I just learned that President Biden’s “Climate Czar” is John Kerry! NO WONDER!! What on earth did President Biden think that John Kerry knew about the climate of the Earth that might possibly be of any use? Sorry, I have a list of federal officials that contains the names of government officials that I wouldn’t trust to walk my dog. I do not believe that because someone has been given a governmental job, that means that they are well qualified to perform the task to which they have been assigned. You know that as well as I do.

There are debts to be repaid, donations appreciated, that sort of thing, and sometimes a federal title is the best way to repay the donor, at least if it has a significant title. “Climate Czar” certainly sounds important, even if nobody has figured out just what we can possibly do about the Climate of the Earth, nor, for that matter if there is anything anybody can do about the climate. Since the Climate is clearly controlled by the action of our sun, good luck with that one. There were folks back in the 1800’s that got all frightened about the climate, for some unknown reason, and went out to sit on the side of their hills to wait all night, to see if the sun really did come up again. If our schools or our parents made a major task of teaching their children to use the library when they were worried about something or became aware that they really didn’t know something, we’d be far better off. The idea is not to get all excited about some major issue until you have probed to find out what the issue really is and what, if anything, can be done about it.

I suspect that many public officials have no idea who they should appoint to an important, or for that matter – minor office when they are confronted with the need. Do they use the office to repay their supporters and donors, or do they study up on what the duties and expectations of the office are and what needs to be accomplished. I suspect we both have a pretty good idea on how that one works out. It would be nice if we could be confident that each appointer was going to appoint the most qualified person to fill the job, but there you go. That’s almost a short course in the way things really work.

I have no idea what we could do to improve appointment to important or minor offices. That’s just the way the real world works.
