The Eternal Search For Good Information! by The Elephant's Child

Unfortunately we elect people to high office without learning if they actually know anything or will surround themselves with knowledgeable people, and countries sometimes end up with some real dummies. “Britain’s Boris Johnson arrived in Italy for a Group of 20 meeting on Friday with a stark warning: modern civilization could soon lie in ruins like ancient Rome if world leaders don’t act to curb climate change. (This is in preparation for the big G-20 gathering on Friday.) No insult to Boris Johnson intended.

Big Climate Conference in Scotland. Everybody flying in on their private jets to see and be seen. Obviously our Earth is having a climate crisis, is it not? The Climate Crisis news drifted out of the last Davos meeting of the rich and well-heeled. So who says we have too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere? Seems to be the guy who is pushing for a One World Government. And obviously anything that comes out of Davos is sacred, is it not?

But too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere? Carbon dioxide, CO2, is not a pollutant, but a natural plant food. Nurseries pump in a little extra CO2 to help the plants in their greenhouses to grow stronger and more lush. The climate is not changing any more than it seasonally does. The slight increase of CO2 in the atmosphere has helped to create bountiful crops all over the world. Even Afghanistan has bragged about this year’s crop yields, and Australia wrote up their successful crops for the world press. A little excess CO2 is helping to feed a hungry world. They said all those private jets flying in created more CO2 in the atmosphere that the whole nation of Scotland created in a year!

Sorry, Boris. The atmosphere of the Earth is controlled by the action of our sun, and there’s not a damn thing you can do about it. Carbon Dioxide is not changing the climate, it’s plain old plant food, feeding a hungry world. There is no climate crisis, it was made up in one of those Davos meetings hopefully to rid the world of hated Capitalism. Christiana Figueres, who was at the time the General Secretary of the IPCC held a press conference at the time to explain to the world press that desireable purpose. Attendees at big Davos Conferences may be richer than you or me, but I’m not so sure about the brains!

Everybody rushed home from Davos, federal grants became widely available, which meant new lab equipment, new computers for clear information about what was happening out there. Well, they didn’t know either. But they entered what little they knew for sure in their computers, added their best guesses and some interesting possibilities and we were off the the races. If it’s a crisis, you can expect information to be changing, can’t you? Well, no. Whether it’s a crisis or not what we want is straight, honest information that we can act on. That shouldn’t be too much to ask, but apparently it is.

Joe Biden is Considering Paying Border-Crossers $450,000 Each in “Reparations” for Trying to Enter the Country Illegally. by The Elephant's Child

Somebody has slipped a cog, failed to understand the English language, failed to understand simple basic common sense, or has just drifted off into never-never land. I don’t know what the heck is going on!

President Joe Biden is considering a plan that would pay “border crossers” $450,000 each in “reparations”. WHAT? A plan that would give border crossers , who were subjected to former President Donald Trump’s “Zero Tolerance” policy about $450,000 each in a “reparations-style payment“.

“BORDER_CROSSERS” have NO RIGHT TO BE HERE AT ALL!. That’s why nations have borders. That’s why we have a BORDER PATROL, and laws about who may enter the country, We are a nation of citizens and people don’t get to just come willy-nilly and get paid for breaking the law and trying to enter illegally!!!

There was some concern early on about Joe Biden’s approaching senility, but I think we’re already there. Donald Trump was a very good president. He was sometimes a little rough speaking, but he did the right things for the American people. Poor Joe Biden simply cannot get past the ideas that he is the “hated Trump”, I guess. I’ve never seen anything like this! Yes, we are a very free country, with lots of amenities. If you admire our form of government work to install something similar in your own country. Americans are big believers in free people, and happy to help where we can.

Fines begin at $100 a day and increase incrementally at $100 per day, and the fines will turn up longshoremen ready and eager to unload ships? The fines are for companies that leave containers on the docks. That will fix everything right up, will it not? We seem to be having some problems understanding cause and effect and common sense.

It’s getting a bit disturbing out there. Headline: CNBC: “Biden hopes fines on lingering cargo containers ease congestion at major U.S. Ports.” What? The reported reason for “lingering cargo containers” is that there is no one available to unload the ships! So we’re going to fine them for not unloading, when the problem is that they cannot find anyone to unload?

