Obama Practices Gangster Government— Chicago Style! by The Elephant's Child

Last week, the House joint Oversight and Small Business Committee held a hearing on a proposed Presidential Executive Order which would mandate the disclosure of their political donations by contractors who wanted to do business with the government.

If a company wants a federal government contract, from now on it will first have to disclose if the company or its executives gave more than $5,000 in political donations.
The order would implement parts of last year’s Disclose Act, which failed to pass Congress but was a favorite of Democrats because it would deter political contributions by business after last year’s Citizens Unitedv. FEC Supreme Court decision.

As the Wall Street Journal said: “Disclosure may sound nice, but the real point is to put companies on notice that their political contributions will have, well, consequences.  When the Disclose Act was before Congress, New York Democrat and co-sponsor Chuck Schumer made clear the bill was designed to “embarrass companies” our or exercising the rights recognized in Citizens United. “The deterrent effect should not be underestimated,”he said.

The point of this is to discourage political speech by certain speakers. Having failed  in Congress to control free speech, and failed before the Supreme Court, they are trying to get their way by Executive Order.  If you donate to a Republican cause, don’t even try to get a federal contract. Chicago style government.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, called the order the “crassest” political move he’s ever seen. “This is almost gangster politics, to shut down people who oppose them…I assure that this is going to create problems for them in many ways—seen and unseen—if they go forward.”

Senator Collins (R-ME) said “It has taken decades to create a federal contracting system based on “best prices, best value, best quality,” and the effect of the Obama order is to again have “politics play a role in determining who gets contracts.”

The Heritage Foundation’s Hans von Spakovsky put it this way: “It is really amazing— they lost in the Supreme Court, they lost in Congress, they lost at the FEC, so now the president is just going to do it by edict.”

Democrats are trying to pass this off as “reform.” This is, by definition, Gangster Government.
