Treat Serious Subjects with a Degree of Respect by The Elephant's Child

Muslim-PrayerThe media’s freakout over Donald Trump and especially his insistence that he will ban Muslims from the United States continues apace. Steven Hayward summed it up nicely at Powerline.

But let’s face it: the institution with the most at stake in Trump’s continued success is . . . the media. Here’s a not so secret fact of modern journalism: covering presidential campaigns is really boring. Most leading candidates are fairly disciplined, and stick to a standard stump speech. They don’t make a lot of national news, with the exception of having to respond to events (or in this case, respond to Trump). If you’re covering Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio right now, you aren’t getting much broadcast airtime or front-page space. Covering Trump has to be the best thing since the invention of movable type: you never know what he’s going to say.  …

All he has to do to capture the news cycle is to pick up the phone and make some outrageous statement.

Our new Attorney General Loretta Lynch’s response to the San Bernardino massacre, was that she would be concerned about a rise of anti-Muslim rhetoric. Politically incorrect speech, which is of course, free speech —protected by the First Amendment. She later backed down. There were innumerable cries about Trump’s statement being totally unconstitutional, but several law professors specializing in First Amendment law explained carefully that we can legally forbid entry to anyone.

On the other hand, there is a religious test for refugees. In theory, as I understand it, a refugee is someone admitted above and beyond the quota for the year on the basis that they face persecution and danger in their native country because of their religion. This is a real problem for Christians in the Middle East whose lives are threatened.

The suggestion that we might target Muslims is assumed to be a “hate crime”  largely by the Democratic Party.  Despite the liberal narrative, it is Jews, not Muslims who are the greatest victims of what the FBI calls religiously targeted hate crimes in America. 57% of anti-religious hate crimes targeted Jews, 16% targeted Muslims. Anti-Christian or anti-Protestant bias came in third at 8.6%.

The problem for the West seems to be Sharia Law, handed down by the Prophet as rules that govern every aspect of life for believing Muslims. We speak of “radical Islam” but that seems to mean only that adherents are expected to follow its tenets to the letter. The penalty for rejecting Islam is death. The penalty for speaking any words that can be interpreted as critical of the Prophet is death. Those who are “not radicalized” feel that the passage of centuries has perhaps changed or  modified things somewhat, or has it?

Others say that Islam is not a religion but an ideology. Osama bin Laden was radicalized by the work of Sayud Qtub who came to believe that the misfortunes facing Muslims were because Allah had turned his face away from Muslims because the people had not followed Shariah closely enough, and failed to eliminate those who would not submit.

British police have come forward to say that Trump is right because Muslim areas of Britain are “so radicalized” they are no-go areas. While we debate Trump’s statements, France has closed three mosques, in which they found hundreds of weapons. Nine people have been arrested and another 22 have been banned. They have also kicked in the doors of 2,235 homes and taken 232 people into custody or placed them  under house arrest.

From The Daily Mail: ISIS army of scientists set to wage chemical and biological war on the West. They claim to have already smuggled weapons of mass destruction into the European Union. The terror organization has recruited experts with chemistry, physics and Computer science degrees to wage war with future attacks.

Obama said that America must enlist Muslim communities to combat terrorism. Former FBI Counterterrorism Agent John Guandolo said that since 9/11, “we collectively have received nearly zero help from the Muslim community,” In the Wall Street Journal Yesterday, Khurram Dara, an attorney and author of The Crescent Directive and Contracting Fear wrote that “after San Bernardino, American Muslims have to come to terms with an ever more apparent truth; that we and our mainstream Muslim brethren, are the only ones who can lead a winning fight against the radicalism crippling our faith.”

This is all a deep and troubling conundrum, and worth far more study and thought than a would-be politician popping off to get the day’s most notable news bite.

Carly Fiorina Can Take Care of Herself! by The Elephant's Child

Among  his many intemperate remarks, Donald Trump chose to insult Carly Fiorina. Why not, he’s turned his insults on everybody else. He said something to the effect of “Look at that face. Could you vote for somebody with a face like that for president?” This may not be completely correct as I’m not looking it up. But never mind, Carly can take care of herself.

Smart commercial, and really puts the Donald in his place. Can you imagine having Trump as president, insulting our allies around the world, and remarking on how stupid other world leaders are?

Big Complex Problems Aren’t Usually Solved with Quick and Simple Answers by The Elephant's Child

140403_042214_oim_d504_246_0Donald Trump has put the immigration issue back on top of the table by recognizing just how angry Americans are at Obama’s executive rewrite of our immigration laws all on his own. The images of trainloads of Central American illegal immigrants riding on top of box cars, of tattooed members of Mara Salvatrucha gangs among the illegals, quarantines of hundreds of young illegals are bad enough, but when American citizens are murdered by illegals who have been deported several times, but go to sanctuary cities to avoid being deported again, it’s just too much.

The Obama administration, again by “executive authority” has sent the flood of illegals all over the country, including Alaska and Hawaii, presumably to register them to vote in the next election. To remind Obama-shoes-3them who let them in, they passed out Obama shoes, with an image of Obama printed inside.

