The Phony Climate Panic Goes On and On by The Elephant's Child

The British Paper The Guardian, has just published an article with the headline “Australia Fires are Foretaste of Earth’s Future” by someone labeled Thomas D. Williams PhD.

The “apocalyptic” scenes of raging Australian bushfires will become commonplace around the world without a major drop in emissions, the Guardian newspaper warned Tuesday.

The Guardian, which has publicly pledged “to give global heating, wildlife extinction and pollution the urgent attention and prominence they demand,” insisting that the climate emergency is “the defining issue of our times,” has amped up its climate agitation by suggesting that Australian wildfires is the new normal. …

Citing one of the Guardian’s favorite climate “experts,” Richard A. Betts, head of the Climate Impacts strategic area at the Met Office Hadley Centre in Exeter, Harvey says that Australia’s fires would be normal if global temperatures were to rise by 3ºC above pre-industrial levels.

Betts, who along with others has pushed for an intensification of climate rhetoric, such as replacing “global warming” with “global heating,” said that Australia is “a sign of what would be normal conditions in a 3C world. It tells us what the future world might look like.”

Well, except that Australia has said that the fires are manmade and arrested a number of people for arson, including a few who had disobeyed the law by throwing lighted cigarettes out the car window. Scientists here have confirmed that Australia’s brush fires are not caused by “climate change.”

A Facebook glitch revealed that Greta Thunberg’s Facebook page is written by her father Svantes Thunberg and “Climate Crisis Activist” Ardash Prathap. It might be interesting to see who paid for her travel from Sweden across the Atlantic ocean to address the United Nations in New York by sailboat. or who arranged for the speech and her travel around the United States and visits with Hollywood celebrities. All very strange.

A website called “Interesting Engineering” points out that this year will mark the lowest solar activity in over 200 years. No sunspots! Yet we are told that the absence of sunspots represents a cooling phase.

I mention fairly often that Christiana Figueres, the general secretary of the IPCC, in a radio broadcast in early February of 2015, admitted that the goal of environmental activists is not to save the world from ecological calamity but to destroy Capitalism.

The Canadian Minister of the Environment at the time, the late Christina Stewart, said “No matter if the science is all phony; there are collateral environmental benefits…Climate change [provides] the greatest chance to bring about justice and equality in the world.”

And I just got a notice from my congressman that indicates that he is proud to sponsor (with huge amounts of taxpayer money) efforts to delay Climate Change with wind and solar, which we have already determined just don’t work. So there you go.

A possible reason why one should be cautious about the activities of government, any government.

Addendum: I should probably add that the world’s 76 best Tide Gauges show a mean 0.34 mm (that’s 34% of one millimeter) rise in sea level. If you don’t recognize a millimeter, it’s smaller than the distance between the two ll’s in the word millimeter. Santa Barbara doesn’t need to paint the white line across the streets to prepare for the rise of the ocean just yet.

Also: Glacier National Park has quietly removed the signs that said the glaciers were shrinking from “climate change”, and replaced them signs and literature that acknowledged that the glaciers are indeed growing.

It Makes No Sense, No Sense at All! by The Elephant's Child

From Hot Air, by Kevin Williamson:

Trump’s wrongdoing is real and significant, but Pelosi et al. never had the moral credibility to make a persuasive impeachment case against him or the political juice to get it done. Democrats were talking about impeachment before the man was ever sworn in as president, and they remain emotionally dependent upon their preposterous tale about Russians on Facebook throwing the election to Trump. (The Russians, for their part, wanted paralyzing chaos and to destabilize the United States politically — Mission Accomplished, Ivan.) The Democrats would have been far better off simply telling the truth about Trump’s failings and challenging him at the polls rather than presenting this as an apocalyptic drama that cannot wait for an election and resolution on ordinary democratic terms. Apocalyptic dramas are pretty hard to sell when unemployment is low, and it is possible to exaggerate the sins of even Donald Trump.

From Hot Air by David Harsanyi:

While civility is an imperative in a decent society, we can’t ignore that Trump’s coarseness has also helped reveal the liberal establishment’s incivility and disdain for anyone who refuses to adopt its cultural mores. I’m sorry, I have a hard time taking etiquette lessons from people who can’t raise any ire over the Virginia governor’s casual description of euthanizing infants but act as if every Trump tweet should trigger his removal from office through the 25th Amendment.

