Climate and Environmentalists and CO2, Oh My! by The Elephant's Child

The climate of the Earth is controlled by the action of our sun, and the sun seems to be just fine, shining away up there. The concerns about the climate arose largely because there seemed to be slightly more CO2, (carbon dioxide) in the atmosphere. “Concerns” was too mild a word by far. A fairly large group of people have become “environmentalists”. That is, they identify themselves as caring deeply about the environment, and assume that the rest of you out there are deeply lacking because you don’t care enough about the environment. So what does that mean? Different things to different people. Some just like the untrammeled wilderness, or a stretch of good hiking in the local mountains. Some don’t have “local” mountains and go to some on vacation.

I live on a hill in a Seattle suburb. About four blocks down the street you run into a patch of about 10 acres of woods with trails, which on the far side is connected to a botanical garden, and there are trails through the woods. The “botanical garden” is pretty much just all natural growth and woods, with a stream flowing through. With the “environmental movement” the railroad that serviced the East side of Lake Washington has been turned into a “trail” (no more trains, trucks are cheaper for deliveries of goods). As a trail, it’s a major flop. Never seen anybody “hiking” it. Lake Washington is a big lake and many separate towns surround it, and on the East side, the suburbs stretch to a second lake, Lake Sammamish. Makes for nice communities and lots of waterfront, streams and some beach parks. If you go just a little further East, you are in the coastal range of mountains. which extend pretty much from Canada down to Mexico. Nice territory, come visit sometime.

“Environmentalists” seem apt to be city people who have only become familiar with mountains and woods in recent years, and feel that caring deeply somehow sets them apart from the uncaring. Officialdom has turned the abandoned railroad grades into “trails” which makes them feel good, but there seem to be few people actually “hiking” on the trails. I grew up in the mountains of Idaho, familiar with the outdoors and everything that goes with it. Had a horse for transportation, and never learned how to ride a bicycle. Too many logging trucks on our road in too much of a hurry. When I got old enough. I learned how to drive on a Model T truck that we equipped for plowing the snow in the winter. We have coyotes here, but they are fairly adaptable in many American cities, as I learned when I was posting pictures of our native wildlife. I’ve lived in quite a few cities too, but never run into an urban coyote. Don’t like cities!

CO2, carbon dioxide, is a natural fertilizer for plants, all over the world. The slight increase that has panicked environmentalists, has meant record crops all over the world. Australia has written up their splendid crop yields this year for the international press. In the midst of an unpleasant war, Afghanistan still had record crops, and there was no problem for food for the people.
