Assumptions? by The Elephant's Child

School shootings are appalling. That someone would choose to attack school kids is so deranged that it’s hard to get your mind around it. Yet, that has happened. So the talk immediately turns to banning guns, stronger regulations about who can buy a gun, and where, and what restrictions there should be. Yet someone who has attacked a school obviously already has a weapon and knows how to use it. Future regulations aren’t going to help much, even if they would work. It’s not the weapon, it’s the shooter.

Most ranchers have guns. They need to put down varmints that are going after their cattle or sheep. Sometimes they have tp put down one of their own animals, because they are sick or injured. If you scroll down, I have enumerated the victims of my weapons. I have a .45 and a ..22, and have used them. Chief victims have been nine rattlesnakes, and innumerable woodrats.

I don’t think one can assume that a school shooter has decided to shoot up a school and then gone out to buy a weapon to commit the deed. Yet that chain of events seems to be what is being pursued with regulation and laws. I think one can probably make a bomb of some kind after a trip to the hardware store, without buying anything illegal. I have not checked out that assumption, as I cannot imagine having to make a bomb in my kitchen. Nor have i added up the ingredients for a successful bomb to see where they could be purchased.

Adds up to a good example of how ineffective laws are dreamed up and put into effect to accomplish nothing of much use. If we knew how to single out those people who at some point would erupt and commit a despicable act, we could have peaceful cities everywhere, and not worry about large or better trained or more effective police forces. But there you go.
