The purpose and use of a mask to protect from the Covid-19 virus is much misunderstood. The mask prevents the wearer’s coughs or sneezes from reaching other people. It is contained within the mask. They do not necessarily protect the wearer from the coughs or sneezes of others. They protect other people from your exhalations, their masks protect you from them. That is my understanding, from what I read at the CDC website, which you can reach at cdc.gov.
Dr. Anthony Fauci has been adamant that everyone should wear a mask, yet a great many lost all confidence in him when he was photographed at a crowded baseball game — without a mask, clearly enjoying the chance to be attending a game. Double check me, please at the CDC website, and at your State’s health department, or wherever you can get the best information.
There is also a lot of misdirection about getting the virus from things such as packages from Amazon, deliveries from the grocery store, the mail? Must one assume that any new object coming into your house is a potential carrier of disease? From what I read, it’s simply unclear.
There was great consternation when President Trump added Dr. Scott Atlas to his team, because he was not an epidemiologist. However, Dr. Atlas is not only a fellow at the Hoover Institution, but has been studying the statistics from every other country on their experiences and successes and failures and has become quite expert in the reality out there.
I am certainly not any kind of expert. I just read a lot. The disease is new, we don’t know much about it for sure, and we are trying to learn at warp speed. Governor Cuomo’s dreadful experience in New York City when he recommended putting elderly patients into senior care homes, in the somewhat reasonable view that they were more skilled at taking care of old folks, ended up as a catastrophe, and New York City became the hot spot for Covid death in the country. Cuomo is still trying to avoid any blame for his mistake.
We don’t know enough about this virus, and are still wandering about in a forest of ideas without any guidance as to what the correct answers are. Try to understand how little we know and how hard it is to find real facts. There are a number of people working at the White House, or on the campaigns who have now tested positive, which means they will get care and treatment, which is good. Information, dependable tested information, is the most needed quantity, and we can do without all the posturing and pronouncements, most especially from Hollywood “celebrities”.
A “celebrity” is someone whose name you might recognize, for one reason or another. For news websites, they are “click-bait” which means simply that you might click on their article if you recognize the name. Hollywood “celebrities” used to spend heavily on press agents to get their names in the papers, because that’s how you got to be a “celebrity”. Now they just try to say something fairly outrageous, which the news sites will pick up, and first thing you know they have some name recognition and they are a real “celebrity” and people will click on their names, and they become a more “important” celebrity. Do not encourage this! We already have way too much of it.
Study up. Recognize how little our experts know, and protect yourselves by being as informed as you can. That will result in saved lives, maybe even your own.
