Democrats Vote to Raise Cost of Gas and Food! by American Elephant

Democrats Vote to Raise Cost of Gas and Food!

The law of supply and demand really is very simple. The price of any good or service is determined by how much people want it and how available it is. The more available it is, the less it will cost; the less available, the more it will cost.

The price of oil, for example, is skyrocketing because demand is skyrocketing. As trade is raising the standard of living in countries like China and India, more people are using more energy, so the demand increases and the price goes with it.

Republicans understand this.

That is why when Republicans were in charge they offered tax-breaks to oil companies if they would do certain things to increase the supply of oil and gasoline.

Democrats either don’t understand the law of supply and demand, or they simply don’t care. I suspect its a combination of the two.

Democrats have just passed another “energy” bill that does absolutely nothing to increase the supply of energy or bring the prices of energy down. On the contrary, they have voted to raise taxes on oil companies and take away the incentives to increase supply.

This means the price of gas will go up as oil companies pass their increased tax burden on to the consumer, and will go up even more as they scale back their efforts to increase supply.

Democrats did this despite the news that gas prices could reach $4 per gallon in some places next summer because of the increasing demand on crude oil. Lets be clear about that, the increased costs Democrats voted for would be on top of the $4/gallon price.

But the stupidity of the bill doesn’t end there.

The Democrats’ bill would also increase subsidies for ethanol and other “biofuels”. The problem with this (well, there are many problems with this), but the biggest problem is that when government creates artificial demand for ethanol, then the companies that make ethanol increase the demand for corn (which is used to make ethanol).

So, the price of corn goes up.

Not only does this raise the price of foods made from corn — i.e. cereals, tortillas, etc. But animals also eat corn. So the price goes up on chicken, eggs, milk, beef, you name it.

Virtually all the inflation you’ve noticed at the supermarket can be attributed to the increased cost of oil and the increased cost of corn because of “biofuel” subsidies. And Democrats just voted to increase the cost of both gas and groceries even more.

But the stupidity doesn’t end there!

The new taxes on oil companies only apply to domestic oil companies. Which means this bill will lower the amount of oil and gas we produce ourselves, and increase our dependence on foreign oil!

Plus, ethanol and other “biofuels” cost more to produce than oil, require far more land to produce than oil (it would take every single acre of farmland in the United States plus another 50 percent to make enough ethanol to replace oil), take far more energy to produce than oil, and deliver far less energy than oil. All of which means “biofuels” are actually worse for the planet!

Keep all this in mind when President Bush vetoes the bill. No doubt Democrats will demonize him for doing so, but they will be lying, as usual.

New Data Puts “Global Warming” On Ice by American Elephant

Penguins Take Over the World

The Earth warmed a tiny bit, in the recent past — for a while. This much we know (assuming measurements are accurate), but pretty much everything else “global warming” proponents claim is a mixture of theory and completely debunked horsehockey.

We do know that the Earth has warmed. Indeed, it has a long history of warming and cooling — but we do not know that the Earth will continue to warm. Environmentalists thought we knew. Al Gore tells us it is “scientific consensus” and therefore beyond debate. Unfortunately for Al, as with flat-Earth and geocentric theories, facts often have a pesky tendency to prove scientific consensus not only wrong, but meaningless.

Last December, a new study was published in the Royal Meteorological Society’s International Journal of Climatology to deafening media silence, that proves the computer models, upon which scientists are basing all their predictions of warming, do not work. When they entered in historic climate data — measurements from the past that we know to be accurate — the computer models completely failed to predict today’s current climate conditions. If they can’t predict the present, they most certainly can’t predict the future.

So now we are back to square one. We don’t know if the Earth will continue to warm, or if it will stay the same, or if it will get cooler.

But there are some new facts that you should bear in mind.

First, the globe hasn’t warmed since 2000. Contrary to environmentalists’ claims, global temperature has remained pretty much the same since 2001.

