Just Do Not Murder Ethel Williams! by The Elephant's Child

I’m not happy with the journalism profession. I am, however, very interested in the news. Journalists seem to be interested in celebrities, boobs, and murders. The celebrity problem revolves around the definition of “celebrity”. Reporters regard the name that might be instantly recognized as a known person as an anchor for attracting a reader to their story. I’m not much interested in celebrities, any of them. They are “celebrities” because they have had their names in print previously and the journalist feels you might be interested in more. Well, lets say I draw the name Ethel Williams out of thin air. I’m not going to care about Ethel until someone gives me a reason to care about Ethel. Most of the people who don’t know Ethel aren’t going to be interested in any story about her in any case. If Ethel has big boobs, then her photo should take care of the problem. Unfortunate, but apparently accurate. And as far as murders are concerned, society seems to be supplying us with a vast selection.

I don’t remember any time when we seemed to have such a constant crop of murders constantly available. I don’t know if there are actually more murders or just more coverage of what is going on across the country. Journalists want to write stores that get read and look for the most inviting material. A dramatic murder, good boob photograph an interesting location, and the story will get read and repeated. Is this just ordinary life as it is now? Today is seems as if the question is “who got murdered today?” rather than “My God, a murder?”

I asked my computer and apparently a poll says that 56% of Americans think violent crime is higher today than normal. I am also told that the U.S. murder rate is the highest it’s been in 25 years as big cities shatter the records reporting increased rates of murder. So there you go. just ask your computer.

The president’s reaction is to ban “assault weapons”, whatever they are, so nothing will change at present. Is much of this just the usual “don’t blame me” blather”? or will anything change at all.
