Unsettled Times. How Do We Deal With Them? by The Elephant's Child

What an oddly unsettled time this is. Protests all over the place, the latest being truckers protesting against mandates. One assumed in the first place that they were protesting governmental orders to get vaccinated, but it turns out that wasn’t it at all. They mostly are fully vaccinated, which traveling from place to place seems wise. Turns out that they expect a government to set basic traffic rules, and then leave them alone to follow the rules. They do not want a bossy government telling them what to do, and I can’t blame them. Governments are not instituted among men to tell them what to do, just to set some basic rules for everybody. Governments sometimes get confused about the limits of what is acceptable, and go way too far, which currently seems to be the case.

Politics can be an inviting game, profitable, and the grasp for ever more power is enticing. I imagine that it is easy to assume that when you get elected to a position, you are appointed to do all the nice things that impelled you to seek public office in the first place. If hundreds or thousands of people seem to support you that’s a powerful incentive. We have elections so that we can narrow down the number of people trying to give us directions to a very few, but that does not necessarily mean that we have given them the power to reorient our lives, or even to change them at all. Politicians need to feel their way to what is needed, acceptable and possible.

I am happy to welcome new immigrants who wish to become American citizens and work to protect and preserve our country. I expect them to apply and wait their turn in the proper legal way. Our current president seems to want to just throw open the gates and invite Central America in. That, I do not understand, nor accept.

I am dubious about current industries needing to import workers rather than enlisting the graduates of our colleges and universities who are trying hard to produce very qualified workers for American business. There is clearly a salary question involved, and our university grads may expect more than illegals will.

Our Border Patrol is working at a hard and dangerous job, trying to protect the border from infiltration by those not entitled to enter, and to keep illegal drugs out of the country. They deserve lots of encouragement and gratitude for their hard and dangerous jobs. We have way too many deaths from illicit drugs, and from violent people who manage to get across the border.

Murder numbers are currently unacceptably high. When there seem to be a lot of murders, does it seem more acceptable to do one? To get rid of that annoying wife or husband? Or are most murders committed as part of a robbery or other crime? Never felt impelled to kill anyone. though I have eliminated one lynx, 3 or 4 rattlesnakes, and large numbers of woodrats. Have you ever been tempted to murder someone?
