! Had a terrible time replacing it all correctly. I don’t know what I was thinking. I see you are another Clavell reader. I’ve read them all more than once.