Trump said “A nation without borders is not a nation, There must be a wall across the southern border.” The border is 2,000 miles long. The Israeli border fence has sensors and the IDF can be there in minutes. The Egyptians are building a fence in three layers including trenches and all sorts of sensors. I think it’s the Bulgarians (though that’s from a faulty memory) that have put up a 3-layer, very tall razor-wire fence that so far no one has breached. Europe is overcome with refugees from the murderous chaos in the Middle East. Australia’s coast guard makes it clear that no one is going to land in Australia uninvited.

It’s not that simple. The Fourteenth Amendment has been deemed by the courts to decree that any child born in the United States is automatically a citizen. The Immigration crowd cries that any objection to “anchor babies” is racist. In the winter of 2013, Russian Billionaire Roman Abramovich brought Eclipse, his 533 feet long, 13,000 ton, billion dollar  yacht into a dock at Manhattan’s pier 90 for what turned out to be a 3-month-long stay. In early April, Darya Zhukova, Abramovich’s girl friend gave birth to a girl named Leah. The cost of their stay has been estimated at $500,000 a week, to give the child an American birth certificate, as her older sister also has.

There are 4,422,660 people on the legal immigrant visa waiting list, according to the State Department’s annual tally. This is 100,000 more than at the same time last year. Ninety-eight percent of those waiting have been sponsored by a U.S. family member. This list does not include those already in the country who are waiting to adjust from a legal temporary status to a green card. The waiting lists are needed because the number of immigrants who can be admitted in certain family and employment categories, and because of caps on the number who can come from each country. The waiting time in the families category varies from 19 months to 33 years.

Manufacturing is not in decline. We are manufacturing more than ever, but we are doing it with fewer people (think robots and computers) which are responsible for big productivity gains. Don’t blame China or Mexico for job-losses. According to the San Francisco Fed the total share of “made in China” goods in U.S. household consumption is just 1.9 percent.

DHS has been releasing illegal immigrants with violent criminal records back into local U.S. communities, where they have often committed violent crimes. Rep, Matt Salmon  (R-AZ) and law enforcement officials have petitioned the Obama administration on Wednesday to stop freeing violent criminals who are in our country illegally. There has been the beating of a 7-week old baby, and the immolation of a person.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement under current law can no longer legally hold the three individuals,” ICE press secretary Gillian Christensen said. “To further promote public safety and transparency, ICE notified local law enforcement agencies of the release of the individuals.”

In 2013, ICE freed 36,007 illegal aliens with criminal convictions across the nation, according to statistics compiled by Arizona law enforcement. At least 193 of those aliens released were convicted of homicides, 426 were convicted of sex crimes, and 303 convicted of kidnapping.

Trump says it’s a big problem, and he will fix it. He does not mention how this will be done, or talk about the complexity of the problems. But calling attention to the immigration problems will help to expose what the Obama administration is currently doing.

The Encounter Between 9 Serious Men and One Large Ego. by The Elephant's Child

Donald_Trump__3158264bThe subject of the day is the debates, and Donald Trump. He does seem to suck all of the air out of the room.

My father would have described him with a rather old-fashioned word, “blowhard.” His candidacy can be summed-up as — I am Trump, I am very famous and very rich and you should vote for me.

Trump popped up just in time for the Republican Debates, loudly punching what is a hot button for many on the Right,  President Obama’s personal repeal, on his own “executive authority,” of the United States of America’s immigration laws. They have watched the trains with hundreds of illegals on top of the boxcars, they have watched them arrive, be sent all over the United States, and are inclined to blame it on Mexico.

Trump bellowed that he would build a big wall, a gigantic wall and make Mexico pay for it, and he might put in a big door for legal immigrants. Voilá, problem solved. Except it’s a shallow and superficial answer. Most of the immigrants have not been Mexican. It’s absurd to suggest that the Mexican government would pay for it.

It’s a huge and real problem, and nobody seems to know how to deal with it except to say that we must reform our immigration laws. Democrats want more Democrat voters, and their goal is to get them all registered to vote as quickly as possible. But this is not a column about immigration, but about Trump. He makes no serious effort in behalf of any issue, nor seems to have the discipline to master an issue.

Asked about ruling out a third-party run, he said if you nominate somebody I respect, then maybe he won’t. That sounds like somebody who has only been a Republican for the last few minutes.

(That’s not a nice picture, but I couldn’t resist. People always wonder — ‘What’s with the hair?’)

The Quote of the Week! by The Elephant's Child

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) went to New Hampshire this last week, and called for proof of Donald Trump’s Republican registration.   Really funny in the context of Trump’s calls for Obama to release his birth certificate.  Paul said:

I’ve come to New Hampshire today because I’m very concerned.  I want to see the original long-form certificate of Donald Trump’s Republican registration.

Embarrassingly, there is less evidence that Trump is a long time Republican than there is that Barack Obama was born in Hawaii.  Perhaps this will be the end of the silly ‘birther’ theme.  Trump, on the other hand was a registered Democrat as recently as 2009.

Apparently now, Trump is in a desperate search for Obama’s grades.  We have slaughter in Syria, both Trump and Obama are uninterested. Libya is a mess that Obama can’t manage to be concerned about.  Obama has suggested that the unsettled Arab countries should pump more oil to reduce our cost of gas, and Trump is concerned about Obama’s grades many years ago when he was in college?

I guess some people admire Trump because he is “taking on” Obama. I don’t get it. I’d like to see the long form of his Republican registration too.