So while I don’t like Trump any better today than I did when writing those critical pieces, I do live in the world that exists, not the one I wish existed. And that world has changed. What I didn’t foresee when writing about Trump’s candidacy was the American Left’s extraordinary four-year descent into insanity.

Most people grew up in a neighborhood where everyone else was much like themselves. They never knew anyone who was significantly different. I didn’t grow up in a neighborhood, but in the country where the closest neighbors were a mile or more away, and nothing like me at all. But here are two Conservatives who don’t like Trump, and yet have trouble with the Left’s Trump Derangement Syndrome. Williamson finds Trump’s wrongdoing real and significant. ?? Harsanyi doesn’t like him because of his coarseness, Yes, Trump responds directly to attacks, and responds in kind. Anybody remember LBJ?
Well government is hard, and the people often do not like their governors, but Trump’s accomplishments would seem to outweigh at least some of the dislike. And yes, the Democrats had decided to impeach him even before he was elected. Trump’s accomplishments in office are amazing and truly welcome.

Yet: “Trump’s Average Unemployment Rate is the Lowest in Recorded History.” There are more women working than at any time in history, and more women currently working than men. The Washington Examiner follows up with “It’s still possible the economy will decline in time for it to hurt Trump in the election. And the Trump presidency has been polarizing for many other reasons. ”

At Powerline, Steven Hayward quotes Joel Kotkin:
For much of the last seventy years, economic growth has lifted the quality of life in Europe, North America, and East Asia, providing social stability after the violent disruptions of World War II. Today, however, many of the world’s most influential leaders, even in the United States, reject the very notion that societies should improve material wealth and boost incomes given what they believe are more important environmental or social equity concerns. . .
Can anyone out there make sense of all this for me? I thought a president was someone you elected to accomplish things and make the economy better.

What You Need to Know About the Southern Border by The Elephant's Child

Naturally, I like to write my own sterling opinions, which I assume are entirely correct, but I have the feeling that you would rather hear it direct from the horse’s mouth, as the saying goes. This is a conversation between Jessica Vaughn for the Center for Immigration Studies and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Acting Commissioner Mark Morgan. He is well chosen to occupy this post with his long experience in the field.

The talking points and misinformation that we normally hear have little to do with the actuality in the field. The flow of people who want to get in to the United States is huge, composed of people from all over the world. But it’s not a simple thing to understand. We hear lots about compassion and concern, and a lot less about the Cartels and their activity which includes not just the Wall, which is being built, but drugs coming across the border. 68,000 Americans died this past year from drugs smuggled in across the Southern Border. Sixty-eight thousand!

There’s lots of human smuggling, sex trafficking, and drugs, the Cartels haul in billions from their take in supporting all this evil. Democrats, interested in compassion, and their own designation as “good people”, are apt to believe that we should care deeply about these poor people who just want to participate in the good life that America promises. It is way more complicated than that.

The estimate is 150,000 people who make it across unchecked, and unaccounted for, not those who are caught and tallied. They assume that the actuality is much larger. Mr. Morgan points out that not all of them are bad people, but a heck of a lot are. The Wall is not an invention of President Trump’s. It is the results of the request of the Border Patrol for a badly needed wall.

Do watch the whole thing. We need more people who understand what the real situation is, and what the Border Patrol faces. We have a lot of Politicians who come up with a lot of false information. It’s a complicated and complex situation, and we need more informed and concerned Americans.

Kimberly Strassel on The Resurgence of Socialism Today by The Elephant's Child

For those of you who are not familiar with her, Kimberly Strassel is a writer at the Opinion Page of the Wall Street Journal, and a perceptive observer of the current scene. Here she appeared on the Eric Metaxis show to discuss her new book on the Resurgence of Socialism today. It is more than worth your time, as is her book.

The remarkable Democrat insistence that President Trump’s removal of perhaps the world’s worst Terrorist leader, Iran’s head of the Quds Force, was an attempt to start World War III passes all realms of sanity into sheer partisan goofiness, and leaves one wondering — what is the matter with these people? They should be celebrating that the world is at the very least a small bit safer. Soleimani was responsible for the death of many U.S. soldiers and an evil presence in the world.

The vague idea that Socialism would improve anything whatsoever demonstrates nothing so much as ignorance of history, and the havoc that misguided idea has created in the world as we know it.