Secondly, the polar ice-caps are not disappearing as Al Gore told us. Not only has the Arctic ice-cap returned to its previous size, and is actually thicker than before, the antarctic ice cap is nearly one-third bigger than normal! So you can quit losing sleep worrying about penguins and polar bears.

Also, new data from the U.S. National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) confirms that, like much of the rest of the hemisphere, this winter has been colder than normal:

Snow cover over North America and much of Siberia, Mongolia and China is greater than at any time since 1966.

The U.S. National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) reported that many American cities and towns suffered record cold temperatures in January and early February. According to the NCDC, the average temperature in January “was -0.3 F cooler than the 1901-2000 (20th century) average.”

China is surviving its most brutal winter in a century. Temperatures in the normally balmy south were so low for so long that some middle-sized cities went days and even weeks without electricity because once power lines had toppled it was too cold or too icy to repair them.

There have been so many snow and ice storms in Ontario and Quebec in the past two months that the real estate market has felt the pinch as home buyers have stayed home rather than venturing out looking for new houses.

In just the first two weeks of February, Toronto received 70 cm of snow, smashing the record of 66.6 cm for the entire month set back in the pre-SUV, pre-Kyoto, pre-carbon footprint days of 1950. [read more]

Now, as the article states, one winter does not a trend make. But it is important to note that this years’ unusually cold winter, and the lack of any significant warming over the past seven years, fly in the face of everything Al Gore and the envirowhackos have been telling us.

And an increasingly large number of scientists are standing up and questioning the global warming mantra,

Last month, Oleg Sorokhtin, a fellow of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, shrugged off manmade climate change as “a drop in the bucket.” Showing that solar activity has entered an inactive phase, Prof. Sorokhtin advised people to “stock up on fur coats.”

He is not alone. Kenneth Tapping of our own [Canadian] National Research Council, who oversees a giant radio telescope focused on the sun, is convinced we are in for a long period of severely cold weather if sunspot activity does not pick up soon.

Don’t believe the hype. As we said last week, “It’s the Sun, Stupid!” The Earth is warming for the same reasons Mars and other planets have been shown to be simultaneously warming: the Sun does not always put out a constant amount of energy. It goes through phases of increased and decreased activity.

The idea that the Earth is going to continue to warm is not only an unproven theory, but much of what it is based on has been proven to be untrue. Not only has Earth not warmed in over 7 years, this winter has been the coldest in a long while. And as many scientists have postulated, we may be in for, or already in, a period of global cooling.

I wonder if environmentalists will insist we drive more SUVs? Somehow I doubt it.

Polar Bears

File this one under more news you won’t hear from the mainstream media:

NEW evidence has cast doubt on claims that the world’s ice-caps are melting, it emerged last night.

Satellite data shows that concerns over the levels of sea ice may have been premature.

It was feared that the polar caps were vanishing because of the effects of global warming.

But figures from the respected US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration show that almost all the “lost” ice has come back.

Ice levels which had shrunk from 13million sq km in January 2007 to just four million in October, are almost back to their original levels.[read more]

Another envirowhacko scare tactic falls apart. The ice caps are not disappearing. In fact, while the arctic ice cap returns to normal, the antarctic ice cap is increasing in size:

Figures show that there is nearly a third more ice in Antarctica than is usual for the time of year.

This just weeks after another scientific study determined that the “models” environmentalists have been basing all their predictions on, can’t even accurately predict the current climate… which  means they can’t predict anything.

But you probably didn’t hear that one from the mainstream media either. And you won’t.

Environmentalists: loving Nature to death by The Elephant's Child

Baby Orangutan and Baby Tiger Rescued in Indonesia

Al Gore has managed to scare the bureaucrats with his global warming hysteria. Ordinary people are a bit more dubious — with good reason. Legislators, city councilmen, members of congress are rushing to be seen as leaders in the fight to stop global warming. Aside from changing their light bulbs, recycling, and perhaps buying a Prius (just wait til they find out how much those new batteries cost) what can an individual do?

