Matthew 28:1-10

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”

So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

We really don’t know what to do with bad answers to unasked questions. The picture at the top of this column suggests that we do. If we are going to portray angels waiting outside the tomb, we don’t have the slightest idea of what angels actually look like. Are there real angels? Do they look like ordinary people, but with halos? That seems unlikely, but what we seem to have settled on.

You will notice that our ides of angels seems to look like ordinary human beings, but with some suggestion of holiness, However who has suggested that holiness is represented correctly by haloes? Whenever angels are portrayed they are represented with haloes and wings, but where does that come from? Dunno! Why do we assume that angels have wings? Lots of unanswered questions that we don’t seem to fave answers for.

You will notice that existing portrayals of angels suggest that they are merely ordinary human beings, mostly with halos, and with a variety of wings. Interesting that they try to make them more accessible by making them look just like us, but with wings!

Lots and lots of variety in the wings part. Not just in the size and shape of the wings, but in how they are attache to the body, but clearly in the function of the wings. They may be attached to the body, but seldom any indication of their function. Do you fly around with them, flapping? Some of the illustrations seem to suggest that, but without much in the illustrations suggesting function, nor even actual movement. Few illustrations get the body with the wings even off the ground.

We seem to like the idea of flying people, but clueless as to how that could happen, and even more how and where you get the body up in the air, or what you do with it once you do.
