Have You Ever Had Your Mail Stolen? by The Elephant's Child

We have problems in my neighborhood with stolen mail. I do not receive any funds by mail, only bills. But if I do not receive a bill, it’s apt not to get paid, since I do not automatically know what is owed. No help from Police Department or Post Office, whose only response was advising me to buy a locking mailbox. Finally gave up and bought one ($150.00) and got a son to install it. I find it infuriating that the Post Office essentially feels no responsibility,) However the famous phrase that you probably recall—neither rain nor snow nor sleet will stay… Is NOT a Post Office motto, unfortunately.

HOWEVER: Stealing the mail is a federal offense, and if one is convicted. they go to the State Penitentiary for a significant term. That, however is not part of either general knowledge nor known by potential mailbox thieves. Would be nice to get the word out. But how? Local newspaper headlines? Unlikely. My solution, to save the nation, is to tell three people of the fact in bold type, and ask each of them to tell three people with the same instructions, and if necessary, the reason for the fuss. If people would actually do that, the word would get out.

We read in the press that the idea that one can simply walk into a store with a big bag, fill it up with desired merchandise and walk out without being arrested is spreading and effecting more stores. So, would you help? Is this a silly idea or would it work? What do you think?

ADDENDUM: Wrote to the Mayor about the mailbox problem, and had a nice call from the mayor and another from the police captain in charge of this area. What’s the old saying? “The squeaky wheel does get the grease.’Pays off to squeak to the right people!