If you are a bureaucrat, and there’s a good fad handy, you regulate it.

According to the European Union’s climate change goals, two percent of all diesel must be vegetable oil, rising to 5.7% in 2010 and 10 percent by 2020. This makes the demand for palm oil, which is used in bio-diesel, guaranteed to increase.

This demand is met to a great extent by clear-cutting rain forests in Indonesia, to make way for palm oil plantations. As the rainforests disappear, the great apes — the orangutan — starve. They are hunted, burnt, and mutilated by workers trying to protect their crops. A charity, Borneo Orangutan Survival, now has more than 600 mostly orphaned orangutan babies. The center director estimates that they are rescuing only one-fifth of the apes. (Remember, conversely, the reason for not drilling in ANWR is supposedly to avoid annoying the caribou.)

In Europe, due to poor planning, there seems to be a shortage in the years’ grain crop. Last years’ was sold off, and land that was expected to be available has been turned over to production of bio-diesel and other industrial uses. Prices are soaring.

The fact is that there is not enough farmland in cultivation to fill both the world’s stomachs and the world’s gas tanks. There are dreams and there are pipe-dreams. It’s not always easy to tell the difference.

The EU has announced a tax of more than $70 for each return trip airfare, a tax on jet fuel for flights within the EU — doubling the cost of many budget airline flights in the belief that aviation is the fastest growing source for “greenhouse gasses.”

Naturally, all this is happening just as the case for man-made global warming is beginning to crumble. Can we regain a little common sense before environmentalists have destroyed too much woodland and wildlife?

Who would have thought? by The Elephant's Child

City councils can be really ridiculous.

You would expect people to run for the office of city councilperson because they care about the running of the city, potholes and such, but no-oo. Apparently many serve on a city council because they want to change the world, or practice foreign affairs or just play politics.

Professor James Q. Wilson sent the following summary of an article in the Los Angeles Times to Powerline :

On August 26, 2007, the Los Angeles Times published an article explaining why the city council of Santa Barbara has been prevented from painting a blue line across the city to mark how high the water will be if you believe Al Gore’s prediction that global warming will make the oceans rise by 23 feet. The idea was not defeated because people realize that Gore’s prediction is silly and wrong, but because a Realtor threatened a law suit based on the argument that property values below the line would fall.

Bush ends global warming! by American Elephant

Stop the presses! Wake Al Gore! Notify the media!

The greatest threat to mankind is no more, and they seem to have missed the story. No, I’m not talking about a nuclear Iran or WMD in the hands of terrorists, don’t be silly…

Global Warming

Everyone knows the greatest threat to life on Earth is global warming! Imminent apocalyptic catastrophes that are certain to result from an almost immeasurable increase in the 0.03 percent of the atmosphere that is carbon dioxide.

At least it was…

But recently the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration quietly told us that global warming has stopped!

Looking at annual global temperatures, it is apparent that the last decade shows no warming trend and recent successive annual global temperatures are well within each year’s measurement errors. Statistically the world’s temperature is flat.

The world certainly warmed between 1975 and 1998, but in the past 10 years it has not been increasing at the rate it did. No scientist could honestly look at global temperatures over the past decade and see a rising curve.

So, not only has the past decade not shown any of the catastrophic warming that’s kept the inventor of the internet up at night, it hasnt warmed at all.

And now comes more good news, NASA has just confirmed that the past decade has not experienced the hottest years on record at all—as we have all been told—but that the hottest year on record was actually 1934, with 1931 and 1917 not far behind.

So it seems great celebration is in order. Perhaps the Earth was warming dangerously during the inconvenient Al’s tenure, but science seems to confirm that President George W. Bush has stopped global warming in its tracks!

Someone should really tell Al. I’m sure he’d want to know.
