Paper: Saddam valued WMD more than he valued his own life by Emerald City Elephant

Saddam Hussein

In a classic case of “burying the lede” to push a political agenda, the British website, ThisisLondon reports on a supposed transcript of a meeting between president Bush and then Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar published yesterday in the Spanish newspaper, El Pais.

The website blares the headline, “Saddam asked Bush for $1bn to go into exile,” and then spends the greater bulk of the article insinuating that the whole war could have been avoided if President Bush only had paid Saddam off.

It’s not until the 9th paragraph that they print the quote in which we find that President Bush actually said,

“The Egyptians are speaking to Saddam Hussein,” said Mr Bush.

“It seems he’s indicated he would be prepared to go into exile if he’s allowed to take $1billion and all the information he wants about weapons of mass destruction.” [emphasis added]

Which is an entirely different matter altogether.

Not only is it an obviously unacceptable offer, but rather than proving how supposedly unnecessary the war was, if anything, it proves the exact opposite by showing how completely obsessed with WMD Saddam Hussein was. So obsessed that he was only willing to negotiate his own freedom if he were able to take, “all the information he wants about weapons of mass destruction,” with him.

At the very least that means that, even in exile, Saddam wanted to keep secret what his WMD capabilities were and were not, and more likely, all the information necessary to produce WMD.

That is not an agreement any responsible leader could accept. That is a man obsessed with retaining WMD knowledge and capability, and that is not a man any responsible leader could leave in power.

But the left have been supplied with their talking point. The web is already bursting with new claims that, “we didn’t have to go to war!” The facts are of absolutely no concern to them.