Been a Little Preoccupied! by The Elephant's Child

Sorry, had to spend a few days in the hospital. Endured two lengthy PBS fundraisers, Innumerable jabs with needles (and some people out there are running around terrified of getting a simple vaccination!). Watched two attacks on Planet Earth from space aliens. The hospital food was pretty good. Had a major windstorm and and power outage, so the hospital was on their own backup power, fire engines running up and down the street. Not a dull moment! ( Except tor the PBS fundraisers) (My room was not as elegant, nor was the view!)

Been deprived of the news for about a week. At least the news and news sources that I have learned to depend on for some degree of verity. Used to think, (once upon a time) that one could depend on the news companies to report what was happening out there. One expects the usual slants, but if Germany surrenders, that’s it. We’re all just ordinary human beings, and have to learn to deal with it and each other. I suspect the schools are not really teaching the kids, in that way, about the difficulties of being human, and as far as that goes, what that means. And what one has to put up with. I am trapped in a house with neighbors on each side who let their dogs out in their yards to bark all day long, so I’m trapped. I do not have a dog at present, but have had dogs all my life as constant companions, starting with a big beautiful 1/2 St. Bernard 1/2 Great Pyrenees, when my dog was way bigger than I was. So my objection is not to the dogs , but to careless owners. It really gets tiresome!

In school. or for that matter even at home, were you ever taught anything about what it means to be a human being on a planet revolving around a minor star? To be “planetary life” and wonder if there was any more humanity somewhere out there? Reading, writing and arithmetic. Nobody taught us about what it means to be human, did they? That one you have to learn on your own!

Supply Chain Problems! Are There Any Solutions? by The Elephant's Child

Joe Biden’s fix for the Supply Chain Crisis is not working. He ordered the ports kept open for longer hours, but that was not the problem. The problem is and has been manpower to unload the ships, and for whatever reason that has just not been available. Next attempt will probably be to call out the National Guard to unload. That seems to be what is left. President Biden’s approval ratings shrink to new lows every day, and the “Brandon” song is leading on the charts. He is now flying planeloads of illegals to New York City every night. I have no idea what that is supposed to accomplish, a bigger city to hide them in? New York City does not need more illegals, particularly unvaccinated ones. Whoever is thinking up solutions for the Biden Administration needs to be fired. The American people need to have some kind of confidence in their president.

Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of Homeland Security, has tested positive for Covid, so he will be out of commission, hopefully to recover quickly. There seems to still be a vast fear of getting vaccinated. I think there’s some Trump Derangement Syndrome involved, and there are those who are angry about Mandates, but I really don’t understand the avoidance or reluctance. We’re trying to find out where to get our boosters. It is a worldwide pandemic, a lot of people have died, one would think people would not want to die from it, and be happy to contribute to defeating the disease. Does the fact that people keep calling it “a jab”play a part? Certainly I’d rather have a vaccination than a “jab”, but that as an objection would be silly.

Apparently lots of people are quitting their jobs because of the mandates to get vaccinated. I want a booster, and a flu shot. The federal government has not done nearly enough explaining the problems, and way too much mandating without explanation. From what I read online, there are lots of people who simply don’t know who they can trust or who to turn to for advice. All the fuss about Dr. Fauci has not helped. I have not seen numbers on how much of the population is computerized, and has access to the news that I take for granted. As I grew up very rural, I’m well aware of how long it can take for new technologies to reach rural areas. We produced our own electricity for many years before we actually got Idaho Power. We had a refrigeration plant, but we also had an icehouse and put up ice in the winter, which was a big event. That was so normal to me that I seldom realize how very strange it must be to city people.

Our nearest town was 9 miles away. There was a small grocery, post office, and gas station about 4 miles down the road. For many years we had our own gas station and post office. The train, which we called “The Galloping Goose” was a diesel affair with an engine, large passenger compartment and a mail car came up every day, often carrying swimmers and fishermen who would get off and swim or fish as was the case, and then catch the train back on it’s return trip to wherever they came from.

If you are interested in rural America, you might enjoy the books of John McPhee, starting with Coming In to the Country.

You Can’t Explain “Supply Chain Crisis” to Little Kids! by The Elephant's Child

from PsHere

The massive “infrastructure” bill now being debated in Congress would do nothing to fix the supply chain crisis, and Americans are being told they are probably out of luck when it comes to buying Christmas gifts. Christmas trees are reportedly going to be in short supply, and our elites are having special concerns about what are girls’ toys and what are boys’ toys and is there gender suppression in how they are arranged on the store shelves.

