Seattle, Washington. It is 3:00 in the afternoon here, and looks like it is getting dark. In the far distance that I can see from my second story, east facing window, it seems a little smoky, but probably more local fires in the fireplace than any major fire anywhere. I’m highly trained by growing up in the mountains to keep track of signs of forest fires. Not likely in a Seattle suburb, but I’m stuck with the training, and always unconsciously looking for signs of smoke. Our 400 Idaho acres abutted National Forest to the North, with BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land to the East and West. Our property was partly circled by about three miles of one of the last free-flowing rivers in the country. Nice river, lots of trout, and good fishing spots.
There are a lot fewer houses that I can see from my window that have put Christmas lights around the edge of their roofs, than most years. No idea why. Just one house on the lane below that I can see. I just sense something a little different this year.