American Journalism Has Gone Too Far. by The Elephant's Child

Well, the Democrat Media certainly messed up this time. They are so committed to attacking anything done by the hated President Trump that they side with one of the world’s worst terrorist leaders. They are no longer doing journalism. Soleimani has been listed as a top terrorist since 2007, and now they find him as the equivalent of our vice president rather than a hired gun against Americans, and a very deadly one at that.

Donald J. Trump was elected as the President of the United States in a free election, defeating Hillary Clinton, and they cannot get over it. Hillary was a deeply flawed candidate who would have been a disaster as a president,  but she was a Democrat and that is apparently all that matters. The rage of Congressional Democrats and the Hollywood celebrities (who hire press agents to keep their names in the news so they can remain celebrities), toward this president is hard to understand.

I gather that their rage is based on the fact that Trump is doing a fabulous job with the economy, lowest unemployment in history, stock market high, unneeded regulations cut back, and Obama insisted that times had changed and it was no longer possible for an economy to grow at more than 2 percent. The Wall Street Journal remarked today that:

In his address to the nation this morning, Donald Trump asserted that the ballistic missiles that targeted the al-Assad and Erbil bases in Iraq yesterday were paid for using “funds made available by the last administration.” Few things irritate media fact checkers more than Trump’s accusation that Obama helped fund the Iranian regime and its terror apparatus. Probably because it’s completely true.

Now, we don’t really know that Obama’s ransom payments to Iran in 2016 subsidized those specific ballistic missiles, but we do know that money is fungible — especially when you have access to small denominations of European cash — and that the military, IRGC, and Hezbollah were the major beneficiaries of the replenished coffers of the Iranian state. Distinctions over the details of the exact allocation of funds would be completely irrelevant in any conversation not involving Donald Trump. Yet Andrea Mitchell and CNN, and all the usual suspects, immediately rallied to Obama’s defense to also explain that actually Trump is talking about money we owed Iran.

We never “owed” the Islamic Republic any money. This is a myth. In 2016, the United States was in the middle of an unresolved dispute in front of the Iran-U.S. Claims Tribunal at The Hague over cash advanced by the Shah for military equipment we refused to deliver after the 1979 revolution. You might recall, this is when Iran began prosecuting its war against the United States, taking hostages, and killing service members.

Democrats want to be in charge, to control, so we will not annoy them with ideas or programs they don’t like. You will find the impulse located somewhere between Socialism and Communism. Iran seems to have shot down the Ukrainian airliner by mistake, or not, with so many Canadians on board. There were no survivors. But it must be President Trump’s fault. Strange times.

Is It Just Not Fair? Do The Rich Just Get Richer? by The Elephant's Child

Journalists write about studies, and suggest that life is just not fair for ordinary folk, that only the rich get richer, and the rest of us suffer. Is that true? Here’s economist  Russ Roberts, a fellow at the Hoover Institution who explains the real numbers, and why its so confusing.

Here’s how it really works.

These Are Interesting Times Indeed! by The Elephant's Child

I think the ancient Chinese curse is “May you live in interesting times.” I may be mistaken because I didn’t look it up but depended on my memory. Well, they are interesting indeed. President Trump acted on an opportunity to get one the world’s worst terrorist leaders, and our national media erupted in horror, completely forgetting that our embassy in Iraq had been attacked, or ignoring this inconvenient bit. The information was correct, we were able to hit Quassam Soleimani and eliminate a terrorist dedicated to attempts to harm the United States and our military at every opportunity.

Democrats in Congress were incensed that they were not consulted for their formal consent and approval, neglecting to consider that in such situations the President does not need to consult Congress, nor does he need their approval. He is the Commander in Chief. He gets to protect our Embassy, it’s staff, our military.

The Embassy is sovereign American territory, which was attacked. Soleimani has been a formally designated terrorist and terrorist leader since 2007. That this comes in the midst of an attempt to impeach the President with a Democratic Party that is consumed with their desire to get rid of the terrible Trump, leaves the Democrats in a sticky position. They cannot approve of anything Trump does at the moment, yet taking the opposing position puts them on the wrong side as well.

Some have pointed out the example of Benghazi and our embassy there, and the failure of our State Department to provide them with the needed security to prevent the death of the Ambassador, his aide and two former Seals working as government contractors. It was inexcusable.

What is disheartening is the response of the media who can’t put aside their partisan outlook long enough to report events as if they are journalists rather than just partisan Democrats.
