The Kavanaugh Affair, Continued… by The Elephant's Child

From Victor Davis Hanson:

Just when observers had concluded the desperate progressive opposition to Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court could not stoop much lower, it most certainly did.

Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), in the news recently for somehow unknowingly employing a Chinese spy as her gofer and chauffeur for 20 years, passed on information to federal investigators that weeks ago had come to her attention from an unnamed, unidentified, and anonymous female who claimed she was a high school acquaintance of Kavanaugh’s. Apparently, we were to believe that the once-anonymous informant had harbored a long-simmering, but heretofore never-voiced complaint of sexual assault against Kavanaugh, which coincidentally reached a peak of unsustainable resentment at the time of his nomination to the highest court in the land.

After days of gossip and innuendo to the effect that the likely next Supreme Court Justice might just be some sort of pervert, Anonymous finally came forward and identified herself as a victim of a then 17-year-old inebriated Brett Kavanaugh who (she says) sexually manhandled her in 1982 when she was 15. More specifically, the woman now alleges that Kavanaugh and another student at a high-school party entered a room inebriated, pinned her to a bed, and then groped her while she was clothed. Young Kavanaugh then allegedly attempted to take her clothes off her while he and his classmate, Mark Judge, both laughed “maniacally.” She adds that she had sought “medical treatment” for her unspecified injuries.

Here’s Paul Mirengoff ( a lawyer) at Powerline: “Another Kavanaugh Accuser Comes after Dem Lawyer Persuades Her She’s A Victim

Scott Johnson (also a lawyer) at Powerline adds:

Nevertheless, the Democrats may have achieved liftoff. According to FOX News, creepy porn lawyer Michael Avenatti has apparently let it be known #HeToo has a client waiting in the wings.

And here’s Steven Hayward, also at Powerline:  “I Told You So”

Steven Hayward adds his “Week in Pictures” which is all the jokes and cartoons of the week, this week mostly about the Kavanaugh affair. As he says, “there isn’t a black hole large enough to swallow up the liberal hypocrisy over this whole business.”

They started this thing off with a lengthy conversation about how if Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed to the Supreme Court , he would immediately ban legal abortions. Women everywhere had to rise up and get their congresspeople to dump Kavanaugh. Now, that Ms. Christine Blaney Ford has been identified as the accuser, and admits that her recollection is rather fuzzy at best, and needs protection from death threats (?) but her biggest accusation seems to be “groping” — the helpful media keeps referring to it as “rape” which nobody’s accused anybody about.

I seem to remember some Democrat, long ago, saying something about “you drag a hundred dollar bill through a trailer camp…”

My Summary of the Entire Kavanaugh Extravaganza by The Elephant's Child

FB-090617-Chuck-Schumer

The Kavanaugh nomination continues to dominate the news. Democrat propaganda efforts have seen to that. I don’t know just who does their propaganda, but they have become quite good at it. If you recall, with the women’s march, the bellyaching by feminists that they don’t yet occupy all the really important positions in the country, and of course, the #Me-Too movement, sexual abuse has become a big prominent deal.

Federal Judge Brett Kavanaugh has been nominated to the Supreme Court. Senator Charles Schumer has spoken out to say essentially that no, we cannot have a conservative or a Republican appointed to the Supreme Court, because Democrats have to be in the majority and in charge. As the time for Kavanaugh’s hearing approaches, lo and behold, at almost the very last minute Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) has a letter from a woman who claims that Brett Kavanaugh abused her when they were in high school 36 years ago. Senator Feinstein has had the letter since July, but just didn’t think of making it public until just before the Kavanaugh hearing, Purely a coincidence of course.

The woman is identified as Christine Basely Ford, a professor at Palo Alto University. She claims that at a party 36 years ago the high school boys were all drunk, Kavanaugh held her down and put his hand over her mouth, and she was very frightened. When was this? She can’t really remember. Well, where was this? She can’t remember where the party was. She can’t remember how she got home. Did she tell anyone? About 12 years ago when she and her husband were in couples counseling, she suddenly remembered and told the therapist. Palo Alto University is a college for psychology and counseling.

Chairman Grassley says they will arrange to hear her on Monday. She will not come on Monday. She wants the FBI to investigate the whole thing before she will testify, because she has received death threats and nasty calls. The FBI doesn’t do investigations to determine who is right in a he-said she-said argument. Women’s march feminists assume, with help from Democrat propagandists that she was raped, but she has never claimed that as far as can be determined. She says she won’t testify until she can be protected because she is very frightened — death threats. The question seems to be can she drag out the contretemps long enough to get the Kavanaugh  nomination dumped? Raise enough suspicions? Etc. Etc. Etc.

Kavanaugh is adamant that it never happened. His friend from high school also says it never happened. Many women who knew Kavanaugh in high school say Kavanaugh was always a perfect gentleman. Etc. Etc. Etc.

Hollywood celebrities, whose names I do not recognize, but I’m not very up-to-date, are quick to chime in and demand that Ford be given a hearing, #Me-Too, Etc. Etc. Etc. Why are we forced to listen to Hollywood celebrities who are famous because they once appeared on a screen somewhere, who know nothing whatsoever, but demand to be listened to because they once appeared on a screen somewhere? They have no claim to any expertise, they just like to sound off, and lazy reporters can just pick up what they said online.

