There are horror movies, and there are scary movies. Horror movies terrify with shock, blood and gore while scary movies rely on atmosphere, character and suspense. It’s much more difficult to pull off the latter but they are equally if not more chilling when well done.

The Others is just such a movie.

Nicole Kidman’s husband has not returned from the war and she is left to raise her two children alone in a big, spooky mansion. Kidman is overprotective to begin with — add in that her children have a rare disorder that makes them deathly allergic to light, and she borders on neurotic. But it’s when three servants show up to take the place of Kidman’s deserted help that things begin to get really strange.

Kidman’s outstanding performance pulls you right into the tension, and the movie holds you there as suspense builds and builds.

Let me just put it this way. If you have not seen the Others, see it. It is definitely one of the best ghost stories and easily makes our list of the 20 Best Halloween Movies Ever!

Rated PG-13 for thematic elements and some frightening moments.
