In 1970 the price of a gallon of gas was 36 cents. Didn’t break a dollar until 1980 when it reached $1.19. It hovered around that general area until 1980 when the average cost went up to $1.19. Dipped briefly1986 for 3 years, then climbed back over a dollar. The highest average cost was $3.64 in 2012. Here’s the “Gas Price History” I found from “credit donkey”. Young people obviously won’t find today’s prices as shocking as the rest of us do. Does make Joe Biden’s attempt to blame it on Putin look more than a little silly. And trying to blame it on gas company “price gouging” is just petty politics.
What year did you learn t6o drive? I learned to drive on a Model A Ford Truck with a stick shift on the floor. We didn’t have any “driver education” in my small town at that time. Parents taught their kids to drive. We were 9 miles from the closest town, and I spent more time on my horse. Lots of logging trucks on the road, barrelling along, so I mostly stayed off the road anyway. And the trails through National Forest were much more interesting.
Just this last year, my doctor asked me when I broke my back? I knew immediately when it was. My only spectacular fall. My horse has been trained as a “cutting horse”. which means that she was trained to cut a specific steer out of a herd. We ran into s small group of 8 or ten steers on top pa a hill nearby, and my mare immediately tried to cut one out of the herd. She went one way and I went another. The friends I was riding with had to take me home draped across the saddle. I never knew I had broken my back though. I was just sore for quite a while, but assumed it was just bruises.
Have you changed all your clocks? Daylight savings time today.
ADDENDUM: President Biden is begging OPEC to pump more oil, but Democrats in Congress are threatening American Oil Companies with a “windfall-profits tax” if they actually increase production. Elizabeth Warren tweeted on Thursday “Putin’s war is driving up gas prices, and BIG Oil companies are raking in record profits. So she and eleven other Democrats have introduced legislation to make sure they don’t make any extra money. The Wall Street Journal noted that this “nicely summarizes progressive energy policy.” If I had my druthers, I’d introduce legislation that forced all members of Congress to take a short course in basic economics each year before their first session. Windfall profits tax indeed!
