Guns and Gun Violence, In Gun Controlled Chicago. by The Elephant's Child

Democrats learn from each other, and from approved leftist publications, and from Democrat talking points and late night comedians, I think. They do not seem to learn from evidence.

“As of November 23, there had been 2,703 shootings which resulted in 440 deaths year-to-date in heavily gun-controlled Chicago,” according to AWR Hawkins, writing in Breitbart.  That is an increase, he said, of approximately 400 shootings over the same time last year.

The Chicago Tribune reported these numbers as part of their broader coverage of the 11 people shot, five killed, over the course of last weekend alone. Half of those wounded were shot on November 22 “between about 12:25 p.m. and 8:40 p.m.” Three of those killed were shot on that same day, between those same hours as well.

It is especially notable that gun control laws have little to do with actual gun violence. Lefties always believe that it’s the guns, not the gangs. It’s the guns, not the drug dealing. And the violence is, of course, to be blamed on bad policing. Because there is gun violence and bad policing, the assumption is that people who are in prison for “non-violent crimes” should be released, because it isn’t fair. I am inclined to believe that selling drugs is a violent crime. At least it does violence to someone else’s life.

Chicago established a “violence tax” at suburban Cook County gun stores in April 2013. The tax is levied on each gun and bullet sold within the county. In 2014, the first full year after the tax, gun deaths increased by 19 over the toll in 2013. As if November 23rd, the Tribune shows 440 deaths with over a month left to go, so  Chicago has already topped 2014, and who knows what December will bring.

Evidence be damned. The Seattle City Council adopted a similar tax on August 10. Gun violence is raging in Seattle, but to the Democrat run  city council the problem is the guns, or the bullets, not who is holding or shooting the weapon. Seattle has suburbs all around the city, and they haven’t, and probably won’t, initiate such a tax. Seattle is similar to Berkeley, with a similarly useless city council.

You can look all around the world, and gun control laws simply do not work. See Australia, Britain, Canada for example.

America has lots of hunters. There are, as of 2011, 10.6 million deer hunters, 1.4 million duck hunters, 3.1 million turkey hunters, and 1.7 million squirrel hunters. Then we have elk, quail, grouse, goose, bear, pronghorn, bighorn sheep and wild pig and other species that are available to hunt in some locations. Where I grew up, a lot of families depended on the fall hunting trip for deer or elk to fill the freezer to get through the winter. Hunters are responsible gun owners and users for the most part, and many of them have several guns.

Criminals are not, but they don’t buy their weapons at gun stores, nor do they pay a tax on each bullet. The police take a very risky job because they believe in keeping the public safe. The “Black Lives Matter” crowd is doing a lot of uncalled for damage to neighborhood policing.

That is not a gun at the top.  It is simply a picture of a hunting rifle.

A Few Wednesday Short-Takes to Make You Indignant! by The Elephant's Child

The Defense Department has classified the Fort Hood massacre as “workplace violence.” Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) blasted the Defense Department and suggested that political correctness is being placed above the security of the nation’s Armed Forces at home.Thirteen people were killed and dozens more wounded at Fort Hood in an act of terrorism by radical Islam. “Workplace violence,” indeed.

Major Nidal Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist was allegedly inspired by radical U.S. born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki who was killed in an American  drone strike in Yemen  in late September. Members of the American military are increasingly targets of terrorists, not only on the battlefield, but here at home.

— Suspicions that the “Fast and Furious”operation by the ATF division of the Justice Department was intended to argue for controversial and stringent rules on gun ownership, seems to be true.  Emails obtained by CBS News show that the illegal gun sales they ordered gun dealers to make, were intended to justify a new regulation called “Demand Letter 3″ which would require gun dealers to report the sale of multiple rifles. It would be the third ATF program requiring dealers to report tracing information.

Gun dealers who cooperated with ATF did it only because they were asked to by the U.S. Government, something that was against their own best judgment. ATF claimed to be tracking the guns, but that went out of control, and ended with the death of a Border Control agent. Reluctant dealers were afraid that their cooperation with ATF would lead to trouble for themselves.” Fast and Furious” went far beyond Congressional authorization. The Justice department declines to comment.

— Obama’s speech in Osawatomie made a strong case for more governmental oversight of you, not of the government.  “For the first time in history, the reform we passed puts in place a consumer watchdog who is charged with protecting everyday Americans from being taken advantage of by mortgage lenders, payday lenders or debt collectors….Every day we go without a consumer watchdog in place is another day when a student, or a senior citizen, or a member of our Armed Forces could be tricked into a loan they can’t afford—something that happens all the time.”

Doesn’t that drip with elite condescension? You poor dumb boobs can’t manage your finances without the help of a wise governmental watchdog.  I have read that the Obama’s were deeply in debt until “the money from the book came in.” I thought the way most people learned to manage money was to make a purchase that they couldn’t really afford and had to take the consequences. If someone cheats me, it’s my fault for allowing it to happen, and a lesson is learned. But nevermind, you won’t have to learn any lessons, you will have nanny government to protect you.  Not just a nanny, but someone with nearly unlimited and undefined powers.

— The NAACP is so concerned that black and Hispanic Americans could lose the right to vote if they are required to show identification at the polls to prove that they are a resident and a citizen, that they have petitioned the United Nations over what they call an effort to disenfranchise black and Hispanic people. So the new civil right is — never having to prove that you are who you claim to be. Because people bussed in from a neighboring state and illegal residents might not be able to vote if they have to show their driver’s license or other proof of citizenship?

I have to show my driver’s license every time I write a check. I have to identify myself that way at the bank, to get an airplane ticket, and for so many other occasions that it is so normal that I don’t give it a thought. Asking people to identify themselves at the polls is an attempt to suppress the votes of black citizens? The NAACP sees this as a cynical attempt to suppress a surge in ethnic minority voting in 2008, so they are appealing to the UN to get more publicity. William Barber, a member of the association’s national board, said it was the “most vicious, coordinated and sinister attack to narrow participation in our democracy since the early 20th century”. Part of the campaign by the NAACP is to eliminate laws that prevent felons from voting, and of course they don’t believe that it’s necessary for one to be a citizen in order to vote either.