That’s my best summary of what is happening. Let me know if my summary is haywire. The propaganda is skillful, the Democrats are deeply opposed to the Constitution and want it abolished, because it is a brake on their quest for control. They particularly hate the Electoral College, citizenship laws, free speech, the first and second amendments, and most of the rest of it as well. Obama used to say that the Constitution was wrong because it said what the government may not do, to the people, and it should have said what the government must do — for the people.

ADDENDUM: Here’s Breitbart’s timeline of events, far more comprehensive than mine. The Thursday date would apparently make it too late for Kavanaugh to be confirmed for the new court session, which begins October 1.   Democrats have again “suggested” that Clarence Thomas is a proven sexual predator, With the  Thursday date for testimony, the Democrats’ game is exposed. They are not nice people, and they play very dirty. And their goal is power and control.

Here’s Powerline’s list of Ms. Ford’s demands:

Citing “sources,” Fox News’ Shannon Bream reports on the demands Christine Blasey Ford and her legal team are making as a condition for her testifying about her allegations against Brett Kavanaugh:

Ford team wants NO questions from lawyers, only Qs from Committee members, #Kavanaugh cannot be in the room, Kavanaugh must testify FIRST – more to come …

These demands are absurd. No questions from lawyers? I guess Ford wants to be able to claim she’s being persecuted by an all-white-male panel. She doesn’t want a woman to examine her, which I imagine is what the Republicans have in mind.

ADDENDUM II

Senate Judiciary Committee Chuck Grassley (R-IA) set a final deadline today for Judge Brett Kavanaugh accuser Christine Blasey Ford’s lawyers to agree to have her testify at a hearing next week.  If Ford’s lawyers do not reach an agreement to one of the options they have been offered, Grassley will schedule a committee vote on Kavanaugh for Monday.

The First Day of Kavanaugh Hearings, and Democrats Embarrass Themselves. by The Elephant's Child

Today is the first day of the hearings on the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to be a Justice of the Supreme Court. Why are we not surprised to learn that Democrats plotted to disrupt the Kavanaugh hearing? Dick Durbin admitted that Democrats plotted over the weekend during a conference call by Charles Schumer on how to use protests and interruptions to disrupt the hearings.  Democrats obligingly threw a tantrum, interrupting the proceedings 62 times without waiting for proper recognition from the chair, speaking out of turn. Dianne Feinstein  claimed that “More people will die in mass shootings if Brett Kavanaugh gets confirmed.” Which is a remarkably silly statement.

The usual Hollywood far-lefties screeched and demonstrated clearly that they have no understanding whatsoever of the Supreme Court, the job of the justices, and how the law works. They also don’t seem to grasp the idea that their big mouths and embarrassing behavior has meant that a lot of Americans have quit watching current Hollywood movies in favor of  British movies, or old or even silent movies instead. Some of us read instead, and a good book beats another car chase easily.

The Supreme Court chooses what cases put before the court that they will hear. It’s cases that cannot be solved successfully by a lower court. If Judge Kavanaugh were an ardent opponent of abortion or a passionate member of the NRA (he’s not) he would have to recuse himself. And he would have to wait for a difficult case that suggested that Roe v. Wade was somehow improperly decided. The idea that a conservative justice threatens laws that the Left holds dear is not only silly, but demonstrates ignorance of our independent judiciary. It has long been clear that Democrats are poorly informed about just how our Constitutional Republic is supposed to work. When you are opposed to Capitalism, that goes with the territory.

Brett Kavanaugh is an outstanding nomination to the Supreme Court. He has a long record of carefully conceived decisions, some of which the Supreme Court has referred to in their decisions. The American Bar Association has recommended him highly. The Democrats have investigated him, every case he has ruled on, they have examined his wife’s emails and decisions as a town manager of the small incorporated city where they live (one restaurant). Before they were married, she served as personal secretary to President George W. Bush, and was a personal assistant while he was Governor of Texas. The Bushes attended the Kavanaugh wedding. Having found no dirt so far, Democrats want the record of every moment that Kavanaugh was part of the Bush administration. He may well be the best qualified nominee ever to appear before Congress.

Kamala Harris (clearly running for the Democrat’s nomination for President) made a fool of herself with interruptions and ill-informed statements.

President Trump Goes to Brussels. Gets Promises. We’ll See. by The Elephant's Child

President Trump nominated Judge Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court, and the Democrats immediately fell apart. Terry McAuliffe claimed “the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh will threaten the lives of millions of Americans for decades to come”. DNC Chairman Tom Perez said “[Y]ou better believe that with Brett Kavanaugh on the bench, Roe v. Wade, affordable health care, labor unions, and civil rights will all be on the chopping block.” Well, no. The Supreme Court decides when a case is referred to them, whether it is or is not constitutional.