Can I say politely that ideas of suppression of gender sensitivities has gotten a bit out of control? One’s gender is determined at birth when the obstetrician says “It’s a Boy!” or “It’s a Girl!”. That’s it. Case Closed. If you want to be something else, that’s what you need to work on. Kids don’t know very much, and consequently are susceptible to all sorts of goofy ideas. I’m old enough to recognize that all this gender sensitivity is something recent and new. But this does seem to be an era of “sensitivities”. When we have to start rearranging store shelves lest we offend someone, it has gone way too far.

Pete Buttigieg was previously mayor of (I think) South Bend, Indiana, Not highly ranked by the locals. He lost me when he drove to Washington D.C. to accept his new job at the Transportation Department offices, and parked in a distant parking lot, and got his bike out of the car, so he could be seen arriving at his new job on a bicycle, which would show the proper sensitivity for the underdogs in the transportation field? We do want our representatives in the government to show some concern for the American people, but that seems to be carrying it a bit too far. Mr. Buttigieg is gay, married to his partner, and they have recently adopted premature twins, which is why he was on “parental leave” when he needed to be tending to the cargo crisis, and let his partner cope with the babies. There are lots of nurses for hire if needed.

Rich Lowry addressed the U.S. Supply Chain at National Review. He said: “if there is one universally recognized principle in American political life, it’s that the president of the United States should want Christmas to come off without a hitch.” Which is probably correct. We just had Anthony Fauci backing off from his comment that it was perhaps too early to say whether people should gather for the holiday.

At least one California High School is teaching it’s seniors how to drive a truck. But the problem is unloading the ships. I don’t know any more than that. We will see just how our “ruling class” resolves this crisis. Newly minted truck driving high school seniors does not fill me with confidence. But then I don’t expect any of my Christmas gifts to be arriving by cargo ship anyway.

What we miss in the photo is a conception of size. Those “shipping containers” are what they are trying to turn into housing for the homeless, and perhaps for the rest of us as well.

Kamala Harris was warning in August “if you want to have Christmas toys for your children, it might be time to buy them because the delay might be many months” so this was apparently expected. The only thing the President has done is to keep the port of Los Angeles open 24/7 which may help but is not going to be a game changer. I don/t have any little kids in the family, so toys are not a problem for me, but those who do have my sympathy.

This is Pete Buttigieg’s job. You can’t explain “supply chain” to little kids.

Moody’s Economist: Biden’s Inflation is Costing Average Americans an Extra $175 a month.

Never Fear: We Are Saved! Jen Psaki Says So! by The Elephant's Child

A few of the cargo ships waiting offshore for entry to the Port of Los Angeles to hopefully unload.

Presidential Press Secretary and budding economist Jen Psaki said that we don’t need to worry about inflation, because it just proves that people are buying lots of goods which shows that the economy is doing well, and anyway, that will all be gone next year, because all the economists say so.

Anchor Jake Tapper on CNN’s “the Lead” said “Inflation is skyrocketing as I don’t need to tell you. The prices for home heating costs, cars, groceries, furniture, rent gasoline are hitting Americans right in the wallet. The White House response has been generally to say, :Hey, inflation shows we;re coming out of the recession. It’s a good sign.

“President Biden’s chief of staff Ron Klain enthusiastically retreated an economist who said in part ‘Most of the economic problems, inflation, supply chains, et-cetera, are high-class problems.’ Now I get the larger point that when we’re talking about economics, we’re coming out of recession. But doesn’t it seem tone-deaf to say that rising prices and empty grocery store shelves are high-class problems? Isn’t that a bit dismissive?”

The White House is citing the need to “Diversify Fuel Sources” in response to the (non-existent) climate crisis. But then Joe Biden is going over to consult the Pope about the climate crisis, so that will surely clear up any concerns about the climate.

The job of Press Secretary to a President of the United States is a tough job, and sure to give one a fine position in the media when their president’s term is over. But is does call for a voluminous knowledge of history and economics and law, and a little of everything else.

