Europe Has an Important Lesson For Us. We Must Pay Attention. by The Elephant's Child

(This is mostly a post from around this time last year, but it bears repeating. Informed by Charles Hill who is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution. He was a career minister in the US Foreign Service, received every award available to career ministers, and was executive aide to former Secretary of State George P. Schultz.)

We’re having some trouble with definitions, and throwing way too many “isms” around:  nationalism and nativism, for example. The Left, big on wide open borders, prefers to define nativism as something evil, as if favoring your own citizens over illegal immigrants is reprehensible? Look up the definition of nativism. Other troublesome words are bigotry, prejudice, civility and incivility, and immigrant and migrant. ABC recently called illegal aliens (illegal: not according to law, alien: owing allegiance to some other nation) to avoid using such negative language, “undocumented citizens.” No, they’re not.

We are living in a time when the difference between undocumented citizens, immigrants and migrants is increasingly important. Europe, because of their cradle-to-grave social welfare benefits, has a declining birthrate. Because they have a declining birthrate, without enough young people working to pay for the cradle-to-grave social welfare benefits they so generously offered in order to get elected, they thought by inviting more immigrants to work and pay for the benefits, they could still prosper. “Poor” Americans have more living space than ordinary Europeans who are not poor. And more amenities.

The inviting immigrants in was a mistake for Europeans. They were feeling sorry for those in Middle Eastern refugee camps, and the well-meant invitation quickly became a flow of migrants from every hell-hole on the planet, and many ordinary countries that just didn’t have the presumed wealth of Europe.

Charles Hill explained how modernity went astray, based on a system that made room for wide cultural diversity based on a judicial doctrine of “the equality of states.”      (Do read Hill’s whole piece linked just above. It’s not long.)

The EU would become a new form of trans-national entity that would eschew war, abolish sovereign borders, exalt diplomacy, and supersede the Westphalian system by offering the world a compelling model of how to dismantle the state by devolving some of its powers downward according to the concept of “subsidiarity” while pulling other powers up into a pan-European bureaucracy in Brussels which, however defined, would not be a state. The EU assured that it was entirely un-religious and noted the care with which the text of its voluminous constitution – unratified – avoided any reference to Europe’s Christian heritage.

Put simply, the EU made itself the epitome of the Modern Age by relentless secularization. Islamism, emerging from the post-World War I collapse of the Ottoman Empire and Caliphate, made itself the vanguard of jihadist religion’s rise to become the implacable adversary of modernity. If Europe is where the siege is to take place, the drawbridge already is up:

Today, November 2, 2018 we have three caravans of migrants who plan to force their way into the United States illegally, to get jobs so they can send money back to their homes in Central America. We have no idea what percentage of the caravans represents peaceful people who just want American jobs and American benefits on the taxpayers’ dime. That there are large numbers of criminals among them is a fact. El Salvador is the home of MS-13 – gangs that are terrorizing many American cities with violence, drugs, sex-trafficking, rape, and murder. It has been reported that there are many Bangladeshi’s among them, and Bangladesh is home to many ISIS gangs. We can learn from the mistakes of the European Union.

I’m not at all convinced that the Democrats are capable of learning or caring. They seem to care only about returning to power and control. See Nancy Pelosi.

If you go to Hoover. org, and enter – ‘publication’, Charles Hill has pieces at Caravans and at  Defining Ideas or just search under his name, and you will find many articles that clarify what’s going on in the world.                                                                                                                                                                 .

Caravan , March, Bands of Migrants, Invaders, Whatever by The Elephant's Child

Democrats are trying to romanticize the massive marches of Central Americans heading for our Southern Border, with the appellate “Caravans,” which does have a romantic sound. If Trump is going to declare war on these bands of migrants, then the Democrats are going to be for them. They had a great success with the “ripped from their mothers’ arms meme” when enough attention was called to the fact that existing law requires that children may not be detained with the parents who are detained. The fact that the children were well cared for and entertained was brushed aside with the “ripped” phrase. The Democrats work very hard to get just the right messaging out there. Republicans are not all that good at messaging, just at doing the right thing most of the time.

There’s much about the current bands of migrants that is as yet unknown. The Honduran official supposedly behind it is known, but there’s lots of help turning up to feed and shelter them, and help them on their way. The Left is still trying to emphasize the women and children part, and there are some, but the vast majority seem to be young men of working age, and what they want is paying jobs so they can send money home, and the benefits that go along with being “refugees.” Refugee status carries special privileges, and there are plenty of immigration attorneys to tell them the correct claims to make and words to say.

The first group which some are estimating well over 1,000 has broken through Mexico’s border. The Mexican government has offered asylum, and work, and some 1800 or so accepted, but the vast majority headed on. Someone is supplying trucks for transport. A second group has formed and has broken through the Mexican border fences, with a shooting, one migrant killed, and some violence. The second group comes from El Salvador, home of MS-13, the gang that is terrorizing some American cities.

There are many in the first large group who have been previously deported for a crime. Some of the marchers say that there are a lot of criminals among them. There are supposed to be a number of Bangladeshis among them as well, which is a home for ISIS. Now there is a third caravan forming out of Guatemala with several hundred migrants who hope to catch up to the big group. Certainly all take courage from their sheer numbers. Some local residents offer food or water. We’ve been told that they just invade local grocery stores and help themselves.