“Comedienne” Michelle Wolf said “God Bless Abortion” She stated ‘Look, access to abortion is good and important. Some people say abortion is ‘killing a baby.’ It’s not. It’s stopping a baby from happening. It’s like ‘Back to the Future’ and abortion is the DeLorean. And everyone loves DeLoreans.’”

No Michelle, abortion is not stopping a baby from happening. Birth Control is stopping a baby from happening, or abstinence, or not getting drunk, or just saying ‘no’, or keeping your clothes on. Abortion is not women’s health care, and you dumped your right to choose when you chose to get pregnant. But that’s just my opinion.

Then Donald Trump met with the other heads of NATO in Brussels, and suggested that European members were not meeting their own commitments to the defense expenditures supporting the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. President Trump mentioned that Germany was the richest country in Europe, and has just signed on with the Russians (from whom NATO is supposed to protect Europe) for very expensive supplies of Russian gas. And that German dependence on Russian Gas poses a major security threat to the West. It harks back to the time when the Soviet Union saw the growing green movement as the perfect way to undermine their enemies in the free West.

The United States defense spending for the security of the European countries is more than double what all the other NATO members spend, combined, on defense. U.S defense spending accounts for 72% of NATO’s total defense spending.  Click to enlarge.

Yes, we are a bigger and richer country, and can afford to pay more. We are not threatening the survival of the world. There are only five out of 29 countries that have met their commitment. We are paying for their defense, and losing billions on trade as well. NATO pledged to boost defense spending. From journalist Caroline Glick:

NATO was established in 1949. It was the second major organization, after the United Nations, which was formed in the aftermath of World War II. Like the U.N., NATO was envisioned as a means to secure the peace in the post-war era.

To a significant degree, NATO was established because the U.N. was not up to the task. At the outset of World War II, then-President Franklin Delano Roosevelt envisioned the establishment of an organization whose goal would be to preserve the peace that would be secured through an Allied victory. Its establishment was agreed to by the key World War II Allies — the U.S., the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and the Republic of China.

NATO was established because the U.N. was incapable of handling the actual strategic environment dominated by the Cold War. And they were successful, for the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. NATO intervened in the Yugoslavian civil war, twice. Now there is Turkey, increasingly hostile as Erdogan secures his dictatorship. What is lacking in all of NATO’s interventions has been a common sense of strategic purpose. France, Germany and Britain are working through the EU to preserve the Iranian nuclear deal from 2015, which did nothing to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Turkey’s achievement has been in preventing the alliance from moving to combat or defeat  the new common foe of all members but Turkey—radical Islam.

Times change and governments change and a common sense of strategic purpose becomes ever more distant. But no, Democrats. Trump is not attacking NATO, nor dissolving alliances, nor destroying the world. He’s actually doing a pretty good job. Grow up and try to recognize the real problems we face in an ever-changing world.

NATO countries agreed at a summit in Wales in 2014 to spend 2 percent of their gross domestic product on defense annually within ten years. Germany is spending 1.2 % of GDP on defense. It is promising to get to 1.5% by 2025. Rich Lowry notes that “the country should have been embarrassed after German troops—Panzergenadierbataillon 371, to be exact—had to use broomsticks instead of guns in a NATO exercise in 2014. But Germany evidently doesn’t embarrass easily.” German is the biggest economy in Europe and 4th largest in the world. Their aircraft have missing spare parts and many can’t fly. Tanks are not battle ready. And broomsticks instead of guns will not do.

President Trump Once Again Fulfills his Promise by The Elephant's Child

President Trump has nominated Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court to replace the retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy. Judge Kavanaugh has served for 12 years on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, and has written more than 300 opinions that involve every significant constitutional issue including separation of powers and federalism. The Supreme Court has adopted the logic of 11 of his opinions in whole or in part. He is among a younger generation of judges who base their rulings on the text of the Constitution and Congressional statute. He has the experience and intellect to be a leader on the Court, rather than a predictable vote on an issue.

Naturally, the Left has erupted with the usual silliness. Kavanaugh will end Roe v. Wade, put gay men in jail, and whatever else they can come up with.  That’s not how the Supreme Court operates. They are the court of last resort whose duty is to apply and defend the United States Constitution to the particular case before them. Mr. Trump promised to select a Justice “who will faithfully interpret the Constitution as written,” and that is just what he has done.  Judge Kavanaugh has a record that suggests that he will help to restore the Supreme Court to its proper, more modest role in American politics and American society.

The serious and thoughtful men who wrote and adopted the U.S. Constitution were intent on preserving the freedoms and rights that the country had just fought a long bloody war about. They recognized the imperfect nature of mankind and how easily freedom could be lost to bad ideas. And we always have a remarkable quantity of bad ideas in our society as in any society.

The hard Left just won an election in a safe Democratic district with a young “Democratic Socialist” who is remarkably free from any knowledge of history, politics or international affairs. Dumb as a post. And she tried to palm herself off as just a girl from the Bronx, not. She left the Bronx as a small child and grew up in a tony Westchester suburb with her successful well-to-do architect father. But she had the Hispanic name for a district that is largely Hispanic

Here’s the Wall Street Journal’s take on Judge Kavanaugh, and here is John Hinderaker at Powerline.