What is Really Going On Out There? by The Elephant's Child
October 15, 2021, 6:47 pm

Are you getting the feeling that Nothing is working? The goods we need for Christmas giving are sitting in cargo ships clustered offshore in most American ports unable to be unloaded because there are no workers to unload the ships. Apparently there is also a shortage of truck drivers to take the goods to wherever they are supposed to go. One article I saw said that they were teaching high school seniors how to drive trucks!

The border is a mess. Joe Biden has invited Central America and whoever else is out there to just come to our Southern Border and they will be allowed in to disappear into our vast country. They are beginning to sound a little less inviting, but keep releasing those who appear at the border into the United States. The numbers keep climbing. They made a lot of noise about how they were flying the Haitians back to Haiti, but that’s apparently not happening either. There used to be laws against hiring illegal aliens, but that made them cheap to hire because they had a hard time finding work.

The media has demonized the hard work the Border Patrol actually does with absurd claims of using the reins of their horses as whips, which is just the stupidity of those who have never been close to a horse with a Western saddle. The Border patrol saves a lot of lives, rescuing those who get lost in the border mountains, those who get swept away in the Rio Grade, which is a fair-sized river. Unaccompanied children are a huge problem. I guess they are supposed to find relatives who are already here

We get daily warnings of how prices are climbing, usually illustrated with the signs illustrating the cost of a gallon of gas, and now that winter is coming a little closer, warnings of the cost of heating our homes. It’s hard to know what are serious warnings of rising prices and what’s just reporters looking for attention. My faith in the press is in serious decline.

Lots of people still refusing to get a Covid vaccination. I can understand those who get their backs up at being ordered to get vaccinated, which seems to me to be a problem easily solved with more explanation of the disease, the dangers, the problems of a worldwide pandemic, but I don’t know if that is true or not.

Crime seems to be on the rise, overdose deaths are definitely on the rise, whether from the more ample supply of dangerous drugs from the Mexican cartels coming across the border, or just people using more because of the current economy. San Francisco has stores closing because of the uncontrolled shoplifting of anything and everything. Parents are upset with the curriculum of the schools their children attend and are raising hell at School Board meetings, which offends PTA’s because they are not sure that parents are entitled to decide what their children should be taught.

Yes. Apparently Nothing is Working! And what do we do about that? I have some ideas, but they have to wait for the next election.

The “Masters of the Universe” Don’t Know What They Are Talking About! by The Elephant's Child
October 14, 2021, 9:47 pm

Several days ago, I wrote a post about “The Masters of the Universe Speak Out! Ooops!Google announced that they would “prohibit the monetization” of accounts that are skeptical of manmade climate change” which indicated that they were entirely unfamiliar with climate science and didn’t know what they were talking about. It is a little more complicated than that. The idea arose out of one of those big Davos meetings for the rich and politically inclined, where everyone flies in on their private jet airplanes, and only the rich and important are invited. In considering the problems of the world that they were there to solve. since they were rich and important, they settled on Climate Change as a problem worthy of their intent. Christiana Figueres, who was at the time, the General Secretary of the IPCC , held a press conference to explain to the reporters hungry for any bit of titillating news, that it was the world’s best chance of discrediting and removing hated Capitalism from the world. Americans are generally pretty much in favor of Capitalism, but that was their aim.

Grants from the government quickly became available and university labs that promised to be investigating this dire catastrophe got new equipment for their labs and even new assistants. They fired up their computers and entered what they knew about the climate for sure, which wasn’t all that much, and added what their compatriots were saying and what they hoped were intelligent guesses, and were off to the races. Carbon Dioxide, which is a natural fertilizer for plants, became the villain, because it had been increasing slightly in the atmosphere and they had to have something to blame it on. There is no reason to assume that Google is particularly well-informed. Just politics, and a way to emphasize their importance. The climate of the Earth is determined by the actions of our Sun. Carbon Dioxide makes crops more bountiful as it is a natural fertilizer. Nursery greenhouses pump in a little extra CO2 to help their plants grow! Even Afghanistan has reported extra-bountiful crops this year, as has Australia and have farmers all over the world. But scaring the public with tales of climate disaster made their desired “Great Reset” and One World government seem a little more plausible.

There is an unfortunate tendency among those who have had a good idea and become very very rich to assume that their good fortune means that they really are brilliant, and should tell the rest of the world what to do. You will see examples of the tendency frequently. Two climate scientists that I listen to frequently are Dr. Roy Spencer PhD and Dr. John Christy PhD at Huntsville Alabama. Dr. Spencer runs the satellites that measure the temperature of the atmosphere for NASA, and Dr. Christy measures with weather balloons also for NASA. Links to websites in the sidebar, and visit Climate Depot, Watts Up With That , and Master Resource as well, regularly.

