Considering Barack Obama won the election with approximately 52% of the electorate, the news that only 47% of Americans support her confirmation (40% oppose it) does not speak well for his current level of support, let alone his nominee’s. By comparison, Americans supported Samuel Alito’s confirmation by 54% (only 30% opposed it), and supported John Roberts’ confirmation by a whopping 60% (with a mere 26% opposed).

Sure, she’ll probably get confirmed anyway, unless something dramatic happens, but, as Ace notes,  these poll numbers suggest Americans have given Obama and the Democrats just about all the slack they intend to.

UPDATE: Rassmussen has a new poll that shows a plurality of Americans oppose Sotomayor’s confirmation with only 38% supporting her confirmation and 44% opposing it.