A Guatemalan government official told Judicial Watch that the caravan is a movement of radicalized forces to destabilize Central American countries. “It is very strategic and extremely organized. It is very complex, not a simple march. There is nothing spontaneous about it.”

Today, we are a living parody.  A massive parade of foreign nationals is marching toward our border, its members openly proclaiming that they intend to illegally enter our country.  They have already stormed and breached the southern border of Mexico in a glaring preview of their defiance of law, so they are clearly to be believed.

And where is the American political left?  Are leftists decrying the violation of our national sovereignty?  Are they demanding that our government protect its citizens from encroachment?  Of course not.  They are the parody.  They of the left are seeking ways in which to prevent the administration from doing any of that.

This is President Trump’s PATCO moment.  Remember that?  Soon after President Ronald Reagan took office, in 1981, members of the unionized left organized a strike of the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization.  They were adamant that their demands be met, or else PATCO would shut down all air traffic in the United States.  Reagan gave the union members 48 hours in which to return to work or be irrevocably fired.  You can’t do that, the striking controllers jeered.  Twenty-four hours later, they were all fired, and not one of those who continued the illegal strike has been rehired.  Shortly afterward, PATCO ceased to exist.

Victor Davis Hanson’s home is in an area of California that is home to large numbers of Mexican immigrants, legal and illegal, and his book Mexifornia is a valuable guide to understanding. Writing in the Washington Times, he said:

Or, as 17th-century British statesman George Savile famously put it: “Men are not hanged for stealing horses, but that horses may not be stolen.”

In the modern world, we call such prompt, uniform and guaranteed law enforcement “deterrence,” from the Latin verb meaning “to frighten away.” One protester who disrupts a speech is not the problem. But if unpunished, he green-lights hundreds more like him.

Worse still, when one law is left unenforced, then all sorts of other laws are weakened.

The result of hundreds of “sanctuary cities” is not just to forbid full immigration enforcement in particular jurisdictions. They also signal that U.S. immigration law, and by extension other laws, can be ignored.

So now we have three marches, one each from Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala. All seem to believe that by the sheer force of numbers, they can force their way into the United States and between our offerings of employment and free benefits get their way. You will have to admit that the timing with the election in just days is more than a bit suspicious. Before you start claiming that “we are a nation of immigrants” and should thus let them all in, please understand that worldwide there are approximately 4,060,046 people registered on the waiting list for visas to come to America legally. The list includes all countries with at least 50,000 persons on the waiting list. There is a seven percent per-country limit which issuance of visas to one single country may not exceed. For fiscal year 2018 the per-country limit will be 25,620. (Do click on the link. It’s 3 short paragraphs but explains the complications which are many.)

Obfuscating Language For Political Purposes by The Elephant's Child

Let’s clear up the language once more: I heard Rick Santorum speaking as a guest on a talk show today in opposition to the president’s plans for some kind of amnesty for “undocumented immigrants.” In his conversation, he referred several times to “native-born Americans.” I think it was a thoughtless use of that term to simply mean “citizens.” We also have many visitors, citizens of other countries, who are here as students, guest workers, or just tourists, all quite legally.

“Undocumented immigrants” is a catch-phrase from the leftist language workshop, designed to soften and confuse the designation of non-citizens here without permission, to ease the amnesty plan. You will also hear a lot of “innocent children,”and  “separating families.” This is simply political propaganda designed to advance a political agenda which is — increasing the numbers of people dependent on the government for their survival and well-being, who will reliably vote for the Democrats who made amnesty possible.

Merriam Webster Dictionary:

il·le·gal: not according to or authorized by law

alien: belonging to or owing allegiance to another country or government

There is nothing pejorative about these terms, they are simply accurate language. Republicans care about law and the Constitution. The Left cares about political power.

Making someone a dependent on the government is a terrible thing to do to a human being. You give them enough to survive and cope, but not enough to escape dependency. But being dependent, they will vote for those who give them enough stuff to live, lest someone take away that upon which they depend.

“Hispanic” or “Latino” are terms that refer to those who came from Spanish-speaking countries. They do not refer to race. Hispanics and Latinos come in as many races and mixtures of races as the rest of us. They have the advantage of being bilingual, something that a majority of native-born Americans don’t, in spite of language requirements in high school. If they are not white, they get to be double “minorities” which is silly, but identifying people as “minorities” is important to the Left, as is assuming that minorities must be treated differently under the law in order to assure their membership in the majority.

Native-born or natural-born citizens have no advantages in law over the newest citizen, just different history, which is interesting and if your family has been here since before the Revolution you can join a number of ancestry-worshiping societies. People from other countries can join a number of ethnicity-worshiping societies. Sometimes even festivals and good food. Do you have royalty in your background? Big deal. Stalin’s daughter, Khrushchev’s son, and Castro’s daughter have all become American citizens—legally. So much for ancestry.

America is reviled across the world as a bully, as decadent, as warmongering, and as the world’s policeman. Our own president is somehow determined to make us “just one nation among many and nothing special.” Which is apparently why he goes around the world apologizing for America and bowing to the leaders of other countries, most recently, once again, in China.

That is why we have people all over the world, too impatient to wait for legal immigration, or too illegal to get permission, flock to our border and pay exorbitant amounts to get spirited across. Why those who have come to study in America overstay their visas and disappear into society. And why female visitors from Asian countries disguise their pregnancies in order to give birth to a child in America and give them American citizenship, as a birthright gift.