I was a English major, which means I read a lot and read everything, and I grew up at 4000′ altitude in the mountains of Idaho, mostly outdoors, on 400 acres surrounded by National Forest, with three miles of river running through it. Beats apartment living and a once in a year hike in the woods. Spent time at ranger stations and lookouts too. Been snowed in, flooded and lost several buildings, and we had to generate our own power. Had lightning strike about 100 yards from the house (That’s a major noise), and the best sled run in the country. Shot one Lynx, 3 rattlesnakes, 2 porcupines and large numbers of woodrats (nasty critters).

TWO Million “Migrants” in 2021! by The Elephant's Child

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol is reporting a record of nearly two million “migrants” encountered so far in 2021. The newer thing is of course, that we now call them migrants rather than “illegal aliens”. Joe Biden has invited the population of Central America to come to the border and be admitted to the United States of America. I believe there is some statistical indication that illegal immigrants when made citizens able to vote, are inclined to vote Democrat. I don’t know if this is what Joe Biden has in mind or not.

From Cal Thomas, The Washington Times: “Illegal Immigration is destroying our country”

CBP to Report Record of Nearly 2 Million Migrants Encountered in 2021

Joe Biden has actually said that they will be located in “swing states” so they can eventually change the vote to be more favorable to Democrats. So at least, his intentions are quite clear.

It might go down a bit better with the American people if they were located where workers were especially needed, rather than where it’s hoped they will alter the vote, but perhaps that is expecting too much.

We have a system for people who want to come to America and become Americans. It’s not complicated. You go to the nearest American consulate or embassy and apply, and then you wait your turn. Not instantaneous, but legal. You get welcomed. We do appreciate it when people do it the legal way.

Some Days Promise to Be a Bit Off! by The Elephant's Child

I’m sure everyone sometimes awakens in the morning, remembering what they had just dreamed. This morning I remembered dreaming that our lives had been taken over by D.B. Cooper! The name seemed vaguely familiar, but I could not remember why or who he was, so I had to look him up when I started up the computer. Bet you don’t remember either! (Look it up) Why that would pop up in my sleep remains a mystery. But with an early look at the news of the day, perhaps something is just off!

Department of Homeland Security Chairman Alejandro Mayorkas is promising to end the workplace enforcement of migration laws, and to help illegal migrants get higher wages from their U.S. employers. Other than the illegalities involved in that promise, the only reason why illegal Immigrants get jobs at all is because they are illegal and thus cost less to hire. We don’t understand what our job is?

Then Nancy Pelosi scolded the American press. She told reporters that “You could do a better job” selling Biden’s Radical Agenda. Vice President Kamala Harris lamented America’s “Shameful Past and Devastation Wrought by European Settlers. California’s Gavin Newsom is going to save the world from an overheating climate by banning gas-powered leaf blowers and lawn mowers. Demi Lovato, whoever she is , says the term “Alien” is “Derogatory” Offensive to Extraterrestrials.” We should use “ETS” instead. At that point, I wondered if going back to bed and starting over would help.

Vice President Kamala Harris had some children over to her home at the Naval Observatory for a NASA Space Video, to tell them what a wonderful experience seeing the Space Video was going to be. Turns out the “children” were not just ordinary children learning about space, but child actors hired to be the children properly impressed with their upcoming experience. Sigh.

Perhaps tomorrow will be a better day.

Not a New Book, but Invaluable! by The Elephant's Child

Angelo Codevilla was killed recently in a tragic automobile accident. I have had and re-read this book for years, and want to recommend it. A valuable explanation of the way things really work. Amazon still has a few copies, or your public library should have it. Explains how all those things that are so annoying, like AOC’s “Tax the Rich” ball gown, or Hunter Biden’s remunerative art show actually happen.

They have been haggling lately over raising the debt limit so they can borrow more (raise your taxes more) with the usual ploy of calling it “infrastructure”. That’s a word that the public usually accepts because they think of the annoying roads and bridges in their area and assume they will get fixed, though that may not be the case at all.

Good book, enlightening. Recommended.
